I agree - love that they show Saruman so deeply affecting from his communing with Sauron - it really shows just how corrupted and terrible Sauron's spirit has become, how immersed in darkness and twisted with malice and power that even a fellow maia, a corrupted maia, one of his own order no less, is so shaken by the experience. Like Tolkien himself says, Sauron is a order of magnitude greater and more malevolent than even Saruman; Sauron and Morgoth are SATANICALLY evil, they stand above all other in sheer malice.

I like the way Tolkien portrays his primary villains, Morgoth and Sauron, as more fearsome because of what you don't see than what you do. They are both mostly offscreen, and their power derives from their ability to put forth their will and their presence. Sauron only truly becomes dangerous to Frodo once he sets his mind on him, and then Frodo isn't safe even in the Shire. Similarly, Morgoth hardly ever leaves Angband but he relentlessly searches for his enemies in his thought.

probably too horrible for mortal man, and lesser elves to handle. i mean.. You need to reread the Silmarillion. Around the time Melkor started getting called Morgoth, he lost his ability to change shape, becoming locked in his dark-lord form.
Sauron was able to change shape pretty much forever; he showed up in a fair, elflike guise, calling himself Annatar to convince the elves to help him forge the Rings of Power.

Power-wise, Sauron was a mere slug compared to Melkor/Morgoth. However, power isn't everything, Morgoth was exceedingly arrogant and proud, believed himself to be the tits, he sunk so much of his own power into the world itself that he was diminished enough to be imprisoned in the void by the other Valar. Sauron, while nowhere near as powerful, was cunning, deceitful and treacherous. He used his talents of deception, schmoozed his way in by giving the rings of power as gifts, and gained power that way.

I know Tolkien hated allegory, and I'm sure I won't make many friends saying so, but sometimes I think Saruman is the essence of human law, with a voice that compels people to act against their own natures. Having essentially given in, at least partially, to the Dark Powers and discordance associated with Sauron/Morgoths line of thinking, it's sort of an allegorical take on where human law took itself. Even after being deposed, it attempts to reimpose itself upon a shire full of insular peoples who'd rather be left to their own devices, and finally becomes a shadow of its former self, forever wandering the world it once sought to dominate.
Human law is so full of bizarre compunctions, and ever seems to evolve and re evolve into the idea of might equalling right. It finally touches its darkest origins, (the all seeing eye) and winds up in ruin, itself, in so doing.
Looking at the world, today, I now understand why this story, and C.S. Lewis' books resonate so much with abrahamic faiths and interpretations of evil having its moment, if only long enough to have it taken away in the blinking, (or blinding) of an eye.
Today, in the kingdom of the blind, the one eyed are kings.
In Christian, Islamic, and possibly Judaic terms, Powers and Principalities being that which people struggle with, every day, in addition to the dark whispers behind it all which betray a spiritual warfare. Tolkien's world gives faces and names to forces. Lewis's much the same, but with the central theme of self sacrifice being the deepest of magic.

At his peak sauron was more powerful than melkor because melkor spread his essence/evil throughout the land/world, weakening him severely, so peak sauron would likely defeat the version of melkor that was defeated/chainedby the valar, since he had weakened himself so much by empowering so many evil servants(sauron one of them, being his lieutenant), + balrogs, demons, dragons, etc. This has been discussed many times.

    • @CosmicTeapot

***** 20 years ago? Star wars came out in 1977, that's 39 years ago. Also, don't compare the SW movies with the LotR books. Most fans of LotR are fans of the movies, they haven't even read the books and the books weren't an immediate success anyways. It took years for the fanbase to reach what it is now, and it would have never grown without the Peter Jackson movies while with Star Wars... well look at photos of the line-ups in the Chinese Theater in 1977! Nevertheless, it doesn't even matter since people of all ages and kinds are fans of both so don't be ignorant. Just because you personally don't like Star Wars for some reason doesn't mean that it's any less important in the fantasy universe. You can't just shit over someone for making a SW reference in a LotR video, that's just brainless hating.

    • @Lost7one
      @Lost7one 8 років тому +1

Son Of Montreal tbh the star wars movies are particularly bad, if you sit down and start to pick apart the old trilogy and the dreadful actors within you will find that the movies are in fact horrible. Sure we all liked them when we where 12 years old. The LOTR trilogy on the other hand was golden, not anything like the shitty hobbit series. Both universes are wonderful though and you make superb material with them if made correctly.

Orc: The trees are strong my lord, their roots go deep
    Saruman: Rip them all down
Orc: *Yeah alright, look, what I'm saying is we're trying, but it's not really that easy. We've got Orcs working 6+ hours overtime a day, hauling down trees with nothing but fucking ropes, with nothing but maggots and mouldy bread to eat. I thought, maybe, since you're meant to be so fucking wise, you could come up with some sort of solution. There are trees here with roots like 50 metres long, those ones are borderline impossible to pull down by hand. You're supposed to be managing this project but you've given us no time frame, no extra equipment and no budget to even come up with something ourselves, yet you expect everything to just happen. Frankly I think Sauron bet on the wrong horse, you think just 'cause you're like a Demi-God you're somehow automatically qualified to supervise a forestry project but you've obviously got no fucking clue what you're doing.*

Very true. Sauron has an outstanding ability to manipulate and corrupt the Children of Iluvatar, but probably not so much another Maiar, such as Saruman. Saruman corrupted himself by coveting the power of the One, and Sauron, who probably knew of Saruman's actual intentions, used this desire for power to his own ends.

I didn't get the impression in the movie that Saruman had sworn fealty to Sauron. I thought the movie captured the downfall of Saruman's role as an Istari as well as any adaption could. In the books, which had more detail, I got the impression that Sauron wanted to ensnare Saruman into believing that he could attain and control the Ring of Power, and that using him in his own quest could only benefit his plans to conquer all of Middle-Earth.
My question outside of the entire story is why did Sauron believe that if he had gotten the Ring back that the Valar wouldn't come back for another War of Wrath like they did in the First Age.

***** Interesting perspective, but I never got that out of Tolkien's description of the Valar's intentions AFTER the downfall of Numenor and the sending of the Istari in the 3rd Age. When Gandalf was sent back after defeating the Balrog that alone an be interpreted as an act of providence since it was an act committed by Eru himself. Even he didnt' get THAT involved in The War of Wrath. Perhaps it was the wisdom of Manwe that foresaw Sauron as actually too weak and misguided to actually pull off regaining the Ring and taking over, and that wisdom was handed down to Gandalf who somehow knew that Hobbits would factor greatly into Sauron's undoing.

J London The movie cannot be considered canon in any way. Besides, Saruman hoped to secure the ring for himself and not for Sauron. Being a Maia like Sauron, Saruman could have used all of the powers of the one ring.

This is one of the best scenes.
First, the visuals on the palatinìr is incredibly subtle and deep. The tiny clouds are a symbol of the clouded visions one sees when using it. It is not entirely clear that what you see is true.
Secondly, Sauron orders an army. You hear the voice of Sauron, almost elf-like, tall and noble, yet cruel and menacing.
Thirdly, It cuts to Saruman sitting in deep thought, seemingly troubling thoughts based on his expression. He is seeking something, far back in the wide ranges of his knowledge. Or he is conjuring some new devilry. What is he thinking about? It gives us an idea of what Saruman does on a regular basis. Maybe he meditates, seeks knowledge from the depth of his long life?
    Spectacular scene!

Sauron does use his power and persuasive voice to seduce Saruman and send Denethor insane through the Palatinir though. +Hamish Mackay I don't really think Sauron persuaded Saruman, him being the mightiest of the Istari, a loremaster, specially interested in the rings of power, he was so obsessed with the ring that knew everything about it and he even read Isildur's secret scroll before Gandalf did in the library of Minas Tirith, he was also jealous of Gandalf's ring, he has always been one step ahead of everybody, he sees an opportunity for power not for peace, but in the hobbit it was thanks to Saruman that Dol Goldur was destroyed and that Sauron the necromancer was defeated and vanished, but after all that time Saruman has kept a close eye on Sauron and he suddenly realized that he had grown so powerful that it was time to choose sides, ally with the free folk or with Sauron, Saruman clearly joined the stronger side with Sauron but at the same time a chance for him to become an independent lord of the rings, being Sauron's puppet was only the beginning of a large plan of his to become ring master as Saruman didn't want to destroy the ring, he sought more knowledge of it and became obessed to own it, his lust for power was too great, he sought to use Sauron to his advantage, who knows for how long Saruman has been in contact with Sauron my guess is since the hobbit and the destruction of Dol Goldur, and finally in the fellowship of the ring he decides that he wants to join him. He asked Gandalf if he wanted to join his cause but as Gandalf wisely replied: There can only be one Lord of the Rings, and he does not share power. So in the end even if someone sides with Saruman or someone sides with Sauron, there can only be one lord and not two as that is purpose of the one ring. Sauron also wanted someone to deal with Rohan while he can focus primarily on Gondor alone with his eastern and southern allies.

It's very impressive that Sauron was able to rattle Curumo or Curunir (Saruman), a fellow Maia who, like Sauron originally before he was swayed by Melkor (who is akin to Lucifer in Tolkien's Legendarium) to serve under him, served Aulë, the Smith of the Valar before departing for Middle-earth as one of the Istari. Though to be fair, Curumo, and by extension, the other four Istari had much of their power suppressed in their incarnated old man forms, and were even stated in Unfinished Tales to be 'mighty peers of Sauron' in what I suppose is their unsuppressed true Maiar forms. If Sauron could do that to a fellow Maia, even if said Maia wasn't at full power, then I'm very intrigued in what Sauron's master, Melkor, could do to someone with just his voice alone. After all, Melkor is a Vala, and obviously a Vala is several orders of magnitude above a Maia. And especially so in Melkor's case, since he was explicitly stated numerous times in just the Ainulindalë alone, which is the beginning chapter of the Silmarillion, to be the greatest of the Valar in his prime.

You've got to admire how much effort they put into making those orcs. The special effects, costume, etc pros, I mean. Every orc and goblin completely unique from the others in every detail. I do have some complaints about these movies and even the books but honestly I just can't see the books ever getting made into live-action films better than these. It also makes me wonder if there'll be a Silmarillion movie. They already deviated from the books somewhat with the films for LOTR and a lot for The Hobbit, so even if the Silmarillion was incomplete before James Tolkien died (IIRC it was) then the scriptwriters could still make up the rest for sure.

    • @kamion53

the Silmarillion is pretty interesting as background story and legend that is known to chaps like Elrond or Aragorn, but ineffect it is a pretty boring and depressing reading. Also the style of writing is not a live and vivid as LotR or Hobbit, but rather stiff. When y're a geek who want's to know every detail of the Tolkien world it is a must, but it is never a bedtime story.
besides the heirs of the Tolkien ouvre did not sell any filmrights other then Lotr and Hobbit.
so Jackson could not even mention the names of the other two Wizards and had Gandalf say that he had forgotten their names.

Sauron is so much more of a presence in The Fellowship of the Ring, mainly because of how much he speaks and how terrifying his voice is in comparison to the few times we hear it in the next two films. In those films, he's almost an after thought. There's mainly just a shot of the Eye every now and then, which isn't nearly as intimidating and doesn't really convey his presence and his will. I can only think of one moment that recalls his voice in the first film, and that's when he speaks as Pippin falls to the ground when he's looking in the Palantir.

Sauron’s portrayal is absolutely perfect in this scene. You don’t even see him yet he’s very present in this scene, not to mention his voice. His voice sounds lordly, imposing, and incredibly potent, all without being too over the top. It’s enough to leave even a powerful wizard trembling in fear. This is just the perfect portrayal of the dark lord and really highlights why Sauron is one of the all time great villains. Sadly the Hobbit movies missed the mark and Benedict Cumberbatch, although he was great as Smaug, portrayed Sauron as being too over the top which completely goes against what made him so threatening in the original trilogy

In the Hobbit trilogy he sounds like a dictator who learnt some black magic, in the Lord of the rings Sauron is very intimidating, even without his physical form which is not even 1/4 of his full power, he's scarier than fuck
