W126 one of the best cars of true old school german engineering. I know a lot of reach people who has new ferrari and lambo, but many of them has a low mileage 560sel in garage, because it gives some special feeling.
it’s nice seeing an actual workhorse vs a garage queen. glad this car was used
Still has relatively low miles for the age.
@@username8644for the age, but 110 is still quite an amount, it’s not a showcar.
@@Fly_By_Gaming Agreed, but I wouldn't call it a workhorse. 110k at the age means it was driving less than 3k miles a year on average which places it as a secondary vehicle at best. I put that amount on my 136k mile car in 2 months. And barely any of them were highway miles.
Can’t beat the old Mercedes - wouldn’t buy any Mercedes made in the past 10 years, but would totally buy these 70’s and 80’s Benz’s
Today's Cars is junkkk
They were well built, but with all those complex hydraulics the work can be expensive. Not sure I'd drive one as a daily since I can barely hold a wrench 😅.
@@issavibez394did you even listen to the video? Talk about junk. It squeaked/creaked the entire time.
@@user59371it seems that you aren't familiar with the condition greek roads are in. It was most probably a torture for this car
I’d agree, though I would probably not consider a Benz made in the last 25 years.
Nothing quite says "here comes the Yakuza boss," like a big-body pre-merger AMG.
Lol so true.
With a body in the trunk
So I am from Greece. This Mercedes as the service sticker says at 01:38, was lived in an very little beautiful island called Limnos, for some period of time or all it's life. Fun fact, this telephone number is from the 80's period. The numbers changed completely in the 90's with way more numbers. Idk how this sticker is still there.
P.S The car service at 01:38 is still open at this day 😊
This is the Mercedes time period that I grew up with and adore. Doors and trunk lids that went "Thunk." Overengineered and built like a tank. Elegant and simple. Nothing for show. The car itself was proof that you had style and prestige.
If a base SEL was "Kind of Blue" style of sophisticated and accessible, then this AMG is a CEO in a suit who occasionally switched up Jazz for Motorhead.
What's unbelievable is that the JDM version of this car was on sale for 30k$ 6 years ago, but it was sold later just 3 months back on bringatrailer for 100k$+
BaT just brings out all the fools with their money because there are a lot of nice vehicles there, and they’re easy to get if you have enough cash to throw.
Mercedes & BMWs of that era were so much more solid and yet characterful than today’s rolling turbo computers. Quality. Btw: I like the fancy camera work, Ted. It’s nice to see you enjoying the car.❤
This video is insane for me personally. My first car was my dad's 1986 420SEL which was handed down to me in 1997 after being my older sister's first car. I absolutely loved it. A silver beauty and a VERY solid car.
The kicker is, in 2000, my dad took the car back from me so he could send it to - now hang on to your Spartan style helmets - Greece!!!!
Can't beat the character and history of the W126.
Old Mercedes was just peak. They're just a shadow now of what they once were.
Mercedes (especially pre merger AMG) + Tedward = awesome day! Love the different camera angles aswell
The best era of Mercedes Benz specialy this rarest piece like AMG w126.
Thanks for drive this kind of Mercedes Benz and value this cars.
One of the best S classes. Hoping for a W140 video next
These look so good dude. Every angle is 🤩
Glad I found this channel 2 years ago! You became my favorite person to watch. You find some real gems!
I like how Cadillac borrowed the car for years, put 17K miles on it and blew the engine then said “here’s your car back thanks.”
there may have been other incentives or arrangements that we don’t know about. Without that info it’s tough to see it as careless
@@TedwardDrives I imagine there would’ve been a worthy incentive for AMG North America, it just sounded funny in the story.
I would guess that they more or less "rented" it in some form. (So not without AMG getting money in some form for it)
Very nice old school Merc! Used to see these all the time growing up. Side note: Been following for a few years and glad to see the passenger view camera back again in addition to the POV! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the dedication with these videos.
Glad you like them! Thank You for watching them!
I've always been a huge fan of these older 80s-90s Mercs. To then see one with an expansive history like this is always a treat. Keep up the quality content!
Mercedes 560 sel and sec amg cars will always be some of my favorite cars ever build. Amazing video as always!
Thanks for sharing the story of this car with us. Truly fascinating. Its one thing to have something special, but its a whole another thing to have something special that has a story to tell.
Back when Mercedes were actually built to a standard. Thanks for another great review of a great car from my teen years!
Just the sound the doors make when u open them 🤤
V8 Benz is the best
V12 Benz is better though.
@@philipcooper8297 tbh the V12s are just really quiet and understated in most vehicles since its pretty much S Class only.
The V8s just sound way nicer and have more than enough power imo.
That being said, a 65 AMG do is a top tier car.
So many awesome AMG V8’s to choose from going back many years.
Absolutely
That’s a true gem 💎 a 126 with the 6.0L ? Wow
I see you with those new camera angles! 👀
Shoutout to my comrades in Greece for understanding how amazing this machine so as to not destroy it hahaha
Hans Gruber‘s old company car. Nice.
This is just so choice and period correct, it's awesome.
6:48 - thanks for showing how the whole set up looks. I must say it looks "intriguing"
Had a 87 560SEL one of the best cars ever built . Rear heated seats and reclining. self leveling suspension. perfect
Gotta love a Pre-Merger AMG, lovely car!
Such a nice classic!
W140 Grand Edition or 600 next!
The lore behind this car makes it all the better.
Ah, the W126, the official Gambino crime family cruiser.
Love those big steering wheels in old cars!
Tedward this is so cool!
Glad you share the fizz on this one! I loved it
Bruno Sacco design are the best ❤
Oh no Tedward, please keep your videos strictly POV, they're why I enjoy your channel so much, and what makes your content that much more enjoyable than other YT reviewers.
Can’t stand to see my face?
Not at all lmao!! The POV-only format is already perfect. Why change it? And we get to see your face in rear view mirrors from time to time 😂
Edit: Switching between POV and the onboard camera disrupts the immersion that makes your content so enjoyable.
@@TedwardDrives Ted, follow your own path, but I agree with deviation100. POV is your USP. I watch lots of 'dialogue to camera' car reviewers and I enjoy them, but your POV hits different. It's unique and special. It has a 'C'etait un Rendez-vous' vibe. Maybe you could end every film with you meeting a pretty girl :)
@@user-vl8fb1gu6k they actually used 450 SEL W116 to film that, even though it sounds like 275 GTB.
Yea have to at least nod slightly in agreement. POV reviews are superior, cam to face reviews are EVERYWHERE and less engaging at least 4 me. Though, as long as u focus on the POV viewpoint in majority then I’m still very ok with it.
There is nothing sexier than old school stance, like this Merc has. You cant recreate it today.
What a beauty!
The creaking sound is just the door panels against the door sil, if you put grease on them they get quiet. My W126 has no creaks or squeaks or rattles with minor interior maintenence.
Early! :O
Old Mercedes cars are some of the best looking older cars!
Is the dual cam setup going to be the new normal? I think it works well. Great video and great car.
experimenting.... we'll see how it ends up. I do like having another angle to cut to but I'll get creative with it
That is one cool car!
Woah face reveal! 6:31 nice to see you outside of a chrome horn button or a rearview. That gopro rig looks awkward to drive with but I appreciate you capturing at eye level.
Such a cool looking Moscow mobster-esque mobile
i absolutely love those wheels
Fully with you
Awesome car. The only thing that would make it even better is if it has the AMG 4 valve DOHC heads. I guess 1986 was too early for that head? Watching this makes me want to get my 90 560SEL going again.
I live in Massachusetts, I might have seen this at a cars and coffee last year
Thanks!
Thank you!
Really liking the second camera angle!
The "AMG Chevy" was the 1994-96 Impala SS and the Caprice 9C1 (Police).
In the town where I grew up in the 80s, there were two AMG S Class’s. One was driven by a drug trafficker and the other by a doctor from Nigeria. I loved seeing them drive around when I was a kid.
Hope someone restores this soon.
Are you sure the replacement was a 6l AMG and not just a regular 560? It seems a bit like. bc no AMG branding was visible. A late Euro 560 would feel a lot more peppy than a US 560 as well.
😁 The part about the brakes... The first time i drove on a german autobahn i found "my reason" why german cars had good brakes.
-> the piece of Autobahn i drove is in the very south, and the exits i saw were basically short pieces to slow down and then 90° corners.
These cars were fast, but you need to get off the autobahn at some point, so you need to throw out the anchor hard enough to get through the corner.
!! Fully agree on the sleeper thing at the end and the AMG's of today.
I got a W212 one and it does look more sporty than the normal W212 but not anywhere near as drastically different as everything that came after. And today (as it is 14 years old by now) almost nobody knows that it's not just a "lowered 4cyl diesel" when they just see it.
There are few enthusiasts who know, and so it is kind of a sleeper on the road, which i do like a lot.
Haha I think people underestimate stopping distances from 120mph since they don’t do it very often here
The interior creaking would drive me crazy
second, and love these cars, be careful with the hood! I went to buy one and the salesman went to pop the hood. he put it through the windshield! I was like, ill call you later
lol!
It’s old, gold. I’d have to find a garage space for it.
Tedward, I want your opinion. My friend, I live in a very, very crowded city (it is the capital), and I am thinking about buying a manual daily truck. But I am not sure if it was the right call to buy it manual because it might be exhausting in the traffic
Tedward sir, i have 560sel now, and i want know, maybe u help to answer. Ole bentley or rolls royce 80s-90s era - have similar feeling, whe u drive it??? Or bentley/rolls way smoother???
I still might @ Rare Classic Cars but it just occurred to me that what GM was probably doing was looking for somebody to work with them on what became the LT5 in the 1990 Corvette ZR1. Obviously they went with a lotus and Mercury Marine partnership there.
Awesome
I'd kill for one of these with an OM606 swapped in it.
Lovely old Benz woohoo ❤
6:36 I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen you on camera.
I've done intense research and investigating in the W116 and W126 for the last 25 years and I never knew that cadillac was NEVER involved with the creation of the 6.0 M117.968 engine? The correct answer is Porsche designed ALL pre merger AMG Mercedes Benz all aluminum light weight high performance Engine producing 385 Hp
We like the bad boys 😉
But is it the 2 valve or 4 valve version? The 6.0 could be had as both.
I've seen AMG Mitsubishi once) obviously it wasn't very popular)
W126: the best!
Hi, ¿what car is the beautiful red classic of the picture of the channel? Thanks
I had a set of Recaro C’s, I was stoked when a guy traded them even for a set of BMW sport seats out of my 85 M635csi. After living with them for a week I found out why, they look cool but are horrible seats! Sold them for big money, shipped them to Cali from GA.
Looks like a regular 5.6 m117 engine, the 6.0 had AMG twin cam heads
That was the later version. This was an early 6.0L
So rare to see a W126 6.0 , especially one thats been well used! Just needs Euro lights and AMG bumpers.
Afaik there were no 5.2 conversions by AMGs for the M117. It was 5.4 or 6.0 only, and the 6.0s usually had the DOHC heads, wbich made a massive difference to the power. ( 380 bhp +) . However the car in the video just had the standard SOHC heads, which must be much rarer than the 6.0 DOHCs.
I’ve driven a hammer which I believe had dohc. That car was a monster
Mercedes now thinks that fancy electronics is luxury. I love this type of old school understated luxury.
How wild would it have been if GM allowed AMG to build the Northstar.
Old Benz > New Benz. No questions about it, this is a glorious machine.
One of the greatest AMGs and Mercedes at the same time. What a car.
What is 'the Depreciation Society'? Searching, I only get an accounting organization. Do they have other old cars that represent great values?
search Instagram. its just an individual with a collection of heavily depreciated luxury cars
They really needed to make that steering wheel a touch smaller imo
Welp... If it was used by Cadillac back then for evaluation... Boy did they mess up
Greek here; Limnos is so small for this beast! Not surprised it ended up here though, Greeks love their Mercs.
Formidable
The sound (and the torque) are not unlike a modern big diesel straight six you’d find in e.g. a BMW 530d? These are probably faster than this AMG, come to think of it, and I guess rarer in the U.S.?
It blows my mind how squeaky the interior is! I wonder if the audio is amplifying it or it’s actually that bad!
It’s all audio accurate haha
I wonder how current luxury electric cars will look like in 40 years?
Probably like my iPod mini buried somewhere in a box
Probably will fare better, all things considered. Some LCD panels and an upgraded battery pack will be a simple fix. Whereas finding 40+ year old mechanical parts for a one-off AMG flagship sedan from the 80s will be virtually unobtainable.
I'm from Greece 😅
Dont these go for like $$200k+ currently
Having transcended through several decades of automotive evolution; "No replacement for displacement" is my enthusiast mantra. Love it! I do believe electric cars and smaller fuel efficient engines are a better solution, but long live nostalgia!
Be careful the muscle car bois will chastise you calling a German car a muscle car. I got that treatment comparing my 560sl to one.
They'll whine no matter what
Back in the day tho, Benz was practically pretty much German muscle car manufacturer. 😂
@@Aleiza_49 exactly! People literally forget Mercedes had some large cubic inch torquey V8s. They had a 6.9 V8 engine at one point.
you see you obviously have impeccable taste I can tell. the c126 widebody is the car everybody references but to me this is 100% the fundamental idea when I think of what I see premerger mags. same with the ce 6.0. its cool but they can stick where the sun don't shine. a hammer is one thing and 1 thing only. its a w124 300e sedan with the dohc 4v m117. the reason is so legendary is because it was the fastest SEDAN in the world. I will accept Johnathan Hodgemans s124 because come on wagons are the best but not technically a hammer. the 6.0 in dohc or dohc alone does not make the SEC a hammer. I here all this nonsense from people you would think know better. the 6.0 coupe really isn't a hammer either. its not a 4 door car and that was the whole concept of building the hammer. the hammer can have any one of the displacements that AMG did their dohc conversion on, you seemed to have studied up and I really appreciate but then as long as I watched you you always are careful to know what it is that your are driving. im of course a fan of the tuned Porsches you drove through the years but this is amazing. to have access to one of these to drive and with it being an important car in the history of AMG is incredible. was this imported straight from Greece or had a specialist like Blakely or Dean L procure it for its owner. this is the w126 for me I'd take an SEL any day over a sec. I've been dreaming of a company that starts doing tributes of premerger cars like singer with 2 style either as O.E. using reproduction parts with modern materials and safety but as true to the originals as possible. the second would be full balls out builds all using lare model AMG running gear like a carbon paneled 300te full aero mods with the tt 4.0 at 900hp or build a carbon shell shooting brake sec widebody like a coach builder style interior with wine chiller grey poupon holders and a flip out table in the wagon area. there so many people I think would be interested. I grew up watch every episode of Miami vice from premiere to final show not the movie and people of all ages know are getting to know about these cars. I think its a money maker. feel free to pass my idea along to any contacts you have LOL. great car and video!! cheers

Hi tedward im a fan for 3 years now pls notice me and pin me
7:06 It`s the leather. 😥 If you drive another W126 with a textile interior, you won`t hear anything like this.
This car is body kit only
had a 300SD of this era Benz, drove like a drunk slug
