Beautiful analysis! I'm a Sporting fan and sometimes these types of videos are splashed with mistakes when it comes to knowledge about the team; however you got it spot on! Fantastic work, keep it up!
It's not just them wanting. It's the quality because when eg you switch bowen for ganarcho even under ETH you get better results. If you have both that's even better
This just shows that he can organise his team well when facing the big teams. I've never seen Manchester City look so hopeless against a smaller team since they lost 4-0 to Everton, this manager is the real deal.
I wish ETH the best because he introduced us to the modern way of playing so now this will be good for continuity. All we need is the structure to recruit well. In 2 years we could surprise people.
Insightful analysis. It's interesting to notice how small tactical changes can make a big difference. That's what ten Hag struggled with. He wanted to change personnel, Amorim proves it's possible to change approach.
There is a more simple way to explain the result: In the first half Sporting CP defense respected and with reason the MCity strikers and passing ability in the final third so they contained it ! The first goal by MCity was a mistake by Morita who didn’t see Folden coming from behind ! But Sporting was always more dangerous on the counter and Gyokeres missed an easy one on one ! In the second half , Sporting adjusted and knew they could exploit MCity gaps in midfield ! And finally , contrast to Sporting , Man City miss judged the quality of Sporting front 3 , Gyokeres , Trincao and Gonçalves were nightmares going forward with the ball ! Plus the individual quality of controlling and passing by the Sporting players and their pressing at the right times and right areas was better than that of most teams that played against City !
@AJAnalysis I agree with most of it, except for the time and the reason of the changes and the impact it had on the game. So the change to dropping Pedro Goncalves deeper already happened a few times in the first half after like 25 minutes or so. The reason why Amorim made that change is because if city started their attack on the left with Gvardiol and Kovacic, they were able to switch to the right half space that Rico Lewis moved into way too many times, which then allowed him to link up with Savinho. Amorim recognized that his double pivot shifted too aggressively and therefore this space opened up. It got closed down a lot better once the change was made. But the game winning difference was the way sporting attacked the channels in the transition moments. If I am not mistaken, every single goal was scored after finding a player in the half space. First goal, they play it to the right wing back who cuts inside and sends Gyökeres through, who positions himself on Simpson to create a 1v1 and attacks the channel with a deep run. The second goal right after half time goncalves gets into the left half space, bounces the ball out to Araujo, Goncalves moves wide and finds Araujo in the half space, who had continued his run and scored the second goal. Third goal, they play wide again, cut inside and this time they dribble and get the pen. Fourth goal might have just been city not being able to clear the ball. But generally speaking winning the ball back, playing wide and making deep runs into the channel and behind the line is what gave them opportunities on the counter.
Watching the Sporting front 3 last night made me slightly optimistic knowing we have similar profiles in our current squad, Bruno, Hojlund & Amad as a front 3 could operate in a similar way with Bruno dropping into midfield like Goncalves did in this game when necessary, keep all 3 players fit and I believe Amorim could get them to click as a trio 🤞
The future looks good. At least it will be obvious that if he is failing, then it is the players that are intentionally sabotaging him as they always do.
Yeah, that is the big benefit of this. It is essentially showing "This is what I can do. Now, let's see what you can do." The players can't argue that his tactics don't work because he just showed the world that they do
Absolutely spot on mate I said the same thing that if what he is doing doesn't work the players are at fault bcz look at how Sporting play e d for him in that game despite having less of the ball
To be honest, I preferred ten hag system to this The difference is always player execution Goals changes game and under ETH, we rarely scored... If united was playing, we would have been 4 nil down first half in this match Players are our big factor
EtH had the power to veto signings, he accepted all the players we signed this is on EtH mainly cos the players didn't lose faith or heart completely it's evident from the no. of big chances missed that we were trying however the execution of his tactics is questionable and the fact we still don't have a defined way of playing 2.5 yrs since he started the job is telling that EtH was out of touch.
@adampaul6675 I agree totally, my argument is that without goals Tactics is thrash. When i look at how ETH set us up in recent games and how amorim set up in UCL . Eth is better with setup against city but today Sporting took their chances. Man city looked good bit couldn't finish. I just wish Amorim the very best with these attacker of united
Unlike most Utd fans I chose not to watch Sporting's game, I watched the bigger game on the night Madrid VS Milan coz I knew my man AJ will pull through with the analysis 😅
sporting has at least six very good ball carriers that is one of their major strengths united don't have very good ball carriers maybe two or three at best that is a problem the new boss is going to have to fix
😅😅😅😅keep dreaming. Reality will hit hard in England for RA. City lost to Bournemouth the other day. Is Bournemouth manager the next coming of Christ too?
The problem with United is effort not tactics. Players would come out in the second half with no intensity. But yes let's blame ten hag and pretend we understand exactly what's going on
Honestly Ten Hag got results against City. We typically play well on the counter against big teams. Amorim will get us results against the teams we SHOULD beat.
Tbh sporting players mostly dont have the quality to go 1v1 against city players. With a back 3 of deligt, yoro, martinez i think you could leave haaland to deligt and task the other two to step up whenever lewis or bernardo silva are about to get the ball. And as you mentioned if that was to happen, the starting game plan wouldve worked. The reason 5311 worked in second half was gyokeres, city defenders were terrified to push up, and that made the 1v1 situations in midfield and defence of sporting not get disrupted.
this is how mourinho do it during manager man utd and win UEL but his style is defence and we complaint about it because too boring too much defence and depend on counter attack and this happen with amorim style play 27% posession and man city 73% posession
What scares me the most is all these tactical switch here and there will just anger those divas at united whom wont comply to complicated tactics and just before we know it, amorim will be sacked due to bad run of results just like other managers before him😂
City should've been at least 3 goals clear first half. Let's not pretend it was some kind of masterclass. However what Ruben seems to have is the ability to motivate his players during half time. Something eth could not. As untied would usually conceded a goal immediately after half time. Eth is a better tactician than Ruben. But Ruben is a better man manager.
U watch this analysis and still spit rubbish, he won the game through tactics and man management, Eric was never a good tactician. He believed in individual brilliance and moments.
I am from Portugal so that is not true... he plays very effective killing people with direct play.... BUT its not all tactics... the rest is people.... do your players are sold on what you want... that is why we are so good trainers 🤣🤣
One up on a time ET beat Real Madrid one of the best team in the world 4:1 and every one said that what a manager we have get what happen after a while that give me a big question because last night Ruben said that man utd can't play the way sporting play that is what I think Ruben Amorim will be a failure at man utd so what I wish him a good luck
U need to go back and watch the whole video, I think what u said was out of context, he said he can't play defensively as he did at sporting compared to mautd, people believed manutd should be dominating not defending. he need to be better and improve as a coach also.
If the coacher want to succeed in utd he should remove all the player and start a fresh as Pep did to man City, unless otherwise they will let him sacked as the always do.
Beautiful analysis! I'm a Sporting fan and sometimes these types of videos are splashed with mistakes when it comes to knowledge about the team; however you got it spot on! Fantastic work, keep it up!
It’s great that United have a new manager, but if the players don’t want to work hard to incorporate the new system, we will continue to struggle.
How did United win the FA cup.
Compact midfield.
But that only works so far City at full strength would have taken sporting apart.
It's not just them wanting. It's the quality because when eg you switch bowen for ganarcho even under ETH you get better results. If you have both that's even better
They can say goodbye then
i liked how he changed his set up in the second half, hopefully he will do that in Manchester
If I was Amorim, I would give you a job just because of that diagram at 4:13... Great work.
Where can I use that diagram?
This just shows that he can organise his team well when facing the big teams. I've never seen Manchester City look so hopeless against a smaller team since they lost 4-0 to Everton, this manager is the real deal.

please get me Gyokeres, what kind of a striker has a bad day whilst scoring a hattrick.
A world class striker
Hojlund is the same type of player as Gyokeres, Amorim will actually use him properly this time.
