I do knitting, cross stitch, sewing, quilting, felt and wool work, rug hooking, etc. ….so trust me, I get it. It’s always fun to try a new hobby…but God knows …I don’t NEED another hobby…but that won’t stop me !

I've been waiting to buy a rigid heddle table loom for YEARS. I think it would be a great way to get rid of old stash and just another way to make stuff. Woven placemats & table runners would make awesome gifts too!

Yes 🙌 buy a loom, I did last Christmas and haven’t regretted my purchase. It took me a while to set it up and get confident. It’s a great way to use all that beautiful yarn we all have. So enjoying your vlogmas . Thank you for sharing ❤

My mom (who taught me to knit and crochet) decided one day to build herself a loom and made all sorts of placemats and linens! Do it and enjoy figuring out something new! Once my toddler starts school, I think I’m going to dabble into spinning and candle making 😊

You should totally start weaving. If any hobby falls under the umbrella of the 'fibre arts' go for it! I have knit and spun yarn for ages, but this year I've picked up both crochet and dyeing yarn/fibre.

I totally understand how you want to make all the things and do all the crafts .. i've been there and have done that and have also bought the loom (actually a 4 shaft table loom), this was after taking an intro to weaving course with my local guild (at the time it was a $30 course over 2 saturdays). Anyway, i found it was a great way to test the waters on this new craft because as you mentioned, it is an investment with equipment. For me, it definitely stuck and now 10 years later, i have 2 looms, and run a part time/retirement business weaving shawls, scarves, baby blankets, towels, table linens etc. etc. There's always something new to learn and new to make, which really is great!

I just bought an Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom (Knitter's Loom) for myself for Christmas - it has been an idea in my head for several years and I finally took the plunge a couple of weeks ago. It will be under the Xmas tree for me and I plan to jump into it during time off between Xmas and New Year. Enjoying your vlogmas from New Zealand 🇳🇿 ❤

Hi Sandy. Love that you're about to open a door to new adventures. Never would have guessed your age. I'm 64, and none of the things you mentioned keep me from my passions. I just think " Oh, well" and keep moving. My 50s were (at the time) my best decade ever: teenage enthusiasm mixed with worldly wiles

Yes Sandy, subtle differences in energy levels as we get older … exciting times figuring out a new hobby. Is there any way you can “try before you buy” ? Either way, the heart wants, what the ❤ wants! Good luck 🎄🎄

I say go for it. I just looked up the price of the looms…not a pittance, but not the price of a fridge ; ) And it doesn’t need the space of a floor loom. I was watching the UA-cam channel “Mrs Wallgren Makes” (her latest episode…go to minute 4:14) and her table loom was hanging from the wall, waiting for her with the current project. (It actually looked like a lovely piece of art there, and wouldn’t be forgotten at the back of a storage closet.) The worst that can happen is you don’t love weaving and you sell the loom. But it could be a lovely SUMMER craft, too…sitting out under the umbrella with some iced tea…so portable, and no hot sweater WIP on your lap. PS I’m sure your husband has loads of tools (big expensive ones) that he doesn’t pull out every weekend. And yet if he’s anything like my guy, he pours over the Cdn Tire flyer when it comes and shoots out to the store for those 60% off table saw accessories. And he would say, “Go for it…get a loom!”

I also took a class at my LYS this past summer. I enjoyed it and finished a scarf but I decided it was not for me. I love making and quilt, knit, crochet, punch needle work, rug hooking, etc and I don’t have enough time for those things! Maybe when I retire🤞🏻

You certainly should get a loom if you want one. That said I will share my story. I took a class and got, excited about weaving. I bought a nice rigid heddle loom and the warping ended up being something that I had inertia around. Loom sat in the corner and ultimately sold it. Don’t want to discourage- just my experience- loving your vlogmas.

I took at class at my LYS on the Ashford Rigid Heddle loom (made a scarf). Loved every moment. I have not decided on the 24 or 32”. I too have a huge yarn stash and always loved the look of a weaved product. I told myself no more tools until I make room for it. Depending on the length of the desired fabric, warping would require space that I still need the figure out in my crafting room. I felt a renewed sense of calmness while weaving. Ivana from the.republic.of.me makes beautiful pieces.

I have used a Nilus , 4 harness…got a rigid heddle and realized that I prefer to operate my loom my with feet. But I do see some weavers to create beautiful things with the rigid heddle… and if your don’t like it, they sell very fast… In my case, my RHL will be traveling to Chile to find its new home at my daughter’s who cant wait to weave….

Unsolicited hobby thoughts - Maybe start to identify (in real time) where in the week you would see yourself doing the weaving. So when do you say “Now is a good time to weave”, and actually have the time and desire to go do it? You might want to do it, but find you’ve got errands or family or work that interferes and that is more evident in this dress rehearsal 😊. Secondly, a big feature of this craft is that it’s stationary. So you have to be okay with not being with your family or carrying it around. I struggle to sew sometimes because it requires me to be away from my husband when we want to hang out (so then I do my portable hobbies). I 100% support new hobbies, these are just factors that would impact my own decision.

hey sandy, i've gone down all the hobby rabbit holes myself... currently my ashford rigid heddle loom is sitting in my studio, and since i'm in Toronto, i'm more than happy to lend it to you, just so you can decide if it's something you want to invest in. i've made table runners, pillow covers, and i can just imagine the gorgeous bags you could make with the fabric you weave up. it really is fun, but a bit of a learning curve. i'm serious about the offer...

Grrrr. Darn you! Now I’M looking up “rigid heddle looms”, learning the lingo, looking for courses (near me or online). Agggghhhhh😱. My main criteria are “Do I have a use for the items I can make?” “Do I have room for this?” “Is there going to be a huge learning curve?” “Will my future 90 year old self wag her finger and say ‘You should have tried it!’?” Yes-Yes-No-Yes. Once again, I say “Darn you!” PS I’ve been learning a lot on Kelly Casanova’s site, plus she has online video courses, which is good for me since I live at least 1.5 hours from any in person courses.

I knew your secret but didn't comment when you showed so much love for the woven scarf you received as a gift. If I might be so bold, before you purchase your materials perhaps find a weaving guild in your area and drop in for "play time". Our local historical museum has one, as do two of our universities who teach fibre arts. I know you're very talented but perhaps some primary resources would give you confidence to move forward with advice, help, classes, etc. Just a thought. I'm loving your vlogmases and will need to binge watch episodes.

I lit-tra-lee squealed when you revealed your hobby interest was a rigid heddle loom! I took a weaving class this summer and was instantly smitten. Within two weeks I had acquired a 15" Cricket RHL and a 30" RHL Flip (both Schacht). As a knitter and spinner, and I love to gift hand-made things, weaving is so efficient, and I have found the process to be so soothing and satisfying. I can use up a lot of my stash and create handmade things more quickly than knitting. Everyone is getting scarves and dish towels for Christmas, haha! Also, I subscribe to the School of Sweet Georgia and have found their classes and resources to be invaluable.

Thank you for your videos! I love you Vlogmas and I look forward to watching it every year! Yes, it is age. For me, everything went downhill after 50 -- knees, hair, feet, balance, skin. At 60, you will be reminded again that you can't count on your youth to carry you through your normal routines, a bad diet, or sitting too long or too much. Aging is a natural process and not everyone gets to grow old, so it is something to be embraced IMHO. If you don't already have a functional exercise routine (cardio, strength, and balance), I suggest Paiha B's Weight Loss over 50 videos. Each free video is a between 17-24 minutes, so they are easy to fit into your day. Even if you don't need to lose weight, these videos are excellent -- I have been doing them for 2 years and I notice a major improvement in my body. Good luck!
