I can’t remember the last time I teared up during a song, but “I fight this battle all alone, no one to cry to, no place to call home” did it. It made me think of Layne’s last few years.
I've listened to this song so many times after my dad passed away. He didn't want to live anymore, but I don't blame him - he was in so much pain in his last year. This song and Dallas Green's soothing voice has comforted me over and over again. "I Fight this battle all alone" etc. gives an idea of the despair Layne had. Not to mention the lyrics in Dirt. It's so dark. His bandmembers tried to help but I guess the drugs really had a big grip on him. Poor guy.
Mark was the only one really allowed near him around him for the last years, and he said he just hoped that some big emergency would put Layne in the hospital and give him some time to kick, but it never came. He was literally the closest person and friend to the two biggest rockstars dying in the 1990's.
My Dad passed from non-hodgekins lymphoma on 10/6/2020 and there will forever be a piece of me gone from this earth. I miss him every day. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad you were able to draw comfort from this performance. For me, when something like that happens, I know my old man sent it.
Hope the new city and colour album can help you heal brother. Dallas started writing it to help deal with the passing of his good friend who passed away. The love still held me near
My brother is dead, my mother too. Those that love you didn't get lost for nothing. This song is beautiful and I listen to it often. Persist, and defy.

I’ve been going through letting go of a relationship that lasted 4 years, and she used to listen to city and Colour with me a lot. Dallas’s voice just rends open my heart
Wow, never heard of this guy and this is my favorite song of all time. He did a fantastic job. Its hard to compete with the original but he put his own touch on it and its beautiful.
If you enjoy this style from him, check out "nowhere, Texas" or "coming home". The second one is very close to this sound in this version. You'll love it!
And if you guys are down with some heavier stuff, check out his original band Alexisonfire! Probably the greatest post-hardcore bands of the early 00's. What a career Dallas Green has had.

I love that Dallas pays tribute to Layne and Alice in Chains. This song deserves to be heard by a wider audience. It's one of the most emotionally charged songs ever written in any genre.

I think it is so fucking hard to put into words how hearing Dallas sing so many songs (his or cover) makes me feel. Haunts me, touches my soul, makes me weep, makes me think about things I never thought of before, his singing actually makes me want to be a better human being! I can't get enough of his voice and the feelings that it makes me feel. His music is such a gift and I don't know if I'm worthy but I sure will try to be! ❤
Can’t believe I am just now coming across this cover in 2018. One of my favorite songs covered by one of my favorite artists. Amazing job and perfect voice for the song!
Good idea. The fact that the song was covered by an accoustic expert like Dallas Green means that its originality and subtlety will be preserved, plus you will get the vintage City n Color touch to it.
Such a different direction than the grunge norm this song is typically covered with, yet it still fully conveys the exact emotion as Layne's original vocals, dare I say just as well as the original. Incredible work! Wasn't sure it was for me from the get go, yet here I am writing this thoughtful comment! Keep up with the incredible content!
Most people could overlook that guitar work and just say his vocals were phenomenal...Not me. Being able to sing that well live is one thing. But strumming that guitar with as much feel as he did..that made this cover. The quick play on the chord progression...The way he accents certain notes..And The soft notes in between the chorus and verse. All so well thought out. What a great cover.
People typically don't understand when older AIC fans say that every song is about heroine. Of course, this song is about fame and holding on to one's identity......but it's also about heroine. It bleeds into every aspect of the artist's expression and remains as the layer beneath. Every song has a oily black vein corroding the soul from within and that( in a strange way)makes it even more beautiful.
This was deep as fuck. Totally agree though. Heroin isn't something simple. Its an addiction. And addictions, when strong enough, become part of who you are.
I think all these Layne fans who think this song isn't being done justice need to go listen to City And Colour's first 3 albums and realise Dallas knows exactly what this song is about.
+Intelligent Stimulus...Dallas Green definitely did an outstanding cover of this song and also made it unique.. i personally like this cover better than the original. his voice depicts the heaviness of the lyrics and their meaning, without the angst in his voice. i do like layne and all but....the cliche grunge vocals get on my nerves, after a while. switch it up some time.
Dont want to sound like that guy that says the original is way better but.. listening to a broken man (layne unplugged) sing this song is.. is.. too much... : \ i am a huge fan of Dallas and this sounds great, i appreciate him doing this cover.
I read an interview with him once and he was saying that Grace is one of his all time favourite albums but he's reluctant to cover Jeff because he thinks his voice is not good enough. Can you imagine?
Dallas is the only artist I repetitively listen to all the time every single song is good and this rendition of nutshell is the only song I ever listen to anymore! He is extremely blessed with talent that you just can't find anywhere else!!
city in color, i feel every word when i hear you perform this song. in fact ill never forget where i was, who i was with, and what i was doing the first time I heard you perform this song. thank you isn't enough, but it's all i got
Of course we all miss Layne. Of course no one can sing this song with as much emotion and heart wrenching turmoil as Layne . Its because Layne wrote it. But Dallas is not trying to. He is just playing and singing a beautiful song in his own way. Not a competition but a tribute to Layne and obvious admiration for such a perfect song. I love it. I felt as if Dallas played the song with as much emotion as anyone except for Layne. He is obviously a fan that loved and respected Layne and his otherworldly talent
Needed to hear this tonight. Been struggling to get by for a while and for whatever reason, even though I’ve heard this song many times, including this cover, I need this song now probably more than I ever thought I would
I lost my older brother October 1st to drug overdose. I joined the military about a year and a half prior so I could learn self discipline and would one day be able to return home and live with him. His death rattled me. Nutshell has always been my favorite song, it was the first song I ever played at an open mic and it always made me feel back at home. This version brought me to my knees as many forgotten memories of my brother showed themselves. This version is so gentle and so beautiful. Thank you Dallas, if you ever see this.

I love covers like this. They draw everything that they love from the song without just straight up copying it.
we need a "Dallas in chains" cover album man....you are amazing Mr. green.
He did another cover for a big tribute they were getting, few artists did covers!
What a great cover.
such a beautiful vibration. for 3 minutes and 15 seconds I lost my fear of death. thank you
I've loved. No. Adored..and played this song for over two decades. . . DAMN! Dallas just kills it!
Such a beautiful cover! Just when I think I know all of his songs I stumble across an amazing cover 💕 you'll always be my favourite artist
Wow! Dallas Green covering Nutshell...I think I just pissed a little in my pants. This rendition is awesome.
Me too brotha!!
This is one of the best covers I've ever come across. Mr Green, you are a legend...
I think all these Layne fans who think this song isn't being done justice need to go listen to City And Colour's first 3 albums and realise Dallas knows exactly what this song is about.
Ehhh, slightly, but still no comparison.
Miranda Alexander Say what you will, but Layne's vocal capabilities far exceed anything this hipster could dream of doing.
You already decided you hated it before he even started playing. You took one look at him and made up your mind that he sucks.
obviously this guy has a musical background and knows exactly what he's talking about LMAO @semiintelligent stimulus
One of my favorite Alice in Chain songs done by one of my favorite artists. Beautiful Dallas
i can't breathe
Selah0412 i know right? It builds me up and breaks me down. Breaks my heart and fixes it all at once
Selah0412 that was the best cover ever.
Its ok calm down . . . Think of your favorite city and your favorite color.
Selah0412 Might want to see someone about that
Dont want to sound like that guy that says the original is way better but.. listening to a broken man (layne unplugged) sing this song is.. is.. too much... : \
i am a huge fan of Dallas and this sounds great, i appreciate him doing this cover.
This boy been singing this since he was 14....
Unique and in perfect city in color fashion. Layne and AIC would be proud. Well done man so good
This is so good but you must hear “Live Not Survive” or “Winding Road” by SLT 🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘
God damn it.. He captured the spirit of this song so well
Collin Glover my thoughts exactly!!
Oh man I'm so happy I found this. I'm putting together the Playlist for my brother's funeral and we both loved AiC and AoF. This is perfect. Thank you
Dallas should especially cover "Lover You Shouldve Come Over" by Jeff Buckley!
be still my heart!!!! BEST JEFF BUCKLEY SONG EVER
A thousand times ,yes.
I read an interview with him once and he was saying that Grace is one of his all time favourite albums but he's reluctant to cover Jeff because he thinks his voice is not good enough. Can you imagine?
He did cover that song and it sounds amazing!! Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/vlXJFeXcW0w/v-deo.html
@@jackychinz holy McFuck ITS AMAZING
Dallas is the only artist I repetitively listen to all the time every single song is good and this rendition of nutshell is the only song I ever listen to anymore! He is extremely blessed with talent that you just can't find anywhere else!!
No fucking way, two of my most favorite artists. I had city and colour on shuffle, you wouldn't believe my face when I heard this.
shivers down the spine with cover, well done my brother. You should feel proud indeed!
some people were put on this earth to do certain things. god damnit, that dude was put here to sing.
city in color, i feel every word when i hear you perform this song. in fact ill never forget where i was, who i was with, and what i was doing the first time I heard you perform this song. thank you isn't enough, but it's all i got
This is so good but you must hear “Live Not Survive” or “Winding Road” by SLT 🤘🔥🎸
@@beezybeez5971 looking them up now. Thank you
@@sonoragravettewhitfield1126 🤘🙏
I feel for you. Thank you for your service. Im a recovering addict who's lost dozens if ppl, family to drugs and overdoses. I can relate, so sorry for your loss brother. My prayers are with u 🙏
Honestly whoever felt it necessary to add this intro and outro to this video isn't getting into heaven.b
O melhor cover dessa musica que ja vi até agora, transmite tanta emoção quanto a original, parabéns!
Caio Alves Layne faz melhor.
Não, Layne Staley estava em um tier GOD, incomparável, não coloque Layne Staley e outro vocalista na mesma frase, ele estava em outro plano.
I swear this dude can make any song sound like one of his own
The best voice that ever existed
The best voice
So awesome that Dallas got to open for Alice In Chains. I imagine that must’ve been a mighty feeling for him.
I love this rendition. Actually it was Adema’s cover of “Nutshell” which made me realize what a truly remarkable and universal song it is.
Thanks Alice In Chains and thank you, Dallas for this beautiful cover. 🤘🏽
so i have listened to this 28 times in a row now
I know something else I'd like to do 28 times in a row ;)
You should listen to the original, it's way better and actually has feeling and emotion behind it.
Lucy Fleet I'm on listen 10!!!
I tend to do that on songs I like haha
You should try listening to something good.
The soft touch on the vocals and guitar really made the lyrics come through.
