About build quality. Actually I broke 2 pairs of kph30i (plastic is not the best, comfort strap is really nice tho) that's why I bought kph40 and they are definitely more durable (I know that they seem more flimsy) and much more comfortable on ears, only missing part for me is some strap on top because that metal band kinda slips from my head from time to time.
I can back this up! I think the comfort strap was very comfy but my 30s are falling appart and the band is cracking on both side around the adjustement part. I feel like the kph40 will not break as fast.
Seriously it's ridiculous...... I broke like 3 pairs of KPH30's already.... And as we speak. The headband just cracked a few minutes ago on my last pair available as I was taking them off my head.... I never had this issue when I used to own a set of portapros since the headband was metal. What did end up breaking on the protapros was the wires... The Kph30's may be cheap. But got damn having to buy new ones every few months racks up the price. And I'm too lazy to ship them to some Koss repair center and all that hassle. it's more difficult where I'm currently living.. Hopefully I'll be able to find a pair of Kph40's and not only maybe be more durable but also sound better, as well as a portapro utilities as a durable backup headphone.. Also I just discovered this new line-up from koss only yesterday, it escaped my radar. So this is pretty exciting... But come on.. Lol why are they out of stock for so long apparently.
@@Faine212 I must not be very hard on mine. I've had them for a couple of years now and they are still ok. Although, they mainly stay in the arm storage of one of my home theater chairs. I do use them occasionally.

@@TheDonCucaracho I agree! I think the current state of the music industry is such that we are conditioned to listen to it in the background or just for a short period of time. Back in the day, albums were released to be listened to entirely in one sitting. Tracks are picked out to tell or story or, at the very least, work well with one another. I guess that it was I enjoy so much about vinyl. You just don't see many albums produced that way anymore. They are all designed to have radio-friendly singles. This likely makes me sound old, but I miss the old way albums were produced.. Hope you have a happy new year!
the kph30i headband is prone to snapping.. happened to me twice and I look after my stuff! from what I've read the clears are more sturdy. I've had the rhythm beige and the greys snap. as for the 40's, the plastic slider on that is prone to snapping, happened to me within a few weeks and I've seen others complain of the same thing. Luckily it's an easy fix, some nylon string wrapped neatly looks awesome and lets it slide silently, very sturdy too!
I'll tell you what....I have the Hifiman Ananda's. They are no doubt the better headphone but i find myself reaching for my Kph30i's with the Grado pads just as often. The enjoyment i get out of them is almost on par or is on par. Just a phenomenal bargain!
Craig …Is your 30i clear version ?. With Grado mod, I find that we have to increase the volume a lot. Also I tried the Grado mod with both clear and non clear versions and the clear version sounded too bright. Btw do you remove the stock pads when you add the Grado pads ?
@@itellsri No it is the tan version. I totally GENTLY ripped off the original pads. Not an issue if done with reasonable care. Everyone's ears are different. I purchased these about 2 years ago and i find them perfect and certainly not any brighter than the Ananda's. With the exposed driver and the pads they are approximately equal brightness. The Ananda may even be a tad brighter. They do seem to need a few db of a bump but not anywhere near an issue for me at all.
If you buy KPH40 from Koss, you can add Lightning or Usb-c cable as Bundle at half price..40 HP +20 cable=60... add 15% off if new consumer and first purchase.. 60-9=51
I feel like they should be the same price, or even cheaper unless i'm missing something. The plastic band on my kph30i broke, though. Another good one like this was the Sennheiser PX 100, but unfortunately they don't make those anymore.

But they actually do sound better than lesser expensive sennheisers...... some of the worst headphones I have ever personally heard were the HD560 and the Sennheiser Momentums
@@TheFrugalAudiophile they're bad. I'd even say sennheisers don't sound good until the hd600, I have no clue how anyone bears anything less. That said the momentums were wretched. Just a huge amount of mid-bass that bled into the mids, from memory
Maybe he hasn't used them for long. The 30s seem okay at a glance but with heavy uses (as in daily) they will crack at the side adjustment part at some point for whatever reason. So the 40s will last longer assuming the metal is good. (Which is why I'm getting them next. I've gone through 3 30is so far)

Yes, I really missed the comfort strap! That is basically why I kept the 30i's and sold the 40's!

Just got both for my iPod 5th gen with Wolfson DAC. Can’t decide really both sound great. The KPH40 seems a little more bassy but just barely.
I use the KSC 75 ear clips instead of headband on my KPH40. Adjust them, then bliss. 👍🏻
