    I got a number of requests for this one. IMHO it doesn't get much better than this. A great band (the best!), a great riff, cool chords a super-melodic solo with a truly awesome note sitting in it. I go through all of it ... riffs, chords, fills and solo. So the words are nonsensical. I'll let them slide on that. I still dig a pony!!!

    A very enjoyable tutorial.
    Even throwaway tunes by the Beatles are well worth studying and rewarding to practise.
    Indeed, they can even pick a discarded tune out of their wastepaper basket ("Now And Then") and turn it into an international smash hit fifty years later!
    There are lots of gems in this one, not least George's superb solo and his delicious little fills throughout the track.

      +imunchienandalusia Yeah, me too. My cousin always told me it was a "filler" song, but I've always loved the feel. In one sense this is a totally ordinary rock song, but it's constructed in a unique way with multiple parts. And you're right, it's a very cool performance on that song too. Thanks for listening!!

    Great lesson. When you break it down this way, it really makes one appreciate the genius of the Beatles. And to think that they were playing on a cold rooftop, angry with each other, about to break up, and on a song that Lennon claimed was a piece of crap. It hurts to think all the great music they could have created if they had just hung on another couple of years.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 років тому +1

      Yes, couldn't agree more about The Beatles. There's a reason they were at the top for so long and their music still stands up. Even a "piece of crap" (as Lennon put it) was golden for nearly anyone else. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Hi Mark, I absolutely love this arrangement you've done, can't wait to learn it, it sounds great, love the false start lol, many thanks for doing this lesson, really helps people like me, eager to learn the Beatles tunes with not enough musical knowledge to work out what they are doing lol. Cheers.

      @lastcondorman 9 років тому +1

      Lol, cheers Mark, yea was another reason why I loved your lesson, such attention to detail for a Beatle nut like me lol. Where to start, there are so many I'd love to be able to play, one I have been listening to lately and have always loved is 'some other guy' on the live at the BBC album that has the lead solo on it, think as it was the only one that they have footage of of the Beatles playing live at the Cavern where it all started before they went on to bring out all the other classic songs we know and love and it's a real rocker, it's always been one of my favorites, so I would love to be able to learn that if you had the time, many thanks for your kind offer and for replying to my comment.
      All the best

    I'm having a hard time bending strings without making noise on the ones above them. On the way up, they might spring over my nail, or on the way down, they will twang especially they string directly above the one I'm bending. Do you have any tips for this? Thank you for the video, it's awesome.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  7 років тому

      Thanks Michael. I appreciate the kind comment! I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding the issue you're having, so if I've misunderstood, please correct me! My understanding is that when, say, you're bending the 3rd string, your finger slides under the 4th, 5th and maybe 6th and when releasing the 4th might right out afterward.
      I can't say I've had this problem - at least not for a while. First, make sure your guitar is set up properly. Take it to a pro if you haven't done this yourself before. If the action is very high it will be easier to slide your finger underneath. I play fairly lightly but bend quite a bit, so I set my action at a medium height and don't usually have the problem of sliding underneath the strings. Second, for the ringing out problem you can try muting the lower (4th, 5th, 6th strings in the case of bending the 3rd) strings. This is tricky though, because you don't want to mute the string you're bending! So maybe just mute as you release the bend, because that's the key moment you don't want to have the adjacent strings ring out.

    • @michaelmcgill8104
      @michaelmcgill8104 7 років тому

      yeah it's hard to explain. I guess I'm not sure which is proper bending technique. I'm guessing it's improper to slide my fingernail under the string I'm bending towards. So for example, if I'm bending the B string up at the 12th fret with my middle finger, if I angle my fingernail so that the tip is too shallow and it slides under the G string, that would be improper right? Or does it matter as long as it sounds good? It's usually not a problem going up but when going back down as the G string rolls off the edge of my middle finger's fingernail it can twang. So yeah, bad technique.
      Other times when I don't choose to do it that way, and the angle of my fingernail is higher (in relation to the fretboard), while the angle of my knuckles is lower, the tip of the skin of my finger runs into the G string (since it's impossible to not touch the G string while bending the B towards it), I get some skin stuck in between the G and B strings but as the tension increases, the skin gets pushed out and the G string will twang.
      That's ok if you can't understand my explanation, I should probably just show someone anyways.

      It's a 2008 Gibson Melody Maker. Very underrated in my opinion - and it's a bargain as far as Gibsons go. I've owned lots of guitars (too many!) and it's one of my top 3 or 4. Great neck on it. Great "growl" on the pickup. And I love the "minimalist" approach (one pickup, volume and tone ... that's it). You can't get every sound on it, but for Beatles, Stones, The Who or just that early 70's sound it's darn near perfect. And it's great for country too!
      Thanks for the listen!

    You've indicated at the 3 minute mark that you're hitting a couple of open strings and then refer to the 4th and 3rd strings as the open D and the open E; we all know the 3rd string is the G but I did find it confusing and wondering what kind of tuning you might have had on your guitar.

    best guitar sound of the many 'dig a pony' vids around here. But im an old man who likes guitars to sound like vibrating wires, magnets and speakr cones and not the emulsified output of varied tone-conditioners (you want to sound "professional" dont you?) ...oops-about to go into a rant there.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  7 років тому

      Wm Perry Thanks! And I agree with you on the sound. Somehow the richness of those recordings from that era is lost today. People play and listen to music, not robots. Did you like the false start? Hoped that would get a chuckle or two.

    • @wmperry2790
      @wmperry2790 7 років тому +1

      yeah, when i think "how should an electric guitar sound?" the fist thing comes to mind is Maxwell street in chicago on sundays=shit PA's made from cb radio rigs and amps made from car stereos played by actual blues guys- guys that were half drunk by 9am and had never PAID for a haircut in their life.
      + yeah that Al green pleading falsetto is too much fun. I'd forgotten how good the guitar isparticularily the solo parts you point out--they do so much mucical work-shoviing the chords and intervals into more unusual shapes (that prolly makes no sense, but it feels as if the lead notes are actually an alternate chord progression.
      And though i didn't remember it i assumed the false start-sniff,sniff, was a quote from the original-it was right?
