There’s just something comforting about Japanese curry that is so distinct from other curries. It’s the quintessential “bundle up with a blanket” kind of food. 🍛 Edit: Guys, does it really matter whether it’s considered the best curry or not? Or for that matter whether any curry is the best? 😩 Let’s all just agree curry in general is good. lol

I had katsu curry for the first time today at a local Japanese place. It was empty inside but the decor was amazing, it was hello kitty themed. For $19.90 CAD I got a massive fried cutlet and a tiny to-go cup of curry. It was good hangover food but the portion was just so massive. The vegetables were steamed and seasoned so well, the cutlet was crunchy and I have to emphasize how fucking giant that thing was. Had it for breakfast and ate the rest at dinner :) I wouldn’t have ordered it if it wasn’t for these videos, thank you for inspiring me to try a new food
Alrighty everyone, here's the recipe for Cocos. Step 1. The Cocos curry spice mix is arguably the most important portion of the whole recipe so follow it carefully. In a food processor combine the following and blend to a fine consistency. 8 Tbsp Cumin 4 Tbsp Coriander 4 Tbsp Cardamom 3 Tbsp Turmeric 2 Tsp Fenugreek (Yellow mustard seed as an alternative.) 2 Tsp Nutmeg 2 Tsp Cinnamon 2 Tsp Allspice 1 Tsp Cloves Once you have your spice mixture combined, filter it through a fine mesh sieve into a container for storage. You can keep the curry spice for a couple months before the flavor begins to degrade. Step 2. The next step will be to combine 1/2 cup of the Cocos curry spice mixture in a large mixing bowl with 3/4 of a cup of all purpose flour, and 3/4 cup of high quality butter or Ghee (I prefer Kerry gold). Once thoroughly combined place in the fridge while you move on to step 3. Step 3. Ingredients needed: 1/3 Lb. of beef or pork with decent fat content 1 Medium white or yellow onion 1/2 of a large carrot 4 cups of chicken bone broth 2 cups of water 1/2 Cup of ketchup 3 Tbsp of Dark soy sauce 3 Tbsp of Worcester sauce 1/4 Tsp of instant coffee Cayenne pepper Vegetable oil Dice your carrot into roughly 1/2 inch pieces. Remove the skin and thinly slice the medium onion. Reserve your vegetables for later.. Dice 1/3 Lb of your preferred meat into 1/2 inch cubes and season with salt and pepper. Cook with 1 Tbsp of vegetable oil in a nonstick pan at medium heat until it start to get a light browning on the outside. Remove from heat and place the meat in a 5.5 Qt or larger nonstick pot. Add an additional 2 Tbsp of veg. oil to the pan in which the pan was cooked. Add your vegetables to the pan and cook while constantly stirring at low to medium heat until the onions become fully translucent. Once complete, remove from the heat and add to the pot with the meat from earlier. Remove the curry butter mixture from your refrigerator and using a heavy spoon scrape the contents from the mixing bowl into the cooking pot with the meat and veggies. Next, add to the pot 2 cups of chicken bone broth and 2 cups of water and bring to a medium heat stirring fairly often until the mixture becomes homogenous. Once it begins to simmer add in the following; 1/2 Cup of ketchup 3 Tbsp of soy sauce 3 Tbsp of Worcester 1/4 Tsp of instant coffee mixed into a half cup of hot water (No this is not a joke) Stir until all of the ingredients combine. Starting with 1 Tsp, add cayenne pepper to reach your desired spice level (I recommend 1/2 Tsp increments and wait 15 minutes before tasting and adding more.) If your curry becomes too thick feel free to add additional water to thin out the consistency. Reduce to a medium low heat and cook until you are satisfied. Serve over rice with your desired toppings. That's pretty much it, if your order in Japan included cheese, I recommend adding pre shredded mozzarella in the bowl before you ladle the curry on top as you will get the desired effect. Joshua Weissman has a great video on how to make the perfect katsu cutlet that you can enjoy with your curry. Good luck everyone!
Coco's is SO GOOD. It was my favorite place to go after a night of drinking, one of the few places open late in Japan. The cheese croquette was slammin, level 10 spice. I miss it so much.
Coco curryhouse on a sweltering day is a bold move, my friend. 😂 The curry flavored sweat dripping down your face is always a nice dessert to enjoy later in the day 🥰
Man i discovered CoCo about half way through my JP trip last year. Would go there maybe 12 times in the 15 days we had left. Was such a great comfort meal when we just needed something quick
It’s probably my favorite place too. The fact that you can customize so much of the curry from the amount of rice you get (in specific gram increments) to the spiciness (10 levels worth, though I usually settle on 4 or 5). All the extra toppings you can add and all the allergy information on a check list. And most locations (all the ones I’ve been to) have menus in English too, if you need.
“Bar counter all by my lonesome” is 💯 my vibe all day everyday.. 8 month postpartum mummy here! 👋🏻 Your content is literally the most relaxing thing ever idky 😅
I get the low allergen curry because I'm gluten free. (It's also dairy and egg free, it doesn't have any of the top 7 allergens in Japan.) They bring it out still in the packets so you know there isn't any cross contamination. But its kind of bland without a topping so I recommend checking their allergen list to see which ones you can eat.
I used to eat coco curry all the time when I lived in Japan. I was so excited to see that they opened one in Texas! I will often drive the 3-4 hours to get it
Japanese curry is so good! It's right up there with Indian and Thai, and each has its own distinctive flavor. The Asian market near me (in Canada) sells the Japanese curry cubes...so good.
Coco is a fantastic curry chain! Tried it on my first visit to Japan last year, and managed to find one in Vietnam this year. Apparently, they have locations both in the UK and the US - both in Hawaii, and on 'the mainland'. Might be my favourite chain restaurant that I've been to, honestly. Delicious, comforting food! Sadly I'd have to travel abroad to find a location, but it's definitely a chain I'm going to look for on future travels.
I can never quite get enough. Not the best, but good comfort food curry, and I love the spiciness levels. Did level 15 last summer which was new at the time; now they apparently have a level 20 which I'll have to re-acclimate and work up to next time I visit.
