If you don’t mind me asking What branch is your husband in? I’m a disabled navy vet. Serves from 09 to 13. I won’t lie it can be tough for us when we get home even for those lucky few who where not in combat. My wife was really there for me when I came home. It can be tough but make sure if you guys need help with adjustment, use the many programs available to you guy’s. I wish you both the best of luck. Be sure to be there for each other even when times get tough.

One of my first memories was waking up when I was around five, panicking because I couldn’t remember my Father’s face. Just to brag a little, he was awarded the Air Force Cross because of his heroism. Later in life, one of my sons was run over/hit by a pick-up truck while crossing the road to catch a city bus to go to an alternative school. He was in a coma. He woke up on September 11, 2001. His first worry was his job, his second was his schoolwork (he was 18 years old). He had a bruised spleen, a goose egg on his forehead, and most severely, bleeding in the brain. He wanted to be a Marine. They wouldn’t take him,he tried the regular Army, they wouldn’t take him. The Army National Guard accepted him, he served in Afghanistan just like his little brother in the regular Army. I am very fortunate that they both came home safe. (My oldest served in supposedly safe times though he was severely injured). I tied a yellow ribbon around our mesquite tree in our front lawn for my brother during Desert Storm. Okay, I admit I didn’t write this very well,I also admit I don’t really care.

this was great to see and hear your side of this the first thing I gotta say that actually made me laugh (not at you but a related thing) was when you said "i'm not gonna say I am sorry" it reminded me of a comment between one of my co workers and an active duty solider. it was memorial day and he noticed an active duty customer (in camo) and they said to him "happy memorial day" and the dead serious look on his face when he responded "why is it happy? and I am not dead" was priceless I loved the insight into this video knowing you served the only thing that was sad was how it ended so quickly I would of loved to heard more.

That story about the 4 men hit very hard for me because I got rejected due to a heart condition. And I'm from a military family and it shook me to my core because I felt like it was without a purpose because I grew up with that expectation. And even now it's something I wish I could do today but can't due to the same heart condition. I clearly didn't shoot myself, but I dragged myself through the mud for years afterwards.

Thanks for sharing your story with us OSN! These kinds of stories are important and telling them must be really hard. It was very deep and something that gives a lot to think about.
Military service and life here in Finland feels very different from all that. In here every man needs to do either Military Service or Civilian service between age of 18-26 and many women do volunteer for it too these days. And as our military is a Defense Force we are not allowed to have ''offensive'' things like Submarines or Bombers as per the peace treaty after WWII.
Huge respect for anyone who serves their country in this or any manner.

Not sure what anyone wins, but the original song was written by the lead singer Dexter Holland, and recorded by "The Offspring". It was released on their album "Ixnay on the Hombre". The song was written after Dester and his wife were at a Baskin Robbins when gang members opened fire. He thought about, "What if my wife had been killed? How would that feel?"
Also, when I served (2001-2008, I was in Basic Training when 9/11 happened) I was told that at one time there was a buddy system in the Army where you could join with friends and be kept together. Maybe that's why these guys are still together in their unit.

I have been out of the Army since 2015, and still get pissed about the way berets are worn in a lot of videos. I did a year on the funeral honors team for 82nd sustainment brigade when I was at Ft Bragg, so seeing the uniform misworn when dealing with the public or the flag being folded incorrectly makes me mad to no end

It took me a while to decide to comment on this. I'm one of the ones this song effects most, frankly it cuts to the bone, and I cry every time I hear it. 23 Sept 2004 15:00 I was in a Humvee that got hit with an EFPIED. The damned thing took my left arm off and riddled my body with shrapnel. I guess I was lucky I had decided to but my side plates in that day, as the side plates kept most of the nasty shit out of my chest cavity. But it also killed Sgt Gram who was driving and Pvt Lewis who was up on the duce. Both of whom were as close to me as my own blood, in no small part to our love of heavy metal. Why God decided to not take me that day, I'll never understand, nor do I think I'll ever forgive him for it either.
The thing that hits SOOO fucking hard is where he asks God if he could "trade"........... I would......... Then my God children would have their fathers, and the world would be a better place without me. One man with no children for 2 men with kids? YEAH I would make that trade, gladly! Without pause or hesitation.
SO many times, I've heard this song and thought about chomping on a bullet. But there are 2 reasons I won't, I Can't, no matter how much I scream in my head that I want to. First, my god kids. In loving memory of two men, I Loved as my brothers. I CAN NOT, WILL NOT fail their children. Second, I know Mark and Kyle would be terribly disappointed in me if I were ever so fucking weak as to do something that stupid. One day I'll see them again, be it Vahala or wherever we go after we pass, and I refuse to have them be disappointed in me...........

When you were talking about service member wearing two black bracelets of friends who died, it reminded me of MIA bracelets which were big deal on Nellis AFB (And I imagine most bases/posts) in 70s. I wanted to get one but I was working babysitting and didn’t have the cash and my mother thought they were depressing and wouldn’t advance me the money. Her attitude and mine regarding the military were miles apart. I am a proud Air Force Brat and proud Army computer programmer; I was in ‘78-‘82 active, +2 more inactive. So missed all the wars but had the joy of a) being female when most NCOs didn’t believe we were in it for a career, b) in an infantry division (7th) so our IBM 360/30 monster sized computer got taken to the field in 2 semi trucks and half dozen deuce &1/2 cargo trucks - shakes head at foolish non-computer officers - and rest of time we spent debugging tape and disc drums never meant for rough terrain. Oh, and on a post with a high instances of assault and rape. I missed that “fun” but I wore a buck knife openly in civvies (and we traveled in groups of other women, and trusted men when possible) but I know sisters who were attacked and then treated as dirt for reporting it. That made sure I didn’t career like my dad. 20/20 I would have waited the near year to get computers in Air Force. STILL I told men and women I knew it was a good alternative to college at least until the wars became a career in themselves.
Sorry for long post, I try to avoid those who see a female Vet in power chair and think I got that way in a war, or that I was in for 20…
oh btw glad you mentioned sacrifices of the families, so many forget when a soldier comes home with PTSD or missing limb(s) there is a wife, or husband, plus children who ALSO have to deal those wounds…

Then to say good bye to a whole Co. was more for me than I knew. Awaiting news was living in an insecure life while everyone you want to protect you is gone! Waiting for something that says your best friend @johnpajak and the rest of the MPCO. Are coming back! I thank God my kids weren't old enough and thank God we had so many enlisted enraged!

I am not an American. In any case, I am convinced that a soldier, willing to risk his/her life in defense of his/her country, deserves admiration and respect.
Having said that, it is quite amazing to see the legitimate humility with which you, sir, approach your own service, that enhances you as a human being, something that all military personnel are first and foremost: human beings.
So, since I am not in a position to thank you for your services, let me celebrate your humanity and that of all those who have served your country.

Something similar that happened to the Humvee happened to the Stryker that my dad was in, the styler ran over an IED but because the IED wasn’t set correctly it didn’t cause any major damage to anyone inside the Stryker, or the Stryker itself.

Just was introduced to your channel and I had to answer the question you asked earlier about where you were when 9/11 happened. I had just got done doing PT and was getting ready in the barracks for my day of work in the army. I had the news on and when I came back from my shower the first tower was already on tv hit and I watched the 2nd tower get hit. Almost 10 minutes after that, the alarms went off on post and I knew exactly what was going to happen next. I was stationed at Ft. Lewis the main intelligence unit for the army, which I was in. After the alarms went off we had to assemble in the quad and pretty much immediately were told to start getting our gear together. Within 2 months we were leaving WA state. It happened quick, alot of us were numb for awhile. Unfortunately because of my clearances there's not a whole lot I can share on here, but needless to say most of the soldiers who first went over never had any intention of fighting a war, or thought of it. That wasn't really why people signed up before 9/11, but we did our jobs regardless.

9/10/01, I was on Okinawa, drunk as fuck, waiting for a typhoon to pass over. Sometime around 3-ish in the morning, we were all woke up to let us know about the shit that went on. My buddies, knowing that I was originally intended to rotate back before the storm hit, had been post-poned. Meaning that there was a good chance that I'd go to combat. I thought that, being a POG radio tech who taught the MCMAP program, at the time.... I wasn't going to see combat. Even in '03, when I was a boot Corporal (42 months as just an E-3), I assumed that my rear-echelon ass was still gonna be chillin' w/ the gear in the rear. Then, I found out I was being TDY transferred to RCT-1. Shit got hot. Then it got hotter. And, while I remember the rough outfits and looks of the guys I shot, I don't remember their faces. But, those innocents... the people in the burned buses.... or, the kids we saw with newly missing limbs (if not just dead)..... *shrug* I'm sure there is much more that I could/should remember, but the TBI has, thankfully, blocked those parts.
You're right. This is something that I wish more people knew about, or even cared for....

Please let me say thank you for your service. I served in a artillery unit and was in for 20yrs. I’m going to comment on your second reaction to this video as you go through it and talk about it. For me… (when you stopped to talk about the guy who went through an IED and was still there walking around the seen) that happened. I was in Iraq in 2004 and 2 squads from my platoon were tasked to get fuel tankers from a depo and return them to our base. Mine (1st) and 2nd. With out making this a five hour story… the lead squad (2nd) got hit by an IED and my team was in the middl3 of the convoy and saw the explosion. My team leader told my to get up there as fast as I could. I was a combat lifesaver and knew I was needed to assist the medic that was traveling with the second squads middle hummer. Anyway that very seen happened. Almost to the tee. The IED hit the humvee and tore into it. The blast went over the squad leaders head and hit the driver. The gunner received shrapnel to his upper chest. The squad 2 leader was still at the humvee when I got there making sure there was a nine line out and a Medevac was on its way. This is the situation I came into when I got to the hummer.
We lost 4 in that deployment. I personally went through several IED’s and received 2 ph myself. The first was when I was the driver… and the second was when I had to replace our gunner cause he was sent home from the first IED hit. I guess I had a few things looking out for me cause I managed not to get seriously wounded. Just a lot of concussions and cuts and scrapes. I hated it for many years, cause I didn’t think it was fair I got to come home in “one piece” and others in my unit didn’t or didnt come home at all. I’ve gotten better about it over the years.

I was with the 24th MEU 30 miles off the coast of Italy on the USS Carter Hall when Sept 11 happened. It was actually funny. We were sitting in the lounge watching TV and playing cards when it happened. Someone kicked open the door and said we've been attacked, we've been attacked. We all just kinda looked at him like he was stupid. The Navy hadn't called general quarters the ship hadn't even shuttered. Then they said turn it to CNN. That's when we saw the second plane hit. We all dropped what we were doing and got up and started getting ready for war. We were lucky though. We had been gone nearly 7 months so the Corps sent us home.

As we are on the subject, I'd like to see if you'd mind doing a reaction video to an Australian song, written in the early 80s. The song is about a returning Vietnam vet, and how they were treated once they came home, we treated our Vietnam vets like scum when they returned. They weren't the 'heroes' of WW1 and WW2, but a tool of the US. They weren't even entitled to any campaign ribbons, or other military awards, till the late 90s/early 00s. They weren't recognised by the RSL (Returned Serviceman's League) or included in ANZAC Day marches. The song in question is Khe Sahn by Cold Chisel.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this already, I didn't read all the comments. But I'd like to add that a group of buddies can enlist at the same time, in the same MOS, go to the same basic training site at the same time, and serve in the same unit....if they are Army National Guard. Another guy and myself went to Ft Benning at the same time, in the same company, but different platoons. I also saw 3 dudes I went to basic training with (that were also National Guard. One from the same state, and two others from two different states) at the same training site and one overseas. I'm still in contact from a few guys I went to basic training with, and since I was Minnesota Army National Guard, most of the dudes I was deployed to Iraq with.

I have had someone in uniform come to the door, thank the Lord that they weren’t there to inform me of a death. It was very close. That teddy bear really hits home! We were scheduled to fly home, saw the news, and didn't understand why we weren't allowed to fly.
It made plenty of us mad since the only civilians were the flight crew.
Even more maddening was to learn that a plane full of Saudi Arabians was allowed to fly out of the country.
So a plane full of them was safer than a plane full of Marines?!?!?!
