As an Irish speaker, unlike with Scots Gaelic, it is quite difficult to pick out the words in Welsh. Reading it is actually more difficult. Welsh is not an easy language to learn. It's so impressive to see a politician who was so erudite and honest. You can be all but guaranteed that most politicians know that he was right, they don't have his courage or they don't care. They have their wealthy enclaves where they can watch it all burn from the comfort of their homes, far away from the people that they claim to represent.
@@aussiesam01 There was a higher standard of Welsh taught back then. Have you seen, or heard, what is taught now in Cwrs Mynediad? It is the Welsh of a peasant.
What a legend! Powell was such an intelligent man, I understand he spoke a dozen languages. He obviously had a profound respect for the constituent parts of the UK, and it's great to hear him encourage the Welsh to remain within the UK. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful clip. Powell was my grandparents’ MP, for the Ulster Unionists in South Down, Northern Ireland. They were in awe of him and described him as ‘a scholar and a gentleman’. It’s hard to believe that the British Parliament once had a person of such quality in it’s ranks. How far we have fallen.
He gave us a serious warning from the past that is coming true and he was demonized for it and he was one of the most clear minded and sensible statesmen I've ever witnessed.
Even back in his day, this man stood head and shoulders above any of his supposed peers, today their is not one serving politician that could have come close to his level of integrity or intelligence.
Fascinating stuff :-) His pronounciation is english-accented but not heavily so, and even though he is visibly searching for the words, he isn’t translating. He is constructing his sentences in welsh from the ground up.
This might explain why he has those blue eyes and jet black hair. He has a little bit of Early European Farmer as it is suspected many Welsh do more than average. It would mean he is more directly descended from the people who built Stonehenge. If so, no wonder he felt such a mystical connection to England, his descendants could date back 6,000 years.
He was probably perfectly literate in the language. He sounds very good, just has the non-fluency of someone unused to having to physically speak it, something I've gone through as a self-taught language learner. Remarkable man.
Btw you're right about the part about independence, it's a question about whether Wales and Scotland should pursue independence. The part where it's got [???] He is saying it's important to develop the language
Interesting indeed. He connected through education with a culture he was not brought up with, but he made an effort. As opposed to the invaders of the current day. \o
Whilst visiting a Welsh friend several years ago, I asked about her children and she told me one of her sons was really struggling with his English. This I thought rather odd as I knew the boy was at least ten years old, so I asked how he could be struggling at his age. As it turns out Welsh is his first language so it all made sense after that. I learned a lesson that day about the how the Welsh value preserving their native language.
An excellent video for March the 1st. In the advancing face of mangled patois, we will yet have to preserve the true English language in the same manner.

Yma O Hyd! I may only be partially Scottish, however I share a great deal of respect and feel empathy for the loss of all our shared cultural legacies and its with great pain that I continually watch the degradation of the average representative of mankind... May the future hold the preservation, no matter how small, of the truth, culture, and members of every possible peoples and may the present utter debasement of all of humanity be yet another passing of a dark page of history once more.
Today, there is not a single one that's currently infesting Troughminster, that comes even close to Enoch Powell's integrity, courage and intelligence.
I'm half English, half Welsh American. It's funny, nobody talks about the Welsh here (at least relative to Scots and Irish and certainly English), and I really don't have much common knowledge of them. All i know is Rahl Dahl, Dylan Thomas and Jimmy Wilde and Joe Calzaghe. It's nice to hear a little something about them from who is possibly the greatest Britan since Shakespeare. Thanks DOA.
