Kevin Penkin is a GOD of his art form. Made in Abyss is a masterpiece. The original story/manga are incredible and the Anime does it complete justice, given the differences in medium. Kevin Penkin's OST with the incredible world/environment art from an ex-Studio Ghibli protege, with the great animators and VA's made this something special. Showed us again how amazingly beautiful anime can be while exploring really lighthearted humour and dark themes. I love the trash, ecchi, throwaway series as much as the next guy... But this truly is what makes anime an art form. Kevin Penkin is a fairly new composer, but i hope he lends his godly talents to many more anime, video games, movies, etc. in the future. Being a fellow Australian, I'm proud one of us is making such huge waves in his profession, so early in his career.

This series has a grotesque charm to it. It's the contrast between the youthfulness of the characters and the morbidity of the Abyss and its residents. For whatever reason, that contrast gives me chills, and I love it. But the music... the music is the cherry on top that rounds off the experience and makes it a true masterpiece!
listening to this ost after a good few months of not hearing it is an amazing experience. you can easily forget just how intricate the sounds and mixtures of the instruments used are, it's so very great to listen to new again.
yeah - I was obssessed with this at the start of last year and now that its been a few months, coming back to it has reminded me how breathtaking the music is - hahaha was binging a bunch of Yoko Kanno's work recently (zankyou no terror esp OMG its really good too!)

Made in Abyss kinda feels like the original rendition of many fairy tales that have been Disneyfied. These magical, myth-filled worlds bearing so much promise, but always having some dark or twisted ending to bear as a lesson.
"My... My Treasure!" One of the single most painfully sad lines of dialog I have ever heard in an anime... NO Western VA I have ever heard could put that much heart and soul into the Voice Acting in this show... I can hear Nanachi's heart breaking.
Shoooooot, I know that's right! That whole scene with Mitty broke everyone's heart! I ugly cried the first time and it STILL makes me cry. How Nanachi just breaks down after she's gone just crushes your soul! T_T

I came here a few days ago right after watching the anime and straight up bawled listening to the familiar OSTs, so I'm back at it again, man the way foreshadowing was played in this anime, can't believe I missed out on this for years
its not my favorite show of all time but my favorite show in this type of anime which is adventure. the only thing that even comes remotely close is magi and the labyrinth of magic.
This is exactly the kind of ost you can't appreciate fully without having seen the anime It goes really well with the unique and totally caracteristic atmosphere !
I watched and finished Made in Abyss not too long ago, and damn is it beautiful! Made in Abyss is the only anime who can create such a beautiful, mysterious, creepy and sad feeling. The characters, the world, the music, the art, etc. is all just perfect! I could spend literal hours talking about the beauty of Made in Abyss. Not only is Made in Abyss one of the best anime ever made, it is also the only anime that made me cry the most! An absolute masterpiece in my eyes! Technically, if you do a proper overall analysis, you will see that MiA is indeed the best anime ever made. It's not my favorite anime tho. I put MiA on #2, only behind of Steins;Gate. Why, you ask? Are you curious? Bwuhahaha. **pick up the smartphone** Cuz that's my choice. ~EPK.
There was really a great sense of adventure that came with this anime, there really aren't many titles that is able to replicate the thrilling feeling of curiosity. Made in Abyss is definitely a unique gem that people need to watch if they haven't.
38:23 - Truly the best anime ost i've ever heard... this song hits me like a truck every time i listen to it - emotionally. That moment at the end of Ep 13 (14) when it plays... i've shed so many tears. Not only because this masterpiece has ended, but also because this final ending scene was so powerful and emotional... Hope we get a second season soon.
Beautiful and exotic soundtracks. Reminds nostalgic feelings of old games like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Paper Mario and Final Fantasy 5 (SNES). One of the best Adventure Anime seen through the years.
One of the best soundtracks ever composed, and still going strong with the movie and season 2's soundtracks, hopefully Kevin is gonna keep up the insane quality that just keeps getting better and better the further it goes on
My favorites are 03:53 The First Layer (truth, beginning), 35:27 Pathway (lost, tragedy), 20:34 Swings and Roundabouts (anticipation, journey), 24:25 Orth Waltz (hope, resolution, love), 00:01 Made in Abyss (arrival, finalization, completion, ending, new beginning) in that order because it creates a journey unto itself.
never watched this anime but i was just listening to music while doing my final essays for this college semester and the ost has bewitched me I can't stop listening to it feels so nostalgic yet fresh. It even gave me a few ideas for stories and games (I just like to write down ideas so I have them for later if I ever get into writing or game development full time as that is my dream) so much emotion from a show I have not even seen I need to watch it asap once I finish my finals it is time to binge. Edit: on my fourth viewing now how did I sleep on this show for so long? it's my second favorite anime now. Edit 2: one year later on like my 9th viewing I have not rewatch a single show this much since I was a kid and its my favorite show of all time now it even inspired me to make my own comic.

One thing I noticed playing along with the music is that both reg and riko's themes are in the key of g major, and the tempos are only 2 bpm apart (112 bpm for reg vs 114 bpm for riko). I'm not sure if Kevin made the similarities intentionally but it was just something cool I noticed.
sorry but i gotta disagree... i love the anime as well as every soundtrack in it, but there are many animes with great osts , such as naruto, bleach, hxh,violet evergarden, full metal alchemist... but anyways , comparing aint worth it , what matters is enjoying them ;)

The anime itself, had a very childlike/semi-chibi animation that you get caught off guard the lower they get down into the abyss.
I've always felt that contrast is one of the best things about anime. Higurashi is a great example of that as well.

子供が流産して苦しみと切なさ寂しさを感じて辛い中、「冬のBGM」と検索して探したらメイドインアビスのこのBGM集と出会った。
思い出深いのが一番最初の曲。
私の心に寄り添ってくれるかのような…冷たい風がビュービュー吹く雪景色の場面を想像出来る心が凍りつくような感じの切ない曲。でもどこか温かくて懐かしくて聞いていてとても居心地が良くて涙が出ました。
パニック障害になって夜眠れない時もこの曲を聞けば落ち着いて眠れた。
このアニメはどんなアニメなんだろうと、気になって見てみたら凄く世界観も美しくて内容も凄い面白くて深くて衝撃的なものだった。
このBGM集を聞くとあの時の感情を思い出します。
3:53あぁメイドインアビスだなってなる。1番好きです。なんか旅の始まりみたいな感じがして。
