Dan, Your channel has been one of the best sources of content, motivation, and courage to take on more XJ/ZJ projects. Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together for the rest of us to learn, laugh, and enjoy. You have great passion for these "non-Wrangler" Jeeps and an ability to share how it is done. I think the thing I appreciate the most is how you spend extra time to make the OE work again (ie. taking material from the spare tire cover to repair the driver's seat and dismantling switches, VICs, and mirrors to re-solder or clean contacts). Keep up the great work and great videos!!
Your videos on General G inspired me to find a ZJ, (my daughter was driving a 2wd) for daily driving and something to tinker with. I found a 95 for 1500$. It’s been three years and its the most useful vehicle I’ve ever owned even over several pickups I’ve had. I’ve hauled axles, transfer cases, trash to the dump, recycling, driven cross country, (WA to PA and back), where I slept in the back for two weeks. Now it’s my mountain bike trailhead rig. Wish I still had my 84 Scrambler but I really love this thing. Needs a new tranny soon and the valves are getting noisy but I’m keeping it. I keep the seats in the back laid down, in fact only the bottom to the small seat do I keep inside. That is for the my grandson’s seat. Awesome vehicle! Thanks General! Thanks Dan!
Hey Dan . Rob from NSW Australia , My daughter just got her licence,I finished her ZJ 3 days before she passed , she loves it , Thanks for all your help and advice on her car , like everyone else we will never un sub mate , You're a legend ! Rob NSW Australia
I have my second ZJ. I sold the first one and bought one that was in better condition. Thanks to your channel, I got WJ seats in black and I got rid of that silver. And I'm slowly rebuilding the interior to black. Now it's silver and black. Looks pretty good. Love my ZJ 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5.2 L V8 4x4 230,000 mi runs great.
@Project Dan H: The Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir more-than-likely has that empty void at the top to help prevent a completely full reservoir from creating a vacuum as it empties, thus restricting flow through the line. Like filling a 2-liter soda bottle to the top, capping it and poking a hole in the bottom - it'll trickle out slowly - Remove the cap as it's draining and it'll start pouring out.
No not grievous. Well atleast you said the magic words 9'er may be coming soon, hopefully but please skip the sun roof cause, well you know why. Love all your content Dan, your the Man you just keep Jeeping and I'll keep watching and learning a few things along the way... all your content has helped me out with my 98 9'er immensely. Vids are very well done. All the things you mentioned were true. Death wobble is often a thing as well, but not the wisest to demonstrate. Appreciate your patient explanations and fixes!
Thanks Smiffy! I've death wobble in an XJ and a WJ... Check out my WJ death wobble vid vid... haha feel free to watch it! ua-cam.com/video/YiYl6S7vg48/v-deo.html
Zj never really gets death wobble usually.. death wobble also means youre a noob and need to replace something instead of crying like a baby about it. Get on your back and fix your damn Jeep
I love my 97 ZJ Orvis Edition V8. got it 2 and half years ago. Solid machine, did lots of due regular maintenance my self and detailing. Planning to apply for collector plates here in Canada soon. Car I drive 6 times a month and sitting now at 287k kms. Orvis edition absolutely my favourite Grand Cherokee version ever.
Just be glad you didn't have to bother with a broken blend door. I do NOT miss the plastic headlight assembly. My Eldest Son now has my 5.2 Magnum '97 LTD that had the full package. I do miss the ZJ seats which I haven't done a swap in the XJ's that now replaced both my girlfriends and my '97 LTD's. ✌
Love the ZJ. Grew up with a 93 5.2 with one of the first Clayton long arm kits and was amazing. Sadly, she is gone, but one day, I'll that lift kit in another ZJ hopefully one of the two 5.9 my dad has
Love our five-9 , it's got very near 300k miles clocked on OG engine and trans. Needs a rear end soon but it's been amazing. Keeper for sure! Oh and it does smokey, two tire fire burn outs in 2wd!
Dan thank you! I just bought our 6th ZJ! I’ve had new and fancy Grand Cherokees but I prefer the ZJ’s the best. The first was new in 1994 and we’ve been driving one consistently ever since. The latest is a ‘97 TSi w 5.2. Gonna run it through a body shop for clean-up and use a rusted-out ‘98 as a donor vehicle to upgrade any parts which are better on the donor. I’m excited the TSi doesn’t have a sunroof OR memory seats OR the auto HVAC system. Simple is better when dealing with vehicles with age.
Jeep is awesome when you know to fix the problem when you fix this problem you get the best vehicle in the world I know I get 2 I never would buy a vehicle again be a mechanic in enjoy your Jeep
I replaced the tumbler in my WJ with a part from Dorman that gets set to your original key the first time you use it, so no locksmiths required. I would guess (without looking) that they probably have one for the ZJ as well. It was pretty cheap, and super easy to replace. It's been working great since.
@@martinvalencia6141 I was talking only about the key and the ignition cylinder, if you replace those, the key fob module does not change, and neither does the chip key. The Dorman ignition cylinder I am talking about gets coded to your key the first time you use it, so you don't need a locksmith at all for just replacing the ignition cylinder (which solves the problem with accidentally pulling the key out in the ACC position, leading to a dead battery, which is the issue Dan had with his ZJ.)
Hopefully you get the V8 version, I just bought my ZJ from the original owner here in Cali, it's in super mint condition and your videos have taught me a lot. Thank you man 🤙
Only thing I don't like about mine is the uncomfortable seats. Worst seats ever. I have to sit slightly towards one side or the seams hurt my rear. Other than that, love it. '96 5.2 Limited, 73,000 miles.
i love everything about the Greivous ZJ. there was also a rare option on the rear seat that had a integrated child safety seat built in. i have 2 compkete ZJ seat sets, 1 dark grey cloth and 1 leather for my XJ projects😁
Dan , your cup holder is missing the rubber insert! My Free-Z ( same color '98 ) has one and it looks to be OEM. The two pockets securely hold anything that will fit inside. Very well done videos and you helped me get my ZJ up and running where I just finished a seven hour off road 4-WD Club adventure and the Jeep handled all of the trails, hills and descends like a champ. 100% stock.
I respect people who repair cars(if its possible ).and not scrap them. This video is perfect . And I m happy im zj owner . Your dad definitely beach rides lover)))). Bw
I'm going to miss the General. I did a screen capture of the selfie you took in front of the grill. It is going into my 'Jeeps Are Cool' picture folder.
I have the same jeep, color and all. But mine's a laredo with the 5.2L. That engine is bullet proof its at 188k still going strong. AC still works to with the factory compressor believe it or not.
Dan, that sure is a nice looking Jeep! Still working on my rear differential trying to get the gear pattern right. I have been slowed down from medical issues. But sticking with it 🇺🇸
I thought the key turned back so you could leave the radio on while you take the keys out . My ZJ was the best SUV Ive ever owned . 8 yrs of reliabilty with no major problems .
My truck being a 2000 dodge ram Laramie slt doesn't have the halo ignition ring illumination,, I have a black plastic ring no light.and im lucky my cylinder works fine and you cannot remove the key unless it is in the off position and I am ruining it so I can pull out the key lol and I like the ram second gen center console on the seats and the manual gearshift lever for the transfer case
@@ProjectDanH Thanks. And I have to admit that even the WL is growing on me, though I have reservations with Stellantis quality control. One ZJ I thought was cool, even though I like the later model years with slight redesigns throughout, was the one used in "Death Wish 5" as driven by Charles Bronson. A classic Limited trim, black with gold trim on the bumpers and side moldings with a tan leather interior. Beautiful vehicle. I also like the 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo Limited.
Actually they did consult physicists but it had to do with freezing of the fluid. As we all know, ice expands. That was in an effort to leave room for expansion. I'm not sure how well that worked out.?
How about how to install new windshield wipers? I did it about 15 years ago but I must have lost some IQ and patience between then and now... can't find a video about it for the ZJ. Thanks for the videos. I got my driver's side lower door hinge welded about a month or so ago and already one of the side welds has popped loose, have to get that welded again. I think what happens is the little thing that looks like a round gear stops rotating so it creates extra leverage on the hinge.
Dan, I'm sorry (and sad) to hear that you SOLD Gen. Grievous. I loved and learned a lot watching you rebuild Grievous. I own 2 ZJs, a 1996 and a 1997. The 96 is the exact same color as Grievous. I wanted to tell you that turning the key past off is called the AUX position. It is a normal function of this ignition tumbler (most cars I know of have an AUX position on the ignition tumbler. It's for playing the car stereo and other misc electricals without running the engine). Although, my keys do NOT pull out in the AUX position. I also wanted to tell you about another feature of the ZJ that most people don't know about. I'm not sure if the XJ or WJ or other Jeeps have the same feature (as far as I know it is a Chrysler thing so maybe they do?), but you can read your engine codes using the ignition cylinder. If your "Check Engine" light should come on for any reason, you can see the error code on your display without using an OBD code reader. Here's how...turn the ignition ON...OFF...ON...OFF...ON...OFF and finally ON...but DO NOT START THE ENGINE. Wait a minute. then Watch your lower right dash panel lights flash and count the flashes to read the number codes. The codes are usually 2 digit numbers...example: The first code will always be BATTERY code 12 and will look like 1) BLINK....2) BLINK-BLINK. End code will ALWAYS be 55 and will look like 5 BLINKS...5 BLINKS. All pairs of blinks in between 12 (battery) and 55 (end of codes) will be your trouble codes. I learned this trick with my 1996 ZJ when it had a bad ignition coil/ignition relay. I didn't know what was going on until I was told about this CODE trick and error code 45 kept coming up. I hope this is helpful information for future reference.
thank you so much for watching, yes the aux position is common however the keys are not supposed to come off. lol. not many people know about the Chrysler self-diagnostic mode. The XJs can be activated if you press and hold the odomiter button while putting the keys into the on position. Thanks!
My XJ is guilty of that overturned key thing. It has just been a jumpstart. I’m used to it and careful of it but anytime someone else drives it I gotta warn em. Lol
@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 no the key position isn’t a defect. Correct. However over time the line gets blurred as to just what position is going on in there. I find it’s just one of those things where you have to use a softer hand. If not you’ll be doing some repair you don’t really want to.
The key turning past the off mark isn’t normal for zj’s? I know in the wj’s and a many other Chrysler products the notch past the off position is for the auxiliary power mode
@@MacsSpecialitiesProperties well with leather and winter its nice to have lol. On my 5.9 its been bad for years now.. attemoted to solder new wire on it but it breaks again. Plus my 5.9 driver seat is torn badly from my sweating as i did landscaping in my car. Plus i tend to sweat badly on my back.. I ruined my grand wagoneers back leather too from just leather causing me sweat.. it sucks I have replacement covers though from another 5.9 just never got to installing em yet
Dan: You're probably watching this video because you're ZJ fans... Me: I'm watching this video because its a Dan H video I'm already missing that weather you were having when filming this. LOL
I love Jeeps, and I love Mercedes, I love BMWs, I can't stand someone comparing them all, they are far from the same, but I would never use a luxury car as a Jeep, nor vise-versa. My BMW needed more work than all my Jeeps combined, you wanna talk about "WTF were the engineers thinking" conversation, work on a luxury car...Why does my car need to go that fast anyway? Is there an autobahn in the states I'm not aware of? Great vid Dan, sorry for the rant, it just reminded me of another popular channel that had made a ridiculous comment.
I've had my 98 ZJ. Love it! But the most annoying thing you might mention is...the not letting you lock your doors if the keys are in the ignitionBUT if the car is running it will let you lock the doors from driver and passenger side!😢
Sad to see the Grevious go, im always alittle sad when a project car moves on but we cant keep them all forever. I know you love the XJs but the ZJ's are way more comfortable. If i were you i would look at a gen1 93-94 with a 318. Those have a much better off road axle and you can swap the part time dual range transmission in in stead of the full time one in those.
My ram Laramie slt doesn't have the outside temp fuel mileage type center console i have thoughts about putting one in my truck but I don't know what all i would have to do to make function and power it?!
Actually no you can take the key out on all ZJs there is no locking function.. but yes hes a noob the last click is for radio etc so you dont have 12v ingition on for power. Every single ZJ ive seen the key can pull out in any position.. ours was like that brand new.
@@MattBrownbill i actually prefer no key lock... its nice to have for when you need to check the mail box lock or lock your gate and not have to shut down the vehicle every time ( i have a locking mail box and gate on my property) or if you need to lock the vehicle but keep it running for the heat or a.c if someone is still in there. Like your dog or something. But ive never encountered a J with a locking key cylinder. Maybe its on older zjs ? From the first gen no idea. But deff not on newer ones. My 90 Grand Wagoneer has no locking key either
What do you mean there's no room underneath the xj's hood mine's in 87 with a 4.0 L there's plenty of room why well because it don't have Factory air conditioning but still there's tons of room under the hood
Do you happen to know anyone who has the map light on the passenger side of the center console push clear lense mine on my 2000 dodge ram Laramie slt longbed quad cab is broken the Dr side works the passenger side just rattles it doesn't click when you push it
ZJ 4.0 gets horrible gas mileage... but turns less than 1600rpm @65mph on the freeway, with a set of 31x10.50R15's with an unmodified suspension. ZJ 4.0 has annoying valve tappet 'tick', but starts every morning with no issues. ZJ 4.0 engineers made it so you can take the ENTIRE dash assembly apart and STILL not have access to the factory stereo antenna cable. ZJ 4.0 is NOT designed for people who are 6'5" - so even with the seat all the way back, you feel like you're kissing the dash. As an added BONUS - you simply cannot fold the back of the rear seats down all the way, unless the driver seat is all the way forward and you can somehow manage to drive down the street the door open and your legs spread apart like a woman in the stirrups at an OB/GYN office. ZJ 4.0 is something you cannot help but fall in love with, though. Easy to shift in and out of 4-wheel drive, rides comfortably and has a great turning radius - until you start messin' around with oversize tires on that unmodified suspension. As it is right now, I've done minor plastic bumper trimming and inner fenderwell rolling - but absolutely REFUSE to hack the fender up for added clearance. - I'd rather wait and install a lift.
I let my nephew use my ZJ 5.9l limited I told him well anyway you drive it she is going to drunk have fun 👍 lol he was filling it up every second day to going to work lol I call Jeep sir drunk alot 😅

Yes, the aux position... but the keys should be locked in. lol!!! what a Great ZJ
I love the ZJ and the WK2. Sharp looking vehicles.
Yes sir!
@@Watcher3223 yeah bro! Doesn't get much more classier than that!
Actually they did consult physicists but it had to do with freezing of the fluid.
As we all know, ice expands. That was in an effort to leave room for expansion. I'm not sure how well that worked out.?
Replace the bushing inside the door hinge, thats what i did with my jeep . 👍😸
Nice job 😉
I'll probably be watching your other videos cuz I'm about to buy one
Awesome, Thank you!!!
Nope, not a ZJ fan.
Just a DanH fan.
Nice video!
Thanks Jamie B 😁
Thanks!
jeep grand cherokee never fails to please. i love it!🙂
My XJ is guilty of that overturned key thing. It has just been a jumpstart. I’m used to it and careful of it but anytime someone else drives it I gotta warn em. Lol
Lol... New drivers just don't know!
Its an accesory only feature.. to keep 12v ignition power off.. it isnt a defect
Yes aux power, but the problem is the key shouldn't be able to be pulled out. People think it's off and then it goes dead. Lol
@@ProjectDanH yes thats normal they all do it.. ours did it brand new.. so no
I need a ZJ with heated seats!! Nice video on the Love-Hate!!
Drivers seat tends to always go bad the little wire on the left cheek rips as you get in and out repeadidly
@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 yeah honestly my ZJ is just a beater so no heated seats needed 🤪
I ruined my grand wagoneers back leather too from just leather causing me sweat.. it sucks
I have replacement covers though from another 5.9 just never got to installing em yet
@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 yeah I not much of leather guy myself!
Dan: You're probably watching this video because you're ZJ fans...
Me: I'm watching this video because its a Dan H video
I'm already missing that weather you were having when filming this. LOL
Thank yo for that brother! Much appreciated!
HAHA, your comments are always welcomed. I'm not a luxury dude so I don't think ill ever own a luxury vehicle. lol
I've had my 98 ZJ. Love it! But the most annoying thing you might mention is...the not letting you lock your doors if the keys are in the ignitionBUT if the car is running it will let you lock the doors from driver and passenger side!😢
How about a review on 1st generation ZJ
They're Great! lol
just bought back my old 95 zj
Sad to see the Grevious go, im always alittle sad when a project car moves on but we cant keep them all forever. I know you love the XJs but the ZJ's are way more comfortable. If i were you i would look at a gen1 93-94 with a 318. Those have a much better off road axle and you can swap the part time dual range transmission in in stead of the full time one in those.
Yes, Sad but true. Ill Keep my eyes open for all ZJ possibilities
Really great Video Dan👍🇺🇸
Thank you brother.. Glad you enjoyed it
I will miss The General Grievous. Soo long old friend.
wow my door is barely sagging thanks for enlightening me. FIXED
A niner! Let's GO!
Yess!!!
It's sad to see The General go..😥😥
Yes.. there will be more!
My ram Laramie slt doesn't have the outside temp fuel mileage type center console i have thoughts about putting one in my truck but I don't know what all i would have to do to make function and power it?!
😭 grievous really helped me out, thanks Dan
Glad I could help, I always appreciate your view
Te felicito. Tienes bien conservada esa Jeep.
The extra key position is an acc only one. You shouldn't be able to take the key out, so it does look like something is worn/broken.
Yep. Definitely a worn tumbler!
Actually no you can take the key out on all ZJs there is no locking function.. but yes hes a noob the last click is for radio etc so you dont have 12v ingition on for power.
Every single ZJ ive seen the key can pull out in any position.. ours was like that brand new.
@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 mine's a UK spec one, might explain the difference.
The worst cup holders ever, I 100% agree. I love my ZJ, a lot less electronics then that model thank God.
What do you mean there's no room underneath the xj's hood mine's in 87 with a 4.0 L there's plenty of room why well because it don't have Factory air conditioning but still there's tons of room under the hood
🤣 plenty of room for activities!
Question 98 grand Cherokee dome lights won’t turn off previous owner pulled fuse he said tipm is bad any other suggestions?
Your wife has a commander and i think she is the commander 👍😸
Fact
Mr Dan. I have one question. For example I have a 97 grandcherokee from what year up to 97 or 98would the engine interchange?
Any XJ engine. Any XJ enginen. Any TJ engine 97 -01. No WJ engines
Thank you Very much. Would you have a used engine for sa l e?
Ya, but the problem with the vic is they never work!
Why many people say that automatic transmission give a lot of problem?
Do you happen to know anyone who has the map light on the passenger side of the center console push clear lense mine on my 2000 dodge ram Laramie slt longbed quad cab is broken the Dr side works the passenger side just rattles it doesn't click when you push it
By any chance, Do you still have the original wheels 🤔? Do you have any plans for them?
I cleaned them up, painted them Dark Grey, sold them with em on it
I had the same and never had issues with none of my doors. Maybe I got lucky
you got lucky!!!
You didn’t mention the automatic transmition. My 4.0l is extremely slow with the At transmition, if someone know any solution, I appreciate
Adjust kick down cable. Make sure Cam nad crank sensors are working.
I dont buy off eBay, but i would love to buy it from you
Thanks Brother!
Great input! You nailed it brother!
I prefer the xj videos anyway. I’ve learned so much from watching your videos!
Glad you like them! Thank you so much!!!
Did I hear you say you are going to get a 99? You will like the WJ.
I have a 2002 WJ.. gonna hunt down a niner.. 5.9 ZJ
