Yanaka is a charming neighborhood in the Taito ward of Tokyo, Japan, which offers a nostalgic glimpse into the city's past. Renowned for its traditional Shitamachi ambiance, associated with the common people's culture and life before WWII, Yanaka boasts preserved wooden houses, narrow alleyways, and a serene atmosphere that contrasts with the bustling Tokyo metropolis. The neighborhood is also known for its numerous temples and shrines, providing a spiritual sanctuary within the urban sprawl. Yanaka is a captivating blend of old-world charm and contemporary Tokyo life, making it a must-visit for those seeking cultural immersion and a bit of respite from the bustling city.
    Yanaka Cemetery:
Yanaka Cemetery is a serene and historic burial ground. Established in 1872, it exudes an Edo-period charm, with its winding paths, centuries-old trees, and an array of weathered tombstones. This resting place is not only a testament to Japan's past but also a serene oasis within the bustling metropolis. The cemetery is known for housing the graves of famous literary figures and serves as a poignant location for strolls, contemplation, and cultural reflection. During the Obon festival, it comes to life as families gather to remember and honor their ancestors, adding a touch of tradition to this timeless site.
Yanaka Ginza & Main Commercial Street:
Yanaka Ginza is a charming and nostalgic shopping street known for its traditional ambiance. Strolling through this area feels like stepping back in time, with its wooden storefronts, retro facades, and tranquil atmosphere providing a stark contrast to the surrounding modern city. The street is lined with quaint shops, cozy eateries, and street vendors offering a variety of local crafts and delicious snacks. It's a place where visitors can savor authentic Japanese street food, explore unique boutiques, and once again experience the timeless charm of Shitamachi. This area really showcases Japan's rich cultural heritage. Yanaka Ginza is a beloved destination for those seeking an authentic and historical Tokyo experience.
    Yanaka Street food:
The street food in this area is truly a delectable journey through Japanese culinary traditions. Local favorites like yakitori, taiyaki, takoyaki, and many other Japanese specialties can be easily purchased from the various vendors that line the street. Exploring some of these stalls and tasting the food found in Yanaka Ginza perfectly embodies the essence of Japanese street food culture, enveloped in a nostalgic, old-time Japanese atmosphere.
    Ueno Park:
Ueno Park, nestled in the heart of Tokyo, is a multifaceted treasure seamlessly blending nature, culture, and history. Dating back to 1873, it ranks among Tokyo's oldest and most esteemed parks. Spring ushers in an enchanting display of cherry blossoms, making it a prime destination for hanami, the traditional practice of cherry blossom viewing. Ueno Park hosts several distinguished museums, like the Tokyo National Museum, showcasing Japan's rich artistic heritage. Inside the park there is a shrine, which captivated me with its aesthetic Torii gates, which are a common feature at Shinto shrine entrances. The serene Shinobazu Pond, adorned with lotus blooms in summer, further enhances its charm. The park's spacious, tranquil setting provides a break from the city's commotion, offering a harmonious blend of relaxation, cultural enrichment, and a deep connection to Tokyo's natural beauty and history.
    Asakusa Temple:
Asakusa Shrine, also known as Sensoji Temple, was established in the 7th century, making it Tokyo's oldest temple and a spiritual hub for both locals and tourists. What's especially striking is the remarkable architectural detail of its massive buildings. As an active shrine, many visitors partake in the traditional purification ritual preceding prayers. Worshippers symbolically cleanse themselves with water to purify their hands and mouth, signifying spiritual readiness. Following this, incense is offered, creating a fragrant ambiance as a gesture of respect and communication with the divine. The grand Kaminarimon Gate, adorned with a colossal red lantern, serves as the entrance to the temple complex. Inside, Nakamise-dori, which is a bustling market street, visitors are presented with a vibrant array of traditional Japanese souvenirs and street food. The main hall stands majestically, providing a place for offerings and prayer. Asakusa Shrine's profound history and captivating architecture render it a must-visit destination, blending spirituality with cultural exploration.

Yanaka is definitely one of my favorite spots to visit in Tokyo. It's not too crowded and chill. Glad you got to visit the area! Ueno park is beautiful as well and they always have interesting events happening there! I wanted to see you trying to order food in Japanese. Maybe next time.... 😁

That would actually have been fun to show me ordering in broken Japanese. I would have loved to do that but my friend is not really a filmmaker so I'm not sure how comfortable he would have been holding the camera to film me. When I do go back to Japan I will focus more on food because I feel that a lot of people are interested in that...and there were so many food places in this area. Also, I recently learnt that Yanaka is really known for having many stray cats. I would love to go back and focus on that aspect too.

It isn't very often that I jump on a video so quickly to watch it, but it was the case of this video. And once again I was not disappointed! What a charming and relaxing tour with you two. So beautiful spots out there. This mix of nature, temples and old style restaurants... it's candy for the eyes 😉
Thank you for this new video and I'm already looking forward for the next one. Dewa mata 😊

Arigatou gozaimasu. I'm so glad you watched the video. Tokyo is vast and has so many areas to visit that it would take weeks to really delve into all of it. Yanaka Ginza is actually one of these places that is beautiful but not as touristy. Many tourists focus on Asakusa Shrine and the like. In this video, I wanted to showcase popular places but also hidden gems where mostly local people go.

Great video! I didn't know the Yanaka district of Tokyo, it looks really beautiful and quiet. That's what I like about Tokyo, such a big city yet with quiet and small neighbourhoods.

You are right. Just Tokyo has 23 districts. Obviously it's possible to visit more than 1 per day but if you really want to take your time it'd take at least a day per district. Thanks for the comment Zou ;-)

Your intro is so cool! The cemetery was very interesting, never knew cremation was the standard in Japan. So envious of the food you ate. Really want to go someday.
