Late to the game, but in regards to Maus, the jews were mice because that was what they were called by antisemitic Europeans. He used that racist slur to seed the anthropomorphic elements and why Germans were cats. As far as appropriation, you can't appropriate your own immediate family's experience, he life was shaped by the people in the story and he is in the story himself. As a grandchild of a Polish Holocaust survivor and a person who read Maus, it was incredibly impactful in the way it portrayed generational truama.
Thank you so much for offering this historical context! I am glad Maus has been affirming for your family's experience. ❤️ -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
I am very grateful for this video! 💯
I’m an artist, lately I’ve been enamored and inspired by many different cultures around the world. Which in turn compels me to represent them within my art.
Growing up in the United States I find there’s not much to be inspired by (other than the landscapes and nature)
So I branch out to find inspiration within other cultures. Not wanting to tread into the territory of cultural appropriation of course.
This conversation has really shed a light on a topic that has left me conflicted for many years now.
We're so glad this video is helping you think through this complex territory! It is good to be inspired by other cultures and fine to pay homage as long as you're being respectful. We also have this video on portraying people of color in your artwork, which you might find interesting:

Banksy seems to have jumped into the trap of being performative, because their message seems, in the scheme of things, trite. And the artwork itself is ineffective in hitting Banksy's expressed target. The story is simply way bigger than this image suggests.
I am currently dedicating my senior thesis to this subject and as an artist is incredibly interesting to look at the ethical use of art, as well as its importance to other cultures and minorities. This was an incredibly resourceful video, Thank you!
We're so happy you found it helpful! Good luck on your thesis! For further information, here are the links to the artworks, articles, and artists mentioned in the video: artprof.org/pro-development/art-cultural-appropriation/

I know of Maus, but have never read it. But I do know as a Jew, that it’s the norm for my people to be controversial and even offensive when it comes to the Holocaust. (See movies like THE PRODUCERS and JOJO RABBIT.) it’s a coping mechanism, if you will, to poke fun of the Nazis or make people uncomfortable while discussing this specific era in history.
I really appreciate you folks tackling this discussion, but I really wish you had taken on some examples that were trying to represent your own ethnicities. Or even if you’d taken on more contemporary work like Disney or Dreamworks animations or comics like Ms Marvel or Black Panther.
to clarify.... banksy is not a grafitti artist hes a street artist and contemporary artist.
Very interesting, thank you.
What do u think of people who say that cultural appropriation isn't real, and that those voicing out their concerns about it are just being too sensitive?
Imo, that's an excuse to not acknowledge the issues! -Prof Lieu
Really interesting discussion
I actually had a question…would to be okay to mix certain cultures together (in a respectful way) to make a culture in a fantasy world….let’s say mixing aspects of Vietnamese and Chinese culture together? Would that be appreciation or appropriation..and if so at what point will it cross that boundary…what part would be good and what is disrespectful
That's a great question. I think Avatar the Last Airbender is a commonly cited show that mixes influences from different south and east Asian cultures really well. I was looking for the video where we had Jordan and Cat talking about it...I think this is it. I hope it's helpful for you! ua-cam.com/video/bl6rmUh6cFc/v-deo.html -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
@@artprof thankyou so much!
Clara, I really enjoy watching this channel but I noticed that most of the time you encounter any name that is unfamiliar to you, you don't seem to try to pronounce it. I imagine the list of artists you choose to discuss are already agreed upon between the panel before the recording? How about putting a bit more effort into learning how to pronounce names? I think that'll mean a lot to the artist with foreign names.
Thank you so much for watching! We appreciate this feedback. We are a very small organization with limited staff and resources, so we do our very best with the time we have, and we'll always aim to be better! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Is painting health care workers in masks representation or appropriation?
Representation, because it's normal within that community, for nurses to wear masks, and if done respectfully to their culture, can edify that community. In those terms, even though the artist is gaining cultural, social, and economic capital by including them in their art, it is not at the expense of the subject. As the first part of the Hippocratic Oath states, the art is doing "No harm".
@@BigHenFor I'm going to think about it. You make a great point as usual. I'm making a proposal to my director of nursing to do a series."my people, unmasked". She may agree with you, I'm open to it.
@@kateknowles6780 That is a great idea because nurses are often taken for granted, and they are the backbone of any healthcare service. But to me, most importantly they are people whose contribution should be celebrated. At our best and most fragile times nurses are there, helping us get through those times. Go for it!
Health care workers aren't a race are they, so how could it be appropriation?
what brand of clay is good?
Depends on what type of clay you want, there is plastilene (oil based) ceramic (water based) and air dry. -Prof Lieu

May I have a link to purchase an online shop? in my country there are only a few brands of clay ,, once there is a rarity
This message it's different .. inside the artist it's a dezaster.. Something personal, does really matter the colour??? we all have feelings... I don't know, my oppinion... Lots of oppinions.... Not all art comes outside from happy things that happen in your life... It's not only art.... It's a felling... It's not racism (talking about Banksy)
I agree, Banksy isn't being racist in anyway. Rather, it raises the question: Does this painting meet Banksy's expressed goal of getting the message of the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 to White people who are either neutral or antithetical to it? You see there is no point "singing to the choir". Nor is it effective if there is no context. Compare Banksy's Painting with the New Yorker Magazine cover of George Floyd from a point of effective communication with the audience. Which one not only makes a statement but also provides context, evidence if you will, about not only the death of George Floyd but, of why people - both black and white - are protesting his and other police killings of Black people? A Composition begins in the artist's understanding of the subject, and I think Banksy's understanding of the subject is not fully formed as he thinks. So his argument is not substantial enough. In fact, he needed to listen more and think more in my opinion. Not only to the Black Lives Matter side, but to the neutral, and antithetical side too. He set himself a a very tough goal, and I don't think he succeeded. It's disappointing to me more than anything. It might be useful if you look at the Art Prof episodes i)"New Yorker Cover Illustrations and Race" from July, and ii) "Art Rivals: Painting vs Illustration" video put up last week. These might explain why Banksy might have been on a hiding to nothing.
