Mustang and Camaro Mini Tub Install Tips at V8 Speed and Resto Shop
A great way to fit a larger rear tire on a pro-touring, drag race, or restomod Mustang, Camaro, or other Muscle Car is to perform a mini tub install. Mini tubs are larger rear wheel houses that allow for wider rear tires which provide more traction when you’ve added more power to the engine. We install lots of mini tubs at the V8 Speed & Resto Shop, and we share some mini tub install tips in this video.
One way to widen the rear wheel tub is to slice it down the middle, narrow the trunk floor, move the inner tub inboard, and weld in a steel strip to close the gap in the wheel houses. Today, pre-made mini tubs are available from companies like Detroit Speed for the following cars:
1967 to 1969 Chevrolet Camaro
1967 to 1969 Pontiac Firebird
1970 to 1981 Chevrolet Camaro
1970 to 1981 Pontiac Firebird
1979 to 1993 Ford Mustang
1979 to 1986 Mercury Capri
1964.5 to 1970 Ford Mustang
1962 to 1967 Chevy II
1968 to 1974 Chevy Nova

Drilling, cutting, trimming, and welding skills and tools are required to install mini tubs, along with a complete disassembly of the interior and trunk items. Rear leaf springs need to be moved inboard to accommodate wider tires, or a 4-link suspension system can be installed.

Awesome video
@@riggedandjimmiedgarage7268 Thank you!
Nicely done !
My stock 69 bucket that sometimes starts is looking for a sponsor 🏁
I think Kevin always does a terrific job explaining.
Thanks Peter! It's easy to chat about topics you know and enjoy!
The level of difficulty went up exponentially with the car already being complete. Excellent workmanship! Thank you, stay safe 👍
Thank you! 👍 We appreciate the kind words!
Nothing like great workmanship...keep it up Kevin & crew
Thank you Nigel!
I always enjoy your videos. Thanks
Glad you like them! Thanks!
Done several mini tubs as a fabricator. The deep tub kits out now for 1st gen f-bodys seem to be on a tread . We have fat inners, narrowed frame rails and a trunk pan that matches. AMD and Dynacorn needs to fatten the asses for Challengers and Mustangs,
I can't imagine the cost. This is top notch stuff.
Very interesting video! Great job.
Thank you!
Had no idea so much additional modifications were required when tubbing
There are lots of elements, for sure!
Very informative video! Great clean work! What would be the new overall width of the rear end?
Thanks! You can use a stock width rear axle housing and fill the wheel wells with a wider wheel and correct backspacing.
@@V8TV hmm didn’t think about it like that. Is there an advantage to one over the other? I can see the biggest is aesthetics on a deep dish rim but performance wise?
@@shaunsmith9184 The modification can be done without narrowing the rear end, which is a process many do not have access to. The goal is to get the largest tire as possible for best traction, and wheels can be off-the-shelf or custom made if need be. The aesthetics are really secondary in our view.
great video! @ the 7.25 mark in the video, what size wheel and tire is that ? i like the ratio and look. thanks !
I can’t imagine butchering up a completed car just for some rubber. The street racing days ended in the 70’s. I lived it and too bad others didn’t.
What offset for larger rear wheels & tires fit a 69 Camaro do you use
I rather go wide body instead theres so many things you have to modify to install minitub
There is probably more to do on a widebody, especially when considering paint work. But widebodies are sooo cool!
