Lets take a trip back and explore this sporty yet thrifty car that helped Toyota establish

Awesome cars. Up through the 22RE they were known for super reliability, longevity, and excellent fuel economy. They were very popular because of that. Their earlier cars had something of a quirky-to-us Japanese styling taste about them, but these scored a bullseye on equaling or bettering American car styling and feel, and were far better cars than what we built back then too. The go-fast versions were also fun to drive like a sports car, but were more comfortable with more amenities. IMHO these were where Toyota reached full maturity in car manufacturing, and I still see the occasional 2nd Gen Celica on the road even now though those are clearly at the end of their lifespan. I don't see any of the other Japanese cars of those years on the road anymore, which speaks volumes of how good these cars were. I wasn't aware of the coach-built Celica convertibles but the price explains that, as the area I live in was relatively poor economically through those years even though our climate is great for open-top cars. I do remember some of the later engines having reliability issues which hurt Toyata's image and gave Honda a 'free step up' on the market which allowed them to rise to the top beside Toyata faster. Just darn good cars these were and cheap to own and keep; too bad they don't make 'em like this anymore.
They were solid cars I agree 100%. If I had a guess why you still may see one today versus a better selling Corolla then......I'd wager pride of ownership. The Corolla was more of a appliance and used as such. They were well built too as the rest of Toyota lineup. Rust ultimately killed off alot of 70s cars. I loved my Datsun Z's, but it was frustrating that I spent some money making one rust free, and noticed some small bubbling popping up again just a few years after.
@@autochatter Rust does kill. It's humid here in the summers and winters are mostly somewhat rainy; little snow or ice. But over 20- 25 years ago our roads weren't salted or brined for snow and ice, and cars didn't rust too badly (except the exceptions like Datsuns, Fiats, and the cheap GM models). Damn shame about the "Z" cars which were awesome till the rust set in. Rustproofing (factory and aftermarket) is one thing where modern cars are much superior, but then again they tend to be off the road in 20 years or so which might have something to do with that perception. Again there are exceptions with some pickups having frames replaced etc. I know a guy who dirt-tracked an old Celica for a bit. The link which kept the rear-end centered tore out the welds from the body, and re-welding didn't do much better. Rules for his class prohibited all chassis alterations so he couldn't reinforce the spot and before long there just wasn't anything left to weld to. Road cars never saw that kind of stress and AFAIK never had that failure. It was sad because he was by far the fastest car out there. So no car is perfect, but these came close.
@P_RO_ we have a dirt track in my home town too. There was alot of 4 cylinder Pintos, but always seemed to be the one guy with a Celica or 200sx that did well LOL.

I had a 1980 Celica GT USGP Edition in blue. It was my first car and it was cheap (which it had to be since I wasn't born into wealth). Being 18 years old, I wrecked it after just a few months of ownership. I was devastated. I still want one.
I'm sure that was sad. In High School, a buddy of mine had a 78 Fiat 128 4 Dr sedan..it was a turd lol...his dad found him a beautiful 82 Datsun SE king cab truck.it was 5 speed and loaded up..He wrecked it a week later and was driving that Fiat again :( My 84 Celica I had for years never hit a thing....Untill I sold it to a former roommate and he rolled and totaled it.every bit of glass was knocked out EXCEPT the windshield that didn't have a crack!
Oh man I remember my dad's cousin have a 76 Celica GT notchback in black. Still have it today

Toyota is known for reliability for sure. A friend of mine bought a 95 Corolla new and drove it for 20 years putting 266,000 miles on it. Except for routine maintenance the only thing he replaced was the muffler and the EGR valve. That car went all over the 🇺🇸

My very first car was a black on black Toyota Celica GT lift back. Five speed and air conditioning. I absolutely love that car. That motor never gave me an ounce of trouble. I still think about that car to this day Burien I let my mom drive it one afternoon and she totaled it. I still haven't forgiven her
I loved my Celica too. Ex roommate totaled my 84 GT a couple of months after I sold it to him. Wasn't fast, but it was fun and just felt well screwed together.
I had a 74 Celica GT. Chocolate metallic. Stunning. Sadly, I was young, and I wrecked it.
I'm not a fan of brown cars, but that color kinda worked on Celicas! I loved my 84 and didn't wreck it. Sold it to a friend when I bought a Rx7.....and he wrecked my old Celica a few months later 😞
Grandpa was a wise man giving sage advice. Toyota and Honda. They never negotiated but their resale value was off the charts
Yeah..He had a AMC Hornet before the Celica and never went back!

Better then the Starion and Subaru XT. Owned an 87 Celina ST. Big change to fwd and the round shape. Great Channel glad I found. Along with Motor Trend retro my favorites. John Davis is the man
@marshalmagooo3899 thank you! Yeah the seats were awesome! They had the pump up lumbar support bulb like you were checking your blood pressure! By all means binge away. I put out a new one each week. By this weekend I'll have Opel in America out and the following will be the rest of the Celicas!
@@marshalmagooo3899My 85 Supra hands down had the best factory seats out of any car that I've owned, and I'm on car #22 and #23 currently 😂
I always thought that ‘82 Celica was quirky and undeniably JDM derived. When I was a kid, those odd headlamps reminded me of the ‘87 Ford Tempo. Great chatter, looking forward to part 2.

Thanks Rob! It's coming! (After a slight detour about Opel in the U.S.) My wife had a Tempo when we started dating. It was a 88 though so had the flush headlights. I personally think the front headlights on 82 and 83 Celicas kinda ugly. I much preferred the 84 and 85 look!

Love the early rwd Celicas. I have a bright red '85 GTS, and it was identical to the ones in the ads shown, until I put a period correct Kaminari aero kit on it. Now it's in the process of getting a Lexus 1UZ 4 liter v8 put in it
Oh that's cool! I'm gonna guess you have seen Sarah N Tuned...She's doing a V8 swap in a 70s Celica. Guy at work has a 1UZ in a classic 40s or early 50s pickup..Ford or Chevy.

@jordancivic96 When I had my 84 GT, I tried finding the upper hatch spoiler everywhere for mine ( because I couldn't afford what Toyota wanted for a new one)

My parents bought a '71 Carina new and it was such a lemon they never bought Toyotas again for decades and bought Fords instead. Would you believe it?
Actually I would. Toyota had alot of quality problems in the 60s. The first cars they brought over were not suited for U..S. highways at all.
