You cannot hide! I see you! There is no life in the void, only death!
You draw far too much attention to yourself Mister 'Underhill'!
What do you want?
A little more caution from you. That is no trinket you carry.
I carry nothing!
Indeed.
I can avoid being seen if I wish. But to disappear entirely, that is a rare gift.
Who are you?
Are you frightened?
Yes.
Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you.
Let him go! Or I'll have you Longshanks!
You have a stout heart little hobbit, but that will not save you. You can no longer wait for the wizard Frodo. They're coming.
What are they?
They were once Men. Great kings of Men.
Then Sauron the Deceiver gave to them nine Rings of Power. Blinded by their greed, they took them without question. One by one falling into darkness. Now they are slaves to his will. They are the Nazgul, Ringwraiths, neither living nor dead. At all times they feel the presence of the Ring. Drawn to the power of the One. They will never stop hunting you.
Where are you taking us?
Into the wild.
How do we know this Strider is a friend of Gandalf?
I think a servant of the Enemy would look fairer and feel fouler.
He's foul enough!
We have no choice but to trust him.
But where is he leading us?
To Rivendell, Master Gamgee. To the House of Elrond.
Did you hear that? Rivendell! We're going to see the Elves!
It's the little moments with the hobbits I love. Portraying them as domestic and simple without making them punch lines was no easy feat, in writing or acting, and things like when they burst in to fight Aragorn...so innocent.
hobbits can surprisingly hardy when it comes down to it, and are one of the more braver races when they forced into it
@@twiliblade Yes, I'm reading the chapter The Scouring of the Shire, and I'm impressed with the hobbits' hardiness for such little people. I'm actually cheering them on as I keep reading!
I can't believe they considered Nicholas Cage to play Aragorn. I'm so thankful that Viggo got the role, he was just perfect!
+Areli Gunner Actually, they called and begged him to take it :)
+ClandestineOstrich Yes. Apparently his son convinced him to do it, since Viggo hadn't ever read LOTR.
+Areli Gunner Agree. Cage is a very good actor, but I dunno like.. something about his physical appearance would not suit the character. A bit too friendly looking.
+Gandalf Greyhame "Vegan Mortenstein" XD you saw the honest trailer too?
***** I know. I love honest trailers XD XD
"You have a stout heart, little hobbit..but that will not save you."
When you realize it was Sam's stout heart that actually saved everyone.
Not aganist Nine..
His stout heart and the Frying Pan of Orc Bonking.
Sam's and Frodo's. The movies don't show it as well, but Frodo was a bad ass MF and a hero.
@@CT-pi2glexcept for when he was whining like a baby
It wouldn't have saved him if the 9 had caught up to him without Strider to bail his ass.
Those quick shots of the Nazgul as Aragorn says "They will never stop hunting you." Those shots... the atmosphere, its haunting, it's perfect.
01:16 Sam is such a badass, bursting into a room ready to beat up a grown man three times his size and armed with a sword with his bare hands. And Pippin is carrying a chair for support lol.
I think a chair would just break if he tried to hit him with it lol
And Merry was gonna use the candle to light him on fire. 😂😂😂
Let him go or i'll have you Longshanks!! 😂
definitely didnt hurt that merry and pippin were several pints deep into the Prancing Pony's ale

Same here
When I'm very angry I scream like that...
I just watched when Aragorn has his coronation.
It's so amazing to think that this man, a ranger who sits in the inn smoking pipeweed will one day become king.
Barliman Butterbur can tell people that the king of gondor used to visit his inn :D
That's what makes his coronation beautiful. A character development of a mysterious ranger "Strider" that was revealed to be an exiled King.
That’s my kind of persona.
I’d rather sit in the back in the shadows in a corner and go unnoticed and watch those all around me watch me while I watch them watch me.
I guess there’s a reason why I got Aragon that character quiz which are you.
@G E T R E K T 905 Exactly. "Great men do not seek power; they have power thrust upon them."
He's gonna have to quit smoking when he moves in with Arwen though. Elf queens do NOT tolerate the smell of tobacco in or around their palaces!
Haha in the books Barliman barely believed the hobbits when they came home and told him that Strider was now king. 😂
1:15 damn these hobbits are really the most loyal and bravest characters in the whole triology. Even if they have no skills. They are willing to die for Frodo and take any risk to defend him.
Mostly Sam
They don't know any better at this point in the story.
You know in theatres, I thought that Frodo and company traded rooms with 4 other random hobbits to stay with Aragorn. Hence the Nazgul stabbed these 4 other random hobbits. That would of been really dark.
ewu77 fitting....would have given reason for the horses to start sounding off.
1:15 an underrated scene to be sure and one of the reasons why Samwise is such a great friend, no weapon at all and is in front with his fists out saying “Square up Strider!!!” 😂😂 love it
I literally searched for: ''LET HIM GO OR I'LL HAVE YOU LONGSHANKS''
1:16😁
Sam's got some guts, I'll give him that

R.I.P bree gate guy, flattened to a pancake by nazgul
@G E T R E K T 905 did this happen in the books
@@Nevarden It did not. From memory the Nazgul never entered Bree, it was a mob of citizens of Bree, riled up by some of Sauron's human spies, who broke into the Hobbits' room to kill them.
@@DoctorXander wow quite the difference! Thx!
1:45 That smoke always got me chills
The way Aragorn compliments the Hobbits here and Eowyn in the Two Towers is brilliant. Never coming across as condescending, but always realistic, while showing the character traits he values as a hero: courage.
I've been in love with this trilogy ever since I was a kid and I always love Aragorn's reveal/intro here. It's simple, subtle and a silent excitement for us.
and to think that in the early drafts of the book Strider was a big hobbit with wooden shoes called Trotter...
Nope.
This movie still gives me chill... MASTERPIECE!
"Are you frightened?"
"Yes."
I guess "No shit, Sherlock" wouldn't have sounded very Tolkeiny :|
Pippins choice of weapon: a chair
I looove this scene ^u^ Aragorn is one of my favorite characters especially in this part... And Sam :')
Aragorn is my favorite character.
Frodo grew up hearing tales of Sauron and believed in his demise. To behold Sauron's spirit focused on him, taunting him, must have been chilling.
imagine if they gave viggo a role in game of thrones
I can imagine him as Jon
Jon is either 15 or around 18-19, at the start, depending on whether you go by the books or show. Viggo is...quite a lot older.
I could see him more as a Barristan type character. An old, tough, grizzled fighter. Thr Blackfish
(Accidentally pressed reply too soon) maybe or even someone like Kevan Lannister.
tyson thao
Or Viggo in Walking Dead. lol. I can't see him as anyone other than Rick.
Merry: he's foul enough
Aragorn: douche
1:33. Am I a bad person for snickering a bit whenever that happens?
No less for having your daughter burned for sake of winning a war you ended up losing anyway :P
Aragorn is so charismatic , his voice ´s kinda hot ! Viggo was great , as most of actors of this movie were actually
Man Howard Shore really knocked it out the park with these choir sections
I love how quick Aragorn pulls his sword.
Nazgul so angry he flipped over the bed lol
"At all times they feel the presence of the ring." Can't feel the presence while they are just outside the window where the ring actually is
The scene where they stabbed the pillows genuinely scared me when I was younger.
For a moment at 0:43 I thought Aragorn was gonna slap Frodo xD
LOL
He was feeling xtra sassy.
Nazghul are freaking awesome. So scary
This was such a chilling scene with the soundtrack no less
best movies ever made, no question
Peter Jackson lost something, because this was fkn brilliant
peter jackson planned this movie for ten years, the hobbit was literally a last second on the spot thing since there was another director in charge of it but it was dropped so peter picked up the pieces, also the books had completely different tones as well, the hobbit was clearly ment for kids while lotr was more for adults
Wonders spot on
Wonders THANK you!!
Someone else who understands why the Hobbits were subpar!
I feel so bad for Peter. :(
Lotr production started in 1996
Apparently in the original novel it wasn't the Ringwraiths that attacked the inn but merely servants of them they had in the town. However this is one of the few changes from the book that I actually find to be an improvement. It shows the relentless nature of which the Nazgul will go to to reclaim their master's ring and care little to nothing for what they need to require it. Plus it's a hundred times more freighting seeing black hooded spectres hovering over the sleeping peaceful Hobbits ready to murder them as they sleep.
Imagine if they picked Denzel Washington to play Aragorn
Denzel meeting Sauron be like : " King Kong ain't got shit on me !!"
Virgo’s first day on set after only a short time to prepare for the role of a lifetime…at least up to that point.
Wow -- very seamless editing. Great job, Medivh!
Niceeeeeeeeeeeeee
every scene is perfection
Am I the only one that senses the first LOTR film, had a kind of horror vibe to it? to me there were certain parts combined with soundtracks that had me kind of nervous(like you are seeing a horror film). The Nazguls f.eks is WAY more scary in the first one, then 2 and 3(with this and weathertop) Gollum was pictured dark and shadowlike. Moria with skeletons all over the place and with the Balrog and the first look at Lurtz when he was duck up etc. To me, The first one is way more scary then 2 and 3 who were more action focused. Don't get me wrong! all three of them are masterpieces! but I like the first just a little more because of that horror vibe I got from it(and still do):)
Yes you right but third film had scary element too in Smeagol transformation
Strider, Ranger of Bree
Aragorn, King of Gondor
I remember reading this in the book. It's pretty similar.
Frodo "What are they?"
Aragorn "The IRS."
Que quiere decir eso
Nigga brought a candlestick lol
I never noticed aragorns bow pushes the camera
When?
If only another of the Dunedain had found Frodo.
When these movies came out, I was a kid and thought they were for nerds but 3 years after the return of the king, I got the movie set and started watching. I can't believe I was so late to witness the epic ness of the lord of the rings
Yeah gotta love Rangers. Where there really any in reality
Dont the town have a militia or something that can fend off the Nazgul?
1:33 THEY BE CLIMBING IN YA WINDOWS
Aragorn's...not from Bree. "Aragorn of Bree" has never been one of his titles, and Aragorn has a buttload of names and titles.
Ikr. Maybe the better title of this scene is Aragon *in Bree
For those also familiar to Korean actors, Viggo heavily reminds me of Won Bin. Extremely iconic actors who rarely take on acting roles.
GoT could have told Aragon that a longsword is a poor weapon at such close quarters. My money here is on the hobbit mob with assorted domestic implements.
1:34 i forgot that happened...
Aragorn is such a great character. If Frodo is the everyman, Aragorn is the fully realized hero. He is strong, brave, ready to lead, willing to listen to his peers and to acknowledge criticism. We should be grateful to Tolkien for writing this amazing character and to Viggo for playing him to the best of his ability.
I’d say that Viggo played the character to *perfection!* No more, and no less.
and all the more greatful that that loser Nicholas Cage didn't get to play him.
Actually this Aragorn is very different to the Tolkien's one. Personally I like it better

@@SilentDanDisney
Frodo didn't choose to put the Ring on; it was the other way around. Sauron took advantage of the Ring being in the air to draw the Nazguls to it by having it land on Frodo's finger.
After reading The Silmarillion I can totally understand Aragorn's reply being "Not nearly frightened enough,"
Coral Roper how did he know where Frodo was? Or even how did he know that they were going into Bree?
@@Galaxy_Alex2023 as aragorn is a ranger and a friend of gandalf, he was told by gandalf to guard the shire and outskirts of Bree with the other dunadans/ rangers. he was also told to specifically look for frodo by gandalf while the wizard was himself away on a mission. this isn't shown clearly in the movies as to how aragorn happened to be in the prancing pony at the same time as frodo but the books make it clear that aragorn was a friend of gandalf and was looking for frodo.
The fact that aragorn schools them about the wraiths WHILE THEY'RE RIGHT OUTSIDE THE WINDOW always looks badass
Yeah like he doesn’t fear them Badass
He acknowledge that they are things to fear and he never forgets it.
I have that entire monologue memorized.
I've always admired Viggo Mortensen's work, but this here, this my friends, he hit a home run never to be beaten. Major respect.
all 3 of the central protagonists gave historic performances. In all likelihood, Elijah, Viggo, and Ian will be the definitive portrayals of Frodo, Aragorn, and Gandalf.
I feel like Viggo Mortensen never gets enough credit as an actor. He was great as Aragorn, and A History of Violence was also amazing. Understandably he'll always be recognized as Aragorn, but the man is a heck of a talent.
@@pietrpiepir6444 Elijah was perfect for Frodo

scuzzlebutt That is why I wanna have one of these old-fashioned coats. To act like people in films.
The movies went ultra low-magic for some reason (even lower magic than Tolkien did), but the rangers, due to their Numenorean ancestry, do have the magical ability to avoid being detected unless someone is specifically trying to find them.

Not a single fantasy movie has even come close to the greatness of this trilogy. Even The Hobbit was piss in comparison. Wish i could experience the movies like the first time i saw them in the cinema. Damn they're good!
+Gandalf Greyhame Honest Trailers lol?
+Oliver Adam Even the Hobbit? *Especially** the Hobbit! I'll never forget the Unexpected Disappointment, the Desolation of Tolkien and the Battle of the CGI
Yeah, it's probably close to as good as it gets. Tolkien's universe is unmatched, and Peter Jackson was perfect for this trilogy. But, like with Lucas after ending the star wars trilogy, he never managed to do as well again. Although, I guess, Lucas did a really good job with the Indiana Jones trilogy afterwards.

@G E T R E K T Tbh though, he probably hasn't bathed in a while and probably smells like weed/tobacco. He'd probably smell like ass.
I feel like that was just Aragorn's way of politely letting the hobbits know that there's no point in trying to have a secret conversation around him, since his hearing is so acute that he can hear every word they're saying.

I think it's kind of fascinating that orcs used to be elves and the ringwraiths used to be humans. Just imagine what they must have gone through to end up like that...
It's actually debated whether or not Orcs were once elves. Tolkien himself had actually wanted that piece of information taken out, yet his son Christopher had it included. The consensus amongst Tolkien historians was that Orcs were just twisted parodies of the elves created by Melkor; Melkor then spread the idea that they were once elves to drive fear into his enemies at the time.
TheThoughtAssassin
its stated that only illuvatar has been able to create life ?
Bernd Horn He's the only one able to create life with free-will, such as the elves and men. The orcs don't have free will, though. All they know how to do is destroy and make warfare; they're unable to create or grow or break free of their chains.
TheThoughtAssassin
no no no. They have a free will and have their own leaders like the ones from the misty mountains which battled the dwarves for centuries (azog, or the leader of the pack in moria in lord of the rings 1, the book) they are even loyal to him. and they even build up own societies and cities, its stated they took a capital in the misty mountains which ones belonged to the dwarves, which induced this special hate between orcs and dwarves, and cause they live both in holes. They have a free will but are easy to manipulated. but so are the humans. They also fought for sauron. So either melkor could create life with free will, or he just changed the elves which seems more realistic. He later on even mixed them with humans to get some uruks, so who knows
They weren't even close to the wisdom of elves and men. Tolkien's definition of "free will" didn't necessarily mean the ability make simple choices, but the ability to be free of a master or controller. The Goblins were always subservient to either Melkor or Sauron, and their "cities" were crudely constructed slums. They couldn't create art or literature; they couldn't love or feel "human" emotions like the elves, dwarves, and men can. Here's a quote on the matter:
"According to the oldest "theory" proposed by J.R.R. Tolkien (found in The Fall of Gondolin, from The Book of Lost Tales, circa 1917 - the first tale of Middle-earth to be written in full), Orcs were made of slime through the sorcery of Morgoth: "bred from the heats and slimes of the earth".[29] However, it is consistently stated in Tolkien's other writings, with regard to his creation myth, that only Eru Ilúvatar (God) can create new life from nothing. Therefore, by whatever means the orcs came into being, it is certain that either they were "descended" from other beings or a deliberate manifestation of Ilúvatar's thought."
It's the idea that Morgoth created a twisted parody of the elves, but completely lacking what made them beautiful and wise. I'm not saying that they absolutely didn't come from corrupted elves, but that this "theory" is the most prevailing school of thought.
I like how Aragorn, when he grabs Frodo, he somewhat looks like one of the Nazgul, with that black hood, and then when Frodo asks him "what are they", he turns his head, with the scream in the distance, that also looks like it's coming from within, suggesting that he has some inner demons, maybe that he's struggling not to become one of these damned kings. Later he becomes real king. Epic stuff.
2:52
F: "What are they?"
:A turns his head, with dramatic look on his face, the scream of Nazgul is heard:
A: "Fly you fools!"
Flibbertigibbet6 Hit the nail on the head.
I’d do the same thing.
Better to be in exile then near a temptation that could destroy you especially with the amount of power the ring has once it has its grip on you.
His inner struggle was to not be like his distant relative Isildur, but that's still an interesting parallel
@@DoctorXander ancestor would be a more accurate term

Pippin was quite intelligent in the book too and something about his dialogue always made me imagine him as a rather "posh" sounding hobbit like Frodo. The actor is great and I've got no problem with the accent but they wrote him to be the clown of the group for some reason.
Kyle Whitehead i think that was a great choice
I wonder if Sauron often chewed the Nazgul's asses for letting the Ring slip through their fingers so many times.
Aragorn Stellar they’re basically spirits that simply can’t move on to the afterlife. Not sure if Sauron can do much harm to them. They already have to suffer being tied to the ring for eternity... or at least as long as the ring still exists. Seems like torture enough to me.
Well it was Sauron's fault, he didn't want to pay all the overtime for a 24-hour search and the Wraith Union rules set strict limits on haunting and terrorizing during daylight hours.
Actually they’re all being.... misled. Those old kings were kinda retarded, being so easy to manipulate. Even Sauron is lied to. Long story
it's unbelievable how much story telling they achieve in this 4 minute sequence. This film making is just perfect.
All that is gold does not glitter

No matter how many times I watch it it still gives me chills, I wish it were a second or two longer though
why that part in particular ?
Alex Finch The way the innkeeper reacts, as the swords glide by... It brings across the futility of fighting these beings. Your only hope is to hide and pray they don't notice you.
Poor Mister Butterbur. Had to hide in his own inn as the Nazgul ransacked the place. While he didn't get much recognition in the movie, in the book he did a lot to help Frodo and his friends.
porpus99 And because of his stupidity Frodo got stabbed by a Morgul Blade. If he had managed to deliver Gandalf's letter, Frodo would have left before the Nazgul got the order to hunt him, so everything would have been fine. Butterbur was one of the guys who made everything worse.
Keylorie He’s a busy man, and he did tried to send that message, but theres no one willing to take it to the Shire. Also, unlike in the movie, he actually stood guard as best as he could against the Nazgul(who instead of entering the inn openly burst through the windows of Frodo’s rooms), and continue helping the Hobbits even if that means defying Mordor.
I prefer Aragorn as the mysterious stranger Strider
