Right there with ya. My last run was so doused with sauce it needed a lifeboat. Made well, it ain't bad, but for all McDonald's standardization, it so rarely makes the cut. That said, now to grab a McRib before Farewell Tour XVII ends!
Seeing all of these prices of older restaurants just makes me realize how coins and change are basically not even used anymore. Back then, just handful of coins could get you a decent meal.

You didn't mention the MacCoin promotion for the 50th anniversary. McDonalds release a set of 5 coins (brass tokens), one for each decade of the sandwich's history. You got one every time you bought a Big Mac, and could redeem it for a big mac. But they're worth more in their original package than a Big Mac is today. I have my full set of 5, lol... Great video! You glossed over an important part of the story though...How was Delligatti allowed to sell a custom made sandwich to his customers, in the first place? McDonalds had super strict guidelines for franchisees to ensure the menu was consistent in all restaurants. Did he need approval from Ray Kroc before selling it to his customers? Surely he wasn't allowed to go rogue? Other franchisees would have done the same otherwise...
This is a more recent development than you think... Dutch mc donalds for quite some time sold pea soup and chicken legs... Some hold on to those original franchise agreements and sold weird things till the noughts
I worked at McDonalds for three weeks in 1980. Never made it past “bun warmer”. I found out I wasn’t that hungry. Taught me my work ethic - don’t let anyone exploit you.

What makes the Big Mac so good is the special sauce. So glad that you can just buy 'burger sauce' from the supermarket now which is exactly the same and make yourself an even better burger at home.
Ridiculous. Can't you make your own Big Mac sauce for a fraction of the price? There are hundreds of recipies for it on Internet. I found mine... and it's way better than McDonald's.
@@italianskygod111 How is it going to be a fraction of the price when you have to buy so many different ingredients? It might work out cheaper for overall volume but if you don't go through it that fast it just goes to waste.
You can order a double cheeseburger with only big mac sauce. (Junior Big Mac?) sometimes you must pay extra made that way Since they have to make it special, it actually comes out hot, no like the pre-made burgers. No longer “fast”food.
Strangely enough, I recently tried a Bic Mac for the first time in my life, and after removing the pickles it was a surprisingly good fast food burger.
Yanno, while I love pickles to death personally, I feel there should be a push to have unpickled cukes as an option. I feel like those are equally valid and if anything, crunchier for people who want a burger with more bite.

Was the MegaMac a global thing? I remember it being a special item in the 90’s but on local McDonalds kept on doing it after the promotion. I never knew if it was sold elsewhere.
During the mid-80s, McDonald's held a promotional contest based on the Big Mac song. When you made the appropriate purchase from McDonald's you could receive a 45 sized vinyl record that featured the Big Mac song being sung by a group of children. The contest was reliant on whether or not the kids singing the song could accurately complete the song. If they did not complete the song, your record was a loss. However, if you got the record of which the kids did correctly complete the song, then your record was a winner. (A large amount of money being the grand prize, if I remember right.)
HOL UP! At 1:23 the ad shows a "Take away price" thats a little lower then the other price? Did that used to be a thing? You paid less if you were taking it to go?
45 cents in 1967 was 3.44 in 2019 or 4.02 in 2022. Today, Big Macs are 4 dollars AFAIK so it's basically the same price as back then. BUT It's probably made more cost efficiently somehow and with shrinkflation.
Lol Big Mac is 5.19 for just a sandwich, location prices vary too, so it could be $2-3 more than that. McDonald's is no longer affordable compared to other fast food

He created the Big Mac to compete with the Big Boy burger sold at the other popular Pittsburgh area restaurant called Eat 'N Park. He also created the Egg McMuffin and the hot cakes and sausage breakfast item.

It's interesting that the special sauce recipe was changed in 2004. I believe that was the same year I ate a Big Mac and suffered from a horrible case of explosive diarrhea. I never ate another Big Mac since. I only go to McDonald's for their breakfasts.
The next time you're at McDonalds look at the price they charge for a Big Mac compared to a double cheeseburger. You'll be astounded how much more they charge for a different bun, lettuce and a different condiment. They are charging you dollars more for a sandwich that might not cost them any more to produce than a double cheeseburger.
I remember as a kid , the Big Mac was twice its size now , barely could bite into it without the burger falling apart. McDonald's also tasted so much better than now , the packaging and the interior were more attractive and made you crave any burger from McDonald's , nowadays its like entering a laboratory or a funeral home , miss the old McDonald's.
I dont know about others but the addition of shredded lettuce in the big mac helps balance it with the abundance of condiments/dressing and the juicy patties inside that burger

I have a Big Mac once a year, just to see if I like it or not. I'm usually underwhelmed. I prefer 5 guys or Culver's for takeout burgers, or homemade. Although to be fair the pickle/onion/sauce combo is pretty good.
Back in the day the Big Mac blew those burgers out of the water, now it's just plain average compared to other burgers.
That's my philosophy with White Castle. I eat there once a year to remind myself why I only eat there once per year...
Of course Five Guys and Culver's are better... they cost two to three times more than a Big Mac
You prefer 5 guys lol
Right there with ya. My last run was so doused with sauce it needed a lifeboat. Made well, it ain't bad, but for all McDonald's standardization, it so rarely makes the cut. That said, now to grab a McRib before Farewell Tour XVII ends!
Seeing all of these prices of older restaurants just makes me realize how coins and change are basically not even used anymore.
Back then, just handful of coins could get you a decent meal.
Whoever suggested The Aristocrat deserves a drubbing. 😂 I groaned as soon as I saw that!
I wish they would make Quarter Pounder Big Mac.
They do. Ask for a big Mac with qp pattied
This is the only Big Mac video that I have seen which acknowledges the Big Boy predecessor.
As an Australian, I can honestly say, I have never, In 30 years, and living in 4 Capital cities in Aus, Ever, Heard of the "Son of Mac" Let alone ate one.
Neither, maybe it was a short lived promo item?!
I don't think a single person could make a Big Mac look like as good as the ads
Still love Big Macs. It's always been the special sauce for me!
(Edit: Yeah, I ate a few Big Mac's to get the tokens. Not my favorite sandwich... 😁)
A few years ago Mc Donald's l ordered a big mac meal with bacon cost me $ 10.42 !! So from then on I go to the grocery store and buy 8 frozen beef patties thousand island shredded lettuce cheese pickles onion and sesame seed buns I get 8 single patty big macs for $20.00
Too bad the sauce isn't really thousand island
Kroger sells Special Burger 🍔 sauce 😋
They were recognisable because old franchisecontract holders hold on to ronald mc Donald and interiors way long than others..
I worked at McDonalds for three weeks in 1980. Never made it past “bun warmer”. I found out I wasn’t that hungry. Taught me my work ethic - don’t let anyone exploit you.
Fascinating video; please keep up the great work.
Must confess, I love me some Big Mac. Can’t justify the price or the wait
1988-1991 a McDonalds's employee. Learned tons. I loved working "Grill" because there was more action. This was pre-Mc'Griddle day. Love the Big Mac but as an employee I was a Sausage Biscuit and Nugget Guy. Service was fast, fresh & friendly.
My problem with the big mac is that the cheese should be on top of both patties, not just underneath the bottom one.
This man knows ^
i thought that too when i got trained not sure why they don't probably to save money.
When I was in grade school in WYO it was 80 miles to the closest McDonald’s and was a real treat. I could sing the song backwards and forwards.
Big Boy made the Big Mac first 🍔👀
And it was a superior burger. I really miss Bob's Big Boy.
These are really good sandwiches 🥪
What makes the Big Mac so good is the special sauce. So glad that you can just buy 'burger sauce' from the supermarket now which is exactly the same and make yourself an even better burger at home.
Ridiculous. Can't you make your own Big Mac sauce for a fraction of the price? There are hundreds of recipies for it on Internet. I found mine... and it's way better than McDonald's.
@@italianskygod111 How is it going to be a fraction of the price when you have to buy so many different ingredients? It might work out cheaper for overall volume but if you don't go through it that fast it just goes to waste.
It's just frisco sauce .. or Thousand Island dressing. So damn good!
You can order a double cheeseburger with only big mac sauce. (Junior Big Mac?) sometimes you must pay extra made that way Since they have to make it special, it actually comes out hot, no like the pre-made burgers. No longer “fast”food.
The Big Mac never had enough burger on it for me. It's all bun and lettuce.
I remember the days while I was in high school when the saying started, "Big Mac Attack".
Strangely enough, I recently tried a Bic Mac for the first time in my life, and after removing the pickles it was a surprisingly good fast food burger.
I can't understand why some people don't like pickles
@@sicknado I don't understand it either. I like cucumbers, but pickles just bother me, for some reason.
Yanno, while I love pickles to death personally, I feel there should be a push to have unpickled cukes as an option. I feel like those are equally valid and if anything, crunchier for people who want a burger with more bite.
Watching this 6 days before Christmas I love this one but 2 hours later my tummy hurts I don’t eat McDonald’s that often….. but then had it on Saturday….. December 19 2022
Was the MegaMac a global thing? I remember it being a special item in the 90’s but on local McDonalds kept on doing it after the promotion. I never knew if it was sold elsewhere.
Its a permanent menu item in New Zealand
During the mid-80s, McDonald's held a promotional contest based on the Big Mac song. When you made the appropriate purchase from McDonald's you could receive a 45 sized vinyl record that featured the Big Mac song being sung by a group of children. The contest was reliant on whether or not the kids singing the song could accurately complete the song. If they did not complete the song, your record was a loss. However, if you got the record of which the kids did correctly complete the song, then your record was a winner. (A large amount of money being the grand prize, if I remember right.)
Ive always been more of a quarter pounder guy, but I do enjoy that sauce.
HOL UP! At 1:23 the ad shows a "Take away price" thats a little lower then the other price? Did that used to be a thing? You paid less if you were taking it to go?
'Here you go Mr President' 'God bless Israel' I actually laughed at that one.
@@collinkeaton I guess it's cheaper in the Midwest where I am lol
And McDonalds swears the Big Mac has not shrunk an ounce in 50 years. 🤣
I would like a doc on taco stands/trucks. I love going to taco trucks and have all my life. I honestly think they are the most delicious thing for the price and need more recognition for feeding my part of America.
Talk about Taco Bell's the Chalupa!
🇺🇸
Since I remember the old commercial I never never a grocery list on big Mac night 😆

McDowell's likes the name the Big Mick, just not the sesame seeds.
Golden Arcs.
I LOVE your videos! You should do one of the McDonald's song and how the records were distributed in newspapers. I remember as a child, my father gave me the record from the newspaper he bought. Memories! ❤
Still my favorite hamburger by far. There's nothing like the original.
When I Worked at McDonald's from 1982-1984 I Really Loved the Big Mac! Now it is just two Small patties on Dry Buns!
They should change the name to little Mac- half the size of the original of what I got as a kid. ! - Clara had it right “where’s the beef”!
Loved the flashback to Gilbert!
He created the Big Mac to compete with the Big Boy burger sold at the other popular Pittsburgh area restaurant called Eat 'N Park. He also created the Egg McMuffin and the hot cakes and sausage breakfast item.
Eatnpark did have a double decker sandwich. However, the Bob's Big Boy was only at Bob's Big Boy restaurants.
The Big Mac with extra sauce is the best thing I've ever eaten...
A Big Mac Museum. No surprise there...we have a Spam Museum here in Minnesota.
Speaking of burgers...about that suggestion I made in the BBQ across the USA video you made earlier. Any chance of us getting a burger styles across the US video? (I left a couple of Minnesota burgers to get you started in that post.)
My friend went to the Spam MUSEUM LOL
I have a Spam museum too. It's a folder in my email.
I personally like the Whopper because BK has more veggies in it and less sauce - that helps keep the patties in the bun.
Crazy to see the Big Mac price go from $0.75 up to over $5 today and they didn't increase wages to match.
The big Mac is my favorite food to order at McDonald's. I also like their filet fish sandwich.
My go to is always the Big Tasty, prefer that sauce
I literally watched this whole video! 🔥💭😁 thanks for this video!
Unfortunately you can't get the son of mac in Australia any more, much to the sadness of my mum 😥😟
It's interesting that the special sauce recipe was changed in 2004. I believe that was the same year I ate a Big Mac and suffered from a horrible case of explosive diarrhea. I never ate another Big Mac since. I only go to McDonald's for their breakfasts.
Since you did the big Mac. We need a whopper episode now.
BIG boy was better than McDonald's
Steel workers couldn't figure out how to eat two burgers?
A+ video!
It's such an iconic hamburger, it's hard not to think about it.
One reason to not eat a big mac? My jaw doesn't open that wide. D=
Yeah, that's just nostalgia talking
To be fair you are twice as you were as a kid. So of course it shrunk.
I worked at McDonald's for eight years boy after the fourth year I had it with making big Mac's but still ate them 😋
It’s just a double cheeseburger with extra lettuce, a third bun, and Mac sauce.
Hamburger cheeseburger big Mac whopper
Which steel mill were you referring to? Very curious
I dont know about others but the addition of shredded lettuce in the big mac helps balance it with the abundance of condiments/dressing and the juicy patties inside that burger
