Bauhaus - She's In Parties

Shot in a disused warehouse in Wardour Street London, March 1983. Filmed by Howard Guard (who also directed the iconic Maxell tape advertisements), the end sequence of the band asleep in the back of the limousine was, according to Guard, very much for real. Finally wrapped up as dawn was breaking through. Poignant message with the scattered sleeves....single taken from the album Burning From The Inside.

I used to get ready to go out at night to this song, on my “getting ready for the club” mix on cassette. Also on that cassette was the cure:close to me, the cult: she sells sanctuary, Siouxsie and the banshees: spellbound, and a bunch of other stuff. Still love this song, and I go see Peter and/or Bauhaus as often as possible.

I went into my normal lunch spot located in the downtown area of a normal, Southern California city. There he was: a tall, slender, pale red headed man . He wore tortoishel sunglasses, a dark tweed trench coat and ankle boots. No one noticed the guy but me. I carefully approached trying not to bother him but I couldn't resist. "Are you David J?". "Yes" he answered in a light, low voice. He got his coffee right then. I proceeded to geek out, telling him that I was a lifelong Bauhaus, Love and Rockets and Tones on Tails fan. He thanked me very graciously as if it wasn't as the first time anyone had recognized in public. Clearly no one had that day and maybe it makes sense but I'm glad I did.

@@thecocktailian2091 I think what you mean is why isn't there as much diversity in dress and style when you compare the 2010's to previous decades? right? if so, then yeah, you're correct. i would argue that the style of today is a lot less uniform and concrete when compared to the style/aesthetics of previous decades (this includes subcultures as well) because there really isn't a reason to adopt a particular fashion or aesthetic anymore because their isn't any real social utility to it anymore. The reason why goth, new wave, rockabilly and other aesthetics were adopted in the first place was due to the social utility it provided as it enabled individuals to easily spot others within their "in group". nowadays, you don't really need to do that. you can go to social media platforms and find like minded individuals who like the same things you do. you don't need to dress goth to find other goths, but in the past you had to. i would also say that this has been a net positive for subcultures as there is no longer a need to spend tons of money on expensive clothes in order to be perceived as being in the "in group". i hope i addressed your comment, and i hope whoever reads this has a good day.

    • @thecocktailian2091

@@hari2185 You make some good points, I utterly appreciate your thoughtful response. I would argue fashion is a GIANT part of things. Always has been, for centuries. The punk movement had no money, and their fashion was born from nothing. Early Goth days had access to vintage clothing at an extremely affordable price. Rude Boy/ Skin fashion was just blue collar wear. Sadly it has only become expensive today. Social" Utility" is a curious word, not sure how to interoperate it. Social media has lot of positives, but it also has a lot of negatives. I believe the negatives outweighs the positives. Actual Human interaction has become an oddity. When saying hello to some one on the street is met with fear opposed to just a respondent "hello". Dare to strike up a conversation in a pub or a cafe and one all of a sudden becomes a predator, not just a fellow person. Thoughtful minds like your own is the futures fortune, I hope there are enough of you.

True emo died long ago when they started ripping off other people's subcultures.

Good to see memories for so many conjured by this video and the music. My enduring memory is of the most electric band that I have ever seen live -- Hull (of all places), 1982, playing in an old ballroom. 'Bela' was literally unreal -- a gaunt Peter swinging a stage-floor floodlight on a long tethered-cable in an arc metres above his head under strobe-light. You believed you were in the Carpathians...
