Cork Taint? In Whiskey?! - BRT 250

- I've always heard that whiskey was too high proof and would kill the bacteria that produces cork taint. But recently I've discovered that this isn't true at all. And here's why!

Good video - i came into possession of two bottles of IW Harper BiB bottled in 1956 that belonged to my grandfather. They both had natural corks and had degraded into the bourbon. I opened one (he would have wanted me to!) and thankfully it still was very good - sweet, vanilla, caramel - no hint of bitterness or other off putting flavors.
I've never been cognizant that this could be an issue.
I wonder if that's what happened to my last bottle of Balcones Baby Blue. It started off normal, but with every glass it got worse and worse, until finally I had to throw it away. It was an evil taste that I'd never encountered anywhere before. I have another bottle that I'll open tomorrow, and we'll see how it is.
Dang so this is what happened to the bottle of Rebel 100 cask strength I have.
Randy Just wanted to say thanks for your videos. I won this tasting for cork taint. I was really surprised by the taint nose and even taste. I had a 12yo Dalmore scotch that I thought was very bad but now I know it is just taint. Thanks again.
About to dive back into all of your older vids. Thank you!
Thanks for being here!
I have a bottle of widow Jane 10 where I got similar notes. I trashed it in a review and I wonder if it is cork taint. Hmm
Great title haha and very informative 💪
Thanks!
Well played
Cheers!
I swear I am super sensitive to this. I've had a Rittenhouse rye (screw cap), Ironroot Harbinger, and Hughes Belle of Bedford 10 yr rye (synthetic cork) that tasted like licking a moldy basement floor. I've also described it as bruised apple because often I get this note in part of an apple that's been bumped and contaminated. And I feel crazy because nobody believes me. (Especially the last one which was like a $100 bottle.)
There are other compounds that produce a similar flavor, but I am unsure if they would affect the whole batch or if they would just affect individual bottles.
So this is weird.
I saw your video where you said that you got a potting soil flavor or on the 2023 GTS. I also got a potting soil flavor on 2023 GTS.
The weird thing is, I had a pour at 2 different bars and they both had a very strong potting soil flavor. I thought it was 2023 GTS as a whole that had that flavor. I got a bottle of the 2023 GTS in a lottery. - I traded it for that reason.
I guess I will have to try others if I am able to find them and see if I was right for trading it.
Yes, I have confirmed the batch was tainted, not just individual bottles. There are other compounds created by different conditions that have similar flavor, some of which impact entire batches and not individual bottles.
This helps for sure to understand why I have been disappointed with some whiskies I was SURE would be great but had that funk to them. Good video and thanks.
I feel like people who claim that cork taint cannot occur in whiskey have just been fortunate enough not to have gotten any tainted bottles. When there is a meaningful amount of TCA present, you can definitely tell, and there is no mistaking it. I've had a whiskey that was most definitely corked (Baker's 7 year that tasted like straight mildew and cardboard) and one that may have had a small amount of TCA, but not a huge amount (A Master's Keep BiB that didn't taste bad, just way more muted and musty than the bar pour I'd had earlier that week). You completely nailed it that while the alcohol may kill the bacteria, once TCA is in the wood, there is no removing it.
He said taint.
So just some feedback after tasting both of these bottles Randall had in this video. There is an extreme difference in the cork. It has a some what moldy taste like stall taste very interesting l. That BRTC for the opportunity to win the samples and experiencing this.
Taint, Hahahhahaha. Thanks for the opportunity!
Thanks. This is informative. As one who has set up a couple hundred bottles for retirement (that was official in 2023) one of my big fears is opening up said bottles in future only to discover the curse of TCA
Great topic great show today. Thanks for warning us. Thanks for educating us. I don’t think I wanna win this one.😂 not gonna enter
🤣
My one and only 1792 was tainted!
Until I learned about this ‘cork taint’, I thought 1792 was total garbage. Glad to know that isn’t the case. However, I understand that this unfortunate condition occurs with 1792 more than any other brand. I would be curious to know why. Is it something that occurs on the bottling line?
It is likely because of who they source their corks from.
So that’s what I’m smelling on a couple of bottles:)
Incredibly timed video. I've had good luck with whiskies until the last couple of months. Opened up an Old Overholt 10 and an Old Carter Rye Batch 14 that have good notes upon the initial tasting of the whiskey, but immediately rolls into a very earthy/musty flavor. The Old Overholt is undrinkable with the OC a close second.
Pretty excited my Prideful Goat arrived from Seelbachs. Have a good weekend!
Hope you enjoy it and have a great week!
I came across this a few years ago with a bottle of Fifty Stone ASM. I tasted it at the distillery and picked up a bottle. The bottle I got was absolutely different... sour and verging on undrinkable. It makes me think I should give them another try, but I don't think I can do it.
Try it at a bottle share or bar.
@@BourbonRealTalk good thought, though I struggle to recall ever having seen it at a bar. Maybe when I'm up in Maine next weekend.
Is there a tell-tale sign on the cork of the TCA being present? Does it deteriorate the cork?
No physical sign at all.
While I'm all for not chill filtering, the average American palate demands "smooth" whiskey. This can be economically produced only with chill filtration.
I’m feeling lucky
Good luck!
I’m not sure I want to sign up for this giveaway…… ignorance is bliss. 🤔😉
haha!
Thanks for the info Randy. Does cork taint happen before it’s bottled or can it develop in your bottles over time?
Either is possible.
Funny story, right after I watched this video, I went and started sniffing all of my whiskey bottle corks. 😂
I'm not sure if any are tainted. They all smelt like whiskey or a like that when you're inside a rickhouse at a distillery.
I always thought it was called “perineum”. But it taint.
🤣
I did not know it was that noticeable on the nose 🤯
What’s your take on real corks vs. synthetic corks?
Personally I used to not care for them but as time goes on I see that they’re probably even more useful. They overall seem to have a tighter seal and they don’t dry out.
I like them. I like screw tops and glass tops too.
@@BourbonRealTalk didn’t even think about screw tops..
I had bi lateral carpal tunnel surgery last month and just recently have been able to get into some of my Knob Creek’s 😆
Wait hold on does the cork taint or can it effect any other bottles?
TCA can spread even when there is not a natural cork. We discuss some examples in the video.
I encountered this a couple times. It’s a nasty sour cardboard taste. You’ll know it when you taste it.
❤
Taint😂
Ah a giveaway that you born would like to win and maybe regret winning when you try the corked sample 😂
It is funny, because if I went to someone's house, and they offered me a small pour of GTS (my favorite whiskey I have had hundreds of times) and a sample from a bottle that was tainted, I would pick the tainted bottle every time.
64👍
Cheers!
