IMO, after 10+ years of watching his drumming, Luke has very little "feel", relatively speaking. Too robotic and is basically the Jason Richardson equivalent of drumming, i.e., one of those "look what I can do" players, hence why they work together musically. There are many other "better" drummers on the Meinl roster who can really do more justice for illustrating all the different articulations that can be played on a cymbal. Matt Halpern in the obvious example, but there's also Joey Baca, Benny Greb, Mike Johnston, among many others. Also, I'm not discrediting Luke's drumming, he's phenomenal at what he does, I'm just not into the "drum machine" style of playing, but it's all subjective at the end of the day.
@@kernelxsanders spot on. everyone's going for some unique niche within drumming. Its all been done before, so to be relevant in 2010-2020 and onwards you either need to be an amazing all round general drummer with musicality, feel, ability to do justice to cymbals and their range as you discussed, or be a chris turner/luke holland type, getting dry cymbals and DW's to have that live drum kit sounds that imitates EQ drum program drums. that said, the sound that HAS evolved now from acoustic drums and the curing on cymbals, and the level of precision that's required to be relevant, is its own amazing achievement. We are all watching it and keeping up to date with Luke and drummers alike, because while its true that the playing may lack many elements of potential capability, so a loss in Qualitative and raw expression, well, i guess, you just try and become as good as these guys and get to this level 😛 Showing off because you can show off means that they are securing the views of a niche, which means for other bands as their relevancy disappears, and they try to get more techy or riffy or add other elements to gain traction, well, the guys that have already been doing "look what i can do" as the objective from the get go, will have set the bar to a certain height, and in so doing they secure their audience base. ultimately its a marketing move that leads to long term cash flow due to consistent views of their accumulated fan base and becoming "leaders" of the genre and the ones Known to be pushing the ledger on doing more precise, perfectly compressed rigged kit sounded perfection. it was an inevitable shift due to technology and perfection, and at the end of the day, its really damn hard to make money or a life out of doing music full stop. Great drum performance! but did we really expect otherwise from Luke lol also the phrasing on that lead at the beginning is so beautiful and jarring but in a tasteful way. Very Jazzy.
Luke's playing sounds like that first version of the drum part I write in Guitar Pro, which I then simplify the hell out of because it's impossible to play

If you're a cymbal company, there's no better guy to showcase your cymbals than Luke. His cymbal playing is super expressive and rich.

Also strong enough to inspire anyone for practising more or to quit drumming 😅

Exelente exelente ejecución men!!!!
Reminds me of "Focus Hour" by Bulb--Misha Mansoor's work before Periphery.
Possibly the first time I've seen the man pay attention to what he plays because he can so flawlessly playing anything without rehearsal

Luke is miles better than I'll ever be, and this is such a silly critique, but I will NEVER understand why he keeps that rack tom at such an angle bro
What's with the four fingers at the beginning of the video?
Probably because of "4th Order"

I love the simplicity of this kit. I am fed up seeing mountain-like kits.
