Perfect timing Tati, I just polished my nails this evening! Great tips for protecting a manicure, I really enjoyed this vid and that CVS polish remover is the best I've ever used. This subject is really special to me because I can polish my own nails again after 11 years. In 2003 a doctor pierced my spinal cord during a cervical epidural, paralyzing my right hand/arm. Late 2014 there was movement in my right thumb, just enough strength to use my right hand again. The rest of my fingers are still paralyzed but my thumb is a good start. I'd forgotten that polishing may nails was so much fun! I also wanted to share this to let everyone know things can get better when bad stuff happens. I'd lost hope but this is something that has motivated me again. Also I've bought a bunch of nail polish in beautiful shades & textures!

First time poster, long time fan. Great tip about using lotion when wearing gloves...which led me to thinking - it might not be brutally frigid over on the West Coast, but it is over here in the North East/Mid-Atlantic. I wear gloves when I drive into work - great time to slather on the lotion before heading out...upon arrival, hands are soft and moisturized for the day ahead. My favorite nighttime hand treatment: True Blue Spa Super Softening Hand Lotion w/ Paraffin & Lush Lemony Flutter Hand Care and favorite day hand cream: True Blue Spa Fragrance Free Super Rich Hand Cream and Curel Ultra Healing Lotion. My absolute favorite nail strengthener is Salon Science Instant Artificials - I use one coat under every base coat. I have so many more favorites, too many to list here. Thanks so much for sharing these great tips Tati - you're the best.

I am a nail polish addict and have a few additional tips.
Avoid doing your nails within three hours of taking a shower. Your nails may feel dry to the touch but it takes much longer to be fully cured. I like to do my nails in the early evening when I know I won't be showering and also that I will have at least an hour and a half from the time the final top coat goes on and when I will go to bed. Otherwise you may wake up to find sheet imprinted nails.
Time time time- give the base coat, two thin layers of nail colour and then generous topcoat time to dry in between each application.
To prevent your tips being visible very quickly take your nail polish colour and top coat on the end of your tips and even a bit under if you can. Don't worry about smudging you can clean it up with a q-tip dipped in polish remover.
Always start your manicure with washed hands and nail beds. Wash your hands after using polish remover and filing as this makes a fine dust that can linger on the nail bed. You want an oil, dust and polish remover free nail to paint on.
Don't use your nails to scrap at labels etc and wearing gloves for chores is a big one too like Tati mentioned.
My favorite nail polish base right now is
Diamond Strength Hardener by Sally Hanson
    best top coat is
Complete Salon Manicure Ultra-Wear by Sally Hanson. For best results apply this to your nail colour after you have given it a 1/2 hr to set to the touch. Apply a generous coat and it does take a while to dry but is Sooooooo worth it. I like to let it dry for at least 1 hour.
    I have tried them all
    Nail Envy by OPI
Essie: No Chips ahead top coat and First base (base coat) *I really did not like these at all
Seche Vite dry fast top coat - has a great sheen and dries very fast (way faster than my current favorite Sally Hanson top coat) but it is not as durable and does not protect my manicure the way the Sally Hanson Complete salon manicure ultra-wear does
OPI -Chip Skip * this claims to help create a better cleaner base to start your manicure (it's not a base coat but an extra step before the base coat) I did not find that it helped at all. Simply starting with a clean nail is just fine.

Hey Tati!! Sally beauty has a pink vitamin e infused acetone that's super cheap that doesn't damage or dry out your fingers and cuticles and leave that white cast dryness on your fingers and nail beds. Smell is decent too and works amazingly. Try it out !! I've used nothing else since!

Josie Maran Bare Naked Wipes! They have revolutionized my hands! They take off even the most stubborn polish, (it gets kind of messy), but when you're done (and have cleaned off the oily polish excess left behind) you just rub the oils into your hands. It makes my hands and cuticles so soft! I will never use anything else again!

Ok my best tip & this is the ONLY thing you need for hard strong beautiful nails....Nailtiques formula 2!!! It can be found at any drugstore! It is the best most amazing nail product I have ever used!!! I have tried everything! This comes in 3 formulas but I use #2 for dry brittle peeling nails. Try it and you will be shocked!! I now have to cut my nails down because they don't break! 😊 Also anyone who gets upset stomach from vitamin like I do. Buy them in gummies. So much easier on stomach.

Definitely NailTiques #2!! It is the most amazing product! Also, use cuticle oil regularly. I use it about 3x day. One more thing, I often chip my nails when I do a lot of cooking. I bought a box of non latex medical gloves and wear those when I cook. They fit more tightly so I don't lose dexterity.

Hi Tati, I met Leighton Denny a couple of years ago and he said that using a hardening base coat for two long actually increases the chance of your nail breaking. Using hardener regularly causes the nail to become so hard that they will actually be more brittle because they will have no flexibility so will break when knocked :) Just a little tip :)

Tip from a cosmetologist :) use oils on your cuticles at night! They penetrate better over night than during the day. Olive, coconut, avocado are all good. Another tip which I'm guilty of not doing bc it's a pain in the ass but it was repeated over and over in my school textbook....always file in one direction instead of seesaw motions-that causes your nail to weaken. Great video love it!

I was looking up ways on how to prolong your manicure and prevent chipping (other than the obvious things such as base coat, buffing, filing, etc) and an interesting tip that I found was to apply a clear top coat everyday on top of the polish. It would make a great video if you experimented with this tip! I am hesitant to try it because I like my nails to always look perfect and it seems like applying a top coat everyday would make it more prone to peeling, but who knows! lol
    Thanks, Tati!

There is a nail polish remover I bought at Whole Foods, called Mineral Fusion, it has no acetone and it is the cheapest naturalish remover that I've found, I think it was 7.99(?) For a 6 fluid oz, but it works really good and it's not over 20 bucks like the brands at my local health food store! Oh btw, I keep forgetting to tell you (Tati) that they carry that Tom's fluoride free toothpaste (I use the same exact one) at my Trader Joe's, and it is more than one dollar cheaper, than other stores, if you shop there see if they have it.

You're hair looks more modern, I like it. I never have issues with my manicures, and I've been doing my own nails for six or seven year now. I always use a strengthening base coat, OPI, Essie, or Rimmel nail polish, and two top coats, one non chip, the other quick drying. I am one of the few people I know whose manicures last so long (weeks!) that I have to take off my polish and clip my nails because they've grown in so much.

I'm (almost) a year late here - but my tip is to switch to an almond/oval shape from a square shape. My nails don't tear at the sides any more since I've gone with a pointier shape, so I'm able to grow them much longer :) The polish also doesn't chip on the edges, so my at-home mani will actually last a full week without chipping, which has NEVER happened before.

Last summer I wrecked my nails completely, I was working at a beauty counter mainly selling opi and china glaze nail polishes (and essence makeup), and we were allowed to use the testers to paint our nails, and I ended up painting my nails and using nail polish remover every 2 or 3 days, also the opi nail polishes where on a tower where people could be constantly throwing them to the floor and we used acetone to clean the mess, long story short my nails havent been the same since those days, I will try with the vitamins because nothing else have worked for me

The best thing I've ever found to strengthen up my nails has been the Dior abricot nail fortifying creme. Its a lifesaver for nails!
Having worn nail polish almost non-stop for the past 10 years my nails were starting to really suffer the consequences and look shabby, not good! I now put the Dior nail cream on after taking polish off and try to leave at least 1 day before I reapply polish, just massaging in the cream a few times throughout that time.
My nails haven't looked this good in years thanks to this stuff, I can't recommend it highly enough - my mum now uses it and I'm always telling friends to go and invest because it is 100% worth it :)

Nail hardening polish is good as a base coat some times. Try alternating moisturising nail polish (yes they exist I have a polish with vitamin E). Think of a tree in the wind - nails need to be able to flex if they are to not break. I over used nail hardening polish (put it on whenever I did my nails) and it made my nails too hard, the horrible type of hard where they resemble dog claws, and they broke regularly.
Try this when you removed all the polish, use something like coconut oil and wear a tight waterproof glove, before things like a marigold/washing up gloves. It just keeps the oil closer to your nails and cuticles. It is very moisturising, without using all the other chemicals in nail creams. Concentrate the amount on your cuticles and nails rather than your hands, and do this AFTER the nail bump removal/smooth/shine or buff part and the cuticle push back and clipping (if you do that). This way the oil will sink into the bit that will remain and therefore is slightly rawer.
For the vitamin/supplement and health resolution, here is something that might help: Use a week long clear medication organiser and then you can see at a glance if you have taken the vitamins/supplements. Also, you can set an alarm on your phone. It is best if you take them at the same time each day so it becomes a habit. If you get a few of the week organisers and fill them up, and take them in a rotation. Yes, it takes a few minutes each week to refill, but you know in a week, two, or few that you will run out of them and need more.
ANOTHER NAIL TIP: If you are going to do a messy or dirty job (gardening, scrubbing a shower etc), make sure your nails are clean and nothing is underneath them, then get a bar of soap that your skin can tolerate. Drag all your nails over the bar of soap several times until the soap is wedged underneath well. Then go and do the job. When washing your hands afterwards (moisturising soap is good for this, some have nail health stuff added too!) the soap under your nails will dissolve and the messy stuff will be washed out as well.

I've always sworn off fake nail anything b/c of the long term damage, then gel came & then I decided I wanted length so I crossed into acrylic, that was a mistake. Six months of acrylic nails later & my already dry & brittle nails were ruined. I went to the google for help and landed on Nail Tek. It 100% repaired my nails & now they are growing again, not breaking, & they are perfect. They have tons of formulas. Sold at Sally's & Ulta. Its great stuff.

Vitri is the best nail strengthener out there! Theres only one pharmacy in canada where i can find, jean coutu, but im sure you can buy on the internet. After trying a bunch of bases, i can truly say that i see the best results with Vitri 👍

Best base coat : Sally Hanson Diamond Strength Hardener
Best Top Coat: Sally Hanson Complete Salon manicure Ultra -Wear
I have tried Essie, OPI, seche Vite, revlon, and the two mentioned above are superior.
The key with the top coat is apply a generous amount to dry to the touch nail colour. It dries slow compared to Seche Vite but no other product has protected my manicure better. I like to give it an hour to dry while I watch a show or you tube videos 😃

Whole Foods sells a polish remover that doesn't have any funky chemicals and it works well (I used it on my daughter when she was 5). Even though the Jose Maran remover wipes are expensive, they're worth it. Neither product dries out the nails, but they do a great job of removing even dark polish. Also, when you're at a restaurant and use the restroom, take a sugar packet with you. Mix the sugar with the soap and some water and it'll gently exfoliate your hands.

I had really brittle nails after a year of non stop gel nails, I got the Perfect Formula "nail essential duo" from Sephora and I could not believe how strong they feel, after struggling for over two months with growing my nails even a little I finally see an improvement due to this set... You should give it a try..

This came in good timing, I just finished a bottle of pure acetone and am going to need to get some new polish remover asap! My nails are pretty good aside from peeling. The tips always peel when they get past a certain length.
I need to get better about vitamins too, but I get so sick from them! Ugh, anyone else have that problem? I take them at night but sometimes it just doesn't help the stomach aches...

I have really hard nails, and this lack of flexibility made them break constantly!! What has helped me a lot is using glass files and put vaseline on my hands before go to spleep (it also helps with my eccema)

For me nail hardeners tend to cause peeling of the nails. They get my nails firm and they grow faster, but after few weeks of using the product, they start to peel. I tried so many hardening formulas, for years and years, and they all do the same. I have very thin and soft nails.
What helps me to keep my nails firm are sand effect nail polishes. And I have no trouble removing them, or any other glitters, with Bourjois 1 sec nail polish remover.

really good tips! well, I already don't use acetone and have been wearing base coats since last year. but the GLOVES thing! I like cleaning and typically, don't like wearing gloves because I sweat inside and yuck. but the lotion thing! great tip! i'll try that one!

Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Hardener is really good! I've been using it for years now and it helps keep my nails strong. It dries fast and I often put nothing but that on my nails and they look shiny and healthy. Try it!
