This is one of my all-time favorite comedy scenes. In a way I think Jerry Lewis was playing a joke on the audience. He was really the first one to drag a scene on much longer than it should until the audience was first laughing, then uncomfortable, and then the absurdity of the situation going on and on became hysterical again. The cartoon "Family Guy" does has learned this lesson well.
I don't think I've honestly ever seen in an American film more hilarious scene than this. It also stays in the moment - lot of time is spent on the hat-scene - it's atypical in US-movies. This is absolutely fantastic humor.
I met Jerry Lewis in 1981 I was working a Foot post by a Hotel near Central Park .. The doorman said Jerry Lewis is coming down would you like to meet him I said sure .. I was a 21 year old cop looking spiffy I my new uniform he smiled shook my hand and said a few nice words
I'd also acknowledge the staid versatility of Buddy Lester who plays the unflappable straight-man and Kathleen Freeman who always made the absurd seem normal.
I think this is the funniest scene of all of Jerry Lewis' movies. I haven't seen it for years and I wondered if I would laugh at it like I did as a kid, and I did. It is just unbelievably funny. I am not sure if it is funny because of Jerry Lewis or the other guy. The other guy was just hilarious.
More genuine humour and laughter in this 3 minute scene than in many complete so-called comedy pictures. Apparently this scene was completely improvised.
Mr. Lester always played the tough mobster and when I first saw this at the walk-in I thought he was going to KILL Jerry at the end of the scene. I've always wondered how much he got paid to let Jerry screw him up like that??? He must have gotten a bonus. Thanks for the sacrfice Buddy!
RE: "mercurymonterey (10 months ago) Its Jerry's scene but Buddy Lester "steals the show" this time.." My reply- I agree. And Buddy steals the show by barely doing a thing. A sign of an unselfish comedian. That's hard to find these days.
Beautiful, subtle and surreal, a tense gradual breakdown of a macho jerk, with the repositioning of the hat, and hair combing, reducing him to tears, because he is the real weak one, not Jerry. I wonder if he was hinting at Dean here, as he had a passing resemblance to him? Ooh that Jerry is a clever dude.
How either of them could keep from laughing. So much of it looked improvised--"That's my eyebrow." One of my top 10 funniest clips of all time. Thankyou for posting this.
I watch this about once a month, and it cracks me up every time, especially when buddy says, “ that’s my eyebrow”. I’d love to see the alternate camera angle that shows Jerry laughing.
🤣🤣🤣 loved the last second! Takes me back to my childhood....I used to watch Jerry Lewis films all the time. I actually had a crush on him too! Just his wonderful sense of humour I think 😅😅
@amazmace I was just telling my friend this last night. We were sitting on the couch laughing so hard, and the fact that makes it so funny is that neither of them laugh.
how Buddy Lester kept his composure is beyond me lol

very good comment! :)

Saw this when I was a kid and never noticed Jerry Lewis cracking up when fixing the hat. Makes it so much funnier.
OMGosh you're right!! Three different times Jerry loses it ... I never noticed before either.
You're right I hadn't noticed that till you mentioned and went back to watch again, he clearly is laughing. That's freaking hilarious.
This is a brilliantly paced comedy gem, which explains why the French rightly love Lewis.

What did he say, if I may ask? Being a Lewis fan. Born in 91
I never get tired of this bit. I laugh out loud every time I watch it. "I can't see out of my left eye." Cracks me up...
'Would YOU like it that way?" gets me...🤣
The Ladies Man was one of Jerry's all time best movies!
I want to see the outtakes from this scene.
He broke that tough guy into a million pieces
I'd also acknowledge the staid versatility of Buddy Lester who plays the unflappable straight-man and Kathleen Freeman who always made the absurd seem normal.

My God, Buddy Lester could be Dustin Hoffman's father ...
This is one of my favorite scenes! You don't see great comedies like this anymore.
More genuine humour and laughter in this 3 minute scene than in many complete so-called comedy pictures.
Apparently this scene was completely improvised.
If you watch carefully when the camera is behind Jerry's head, you'll notice he was stifling his laughter and trying not to break character. 😂
@@PhoenixProdLLC Yes, Jerry does crack up.😂
He walked in all dapper and left looking like a hobo. Lol.
6:08 - My God, that's a riot! It was funny already, but Jerry's cracking up makes it hysterical.
i love how jerry starts to crack up at the end on the hat scene.. "thats my eyebrow" gets me everytime. lol
6:14 you can hear Jerry laughing
The hat scene is brilliant lol
When I first saw this a million years ago, I thought that was George Raft. Buddy Lester is so good in this. And yes, the eyebrow pull is the best!
Buddy Lester is perfect in this scene, sure. But Jerry...is Jerry. I love him.
I love it at the end when Jerry genuinely starts laughing but trying to hold it in. Proper comedy! ❤

I don't know how Buddy Lester kept a straight face, and Jerry Lewis lost it.
Should I start it over? "DO SOMETHING!"
Comb my hair. I like the brim down
Not all the way down.
Instead of The End the picture concluded with OVUR. Too funny!
"Do you know that you better get up and give me my hat?!"...LOL!
Omg this is old as dirt but hilarious! 🤣
I wonder if Buddy Lester cracked up seeing himself in this scene. He probably didn't even know how hilarious he was while he was being filmed.
I think he gives him the finger as he's walking to the door. Wow, how'd that get through?
Note the way he goes up the stairs at the end. That foot stuff. Did it again in Scorsese's film The King of Comedy when he escaped.
Each time he combs his hair it looks like Hitler.
Lewis loses it 3 times during this scene and he was the director.

Love this skit! OMG Mom and I always recite the part from the part about the hat...Jerry can barely keep from bursting into laughter! Classic!

Willard C. Gainsberg (Buddy Lester): OVUR! O.V.U.R! OVUR!
Herbert (Jerry Lewis): THAT'S ovur. I was never so scared of anything...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This guy looks more like George Raft than George Raft does.........
I haven't seen this movie in a long time and still makes me cry lauguing. I don't know how they possibly could finish that scene with a straight face.
How either of them could keep from laughing. So much of it looked improvised--"That's my eyebrow." One of my top 10 funniest clips of all time. Thankyou for posting this.

Say what? Killa? That don't start with "C"!
Buddy- "Hold it! I don't believe it. Do you know you're sitting on my hat!?"

😆😆😆😆
You know, I re-watched it. You're right. Buddy Lester was in a few of Jerry's films--and he makes a hell of and Alaskan Polar Bear Heater.
Girl name with black underwear 03.10 ?
@amazmace I was just telling my friend this last night. We were sitting on the couch laughing so hard, and the fact that makes it so funny is that neither of them laugh.
Ha.
This must be why Audrey whitby is in love with joey Bragg
Willard "C" Ganemond "C" is for "CILLER"
If I catch you getting even close - Its ovur "OVUR"
Buddy Lester was in 4 Jerry Lewis movies. He was the bartender in "The Nutty Professor".
I don't like it that way! I'm dying here in Philly!
It says 'It is ovur' at the credit roll.
Omg I have not seen this movie in years!!!
Laurel and Hardy, many years later!
He really looks a Wiseguy.
