The #1 Reason Why You Should NOT Buy an E36 BMW...

  • Today we went to go check out a 1997 BMW E36 328i Convertible and ended up buying it. This time around I got to work on rebuilding the entire front end, only for it to break again. I really don't know why I keep investing in these old BMW's but I do quite like them.

    Thanks for stopping by! I hope this video helps anyone looking to buy an E36 or replace the radiator in their car. The weakpoint of these 90's BMWs are the cooling system, they are pretty much hopeless. Glad we were able to get the car back up and running. Will probably do the water pump and thermostat next. What a mess. ☕

    That car is really beautiful, I hope you keep it for a long time. And the issue you had isn’t really the fault of the car, it’s just wear on 26 year old plastic components. It’s probably best to overhaul all the plastic and rubber pieces on the car so that it can run for many more years without issues.

    • @bendaga
      @bendaga  Рік тому +6

      Thanks man. Yeah I don’t really blame the car, just seems to be a common issue on any 90’s BMW. An overhaul seems imminent

    props to Ray for learning to drive stick! glad you were able to get it fixed and didn't overheat the engine or anything. Looking at it another way, you must truly truly love driving these old BMWs if you're willing to put up with the repairs lol

    I had the same thing happen on the original plastic radiator of my 97 M3. I was able to get the hose back on what was left of the radiator neck and make it home. Solution? Buy a Mishimoto all aluminum radiator and never have that problem again. [I've owned the car for 25 years now] Buy a metal impeller water pump and metal thermostat housing at the same time.
    I see you spent $200 on a plastic radiator. The Mishimoto radiator is $300 here and you never have to worry or replace it again (lifetime warranty as well). Plus it provides better cooling.

    • @bendaga
      @bendaga  Рік тому +1

      You’re right. I was in a pinch and wanted to get it running, or else aluminum radiator is the way to go. Maybe i’ll end up doing it again in the future (along with the water pump and thermostat)

    It sounds like you were short on time, but ideally you remove the cooling fan and pull out the plastic fan shroud before installing the radiator. It would have been easier to slide the radiator in and the fins wouldn't scrape against everything while you inserted it.

    These cars are typically built in colder climates, for example its highly recommended to avoid driving European cars in California as this problem happens very frequently. I seen so many BMV's break down at the side of the freeway.

  • @carflixng
    @carflixng Рік тому

    It broke cause you using the wrong type of clamp to hold the hose to the radiator. When the coolants heats up the radiator also expands due to thermal expansion and the clamp currently on it won't so over time it would crack or break again.

    You are supposed to do a whole cooling system refresh when you buy a e36 before you start driving and thrashing it, if it’s never been done before or you don’t know, DO IT. Every 80-100k miles it needs a refresh, also refresh it with metal upgrades not stock plastic so the cooling system actually lasts and you won’t run into issues like these noobs. 😅Replace the thermostat, thermostat housing with metal, metal radiator (csf makes a great full metal radiator) , hoses, fan clutch, expansion tank, metal water pump, and you are perfect.
