10:08 I'm pretty that the female character was already in the game before they decided to add Yasuke. Not sure if there was meant to be a main Japanese character. It just feels like she has been shooved aside. I don't mind Yasuke being a main character. Truth be told, I think ubiosft has a lot to play with in regards to his story since much is unknown. I just hope they are respectful to the time period and the culture.

    • @Alteori
      @Alteori  22 дні тому +31

Agreed. They're using yasuke to market the game very heavily because of his significance. But then people that actually want him to be the main character or want to play as him might be let down too if they discover he is not a main character.

@@Alteori I don’t believe yasuke is woke marketing. This game could never have a male Japanese protagonist be a use it would have to compete with an entire roster of other Japanese male samurai like gin Sakai who is amazing.
Yasuke solely exists to be unique, he is an identifying factor completely different from other games (hence why we’re talking about him rn)
yasuke in fiction has always been badass black samurai, it’s insane that people are so obsessed with his real life historical character.
Assassins creed has always been fiction, there is nothing wrong with using a real person as a foundation. < this is literally what every manga and anime about yasuke has done, why is it an issue now?
If you wanna be a Japanese dude then play ghost of Tsushima, it’s a much better game anyways lmao.

I agree, even in the trailer she felt more significant than yasuke. I believe the story revolves around her and yasuke is a playable supporting character.
Similar to how gta 5 franklin is the true protagonist of the game, and Micheal and Trevor are playable characters he associates with.
Hence why one of the two can be killed off at the end of the game.

Don't let the Yasuke outrage distract from the use of Chinese architecture in a Japanese setting, the outrageous prices (Standard Edition: $70USD/$90CAD, Gold: $100/$145, Ultimate: $130/$170, Collector's: $280/$370), and the bs to come in their trash cash shop in a game we won't own.

Yasuke is a first name. If Yasuke had been elevated to samurai by Oda Nobunaga, then he would have been given a family name as an indication of his rise in status. Commoners had only one name, while samurai and nobles had two names. William Adams was made a samurai by Tokugawa Ieyasu and given the full name Miura Anjin. My wife, who is Japanese, had heard of Yasuke, but here in Japan he is considered as Nobunaga's servant who Nobunaga kept around mainly for his curiosity value.

The Britannica is in no way a historical record of anything, even in Japan there is next to no historical records of Yasuke having ever existed, it's not something you will hear from in our history class in school, and what little there is of him says that he was Oda Nobunaga's retainer, which to put into perspective, that was to a Daimyo the equivalent of what a caddy is to a golfer today, the person who carried his stuff, and that he served in that position for anywhere between 1 to 5 years (accounts also differ heavily on this) and was eventually sold back to the same Jesuits that he was bought from, I wouldn't have played the game regardless because I think all AC games have been mediocre at best since Black Flag, but the fact is Yasuke was as much a great Samurai as the character from The Woman King was a great liberator for African people.

Meanwhile the media is saying how great Shadows is with Yasuke whilst Japanese players who have watched the trailer are criticizing it for using Yasuke as a Samurai, for using Chinese Architecture, not using any of the historically legendary/mythological shinobi from the time setting as playable characters whilst also creating a fictional daughter of one of the Legendary Shinobi that he never had.
What would've been more interesting is if you had a Male and female Japanese Shinobi that you had to switch between each with their own play styles, this is because male and female shinobi's had different roles and way of their job... the men would be quick in and out infiltration for securing intel/assassinations, whilst female shinobi were long term infiltrators who would get into the hose hold of the target usually by marriage/as a concubine, pass on a constant stream of intel until (usually) years later assassinating the target.

Interestingly that is possibly the reason why female shinobi arent recorded. Most often the reason we have recorded shinobi is that they got caught or were actual clan leaders. So while kunoichi being a thing are debatable, it is highly probable that it worked that way. The female shinobi were just so effective that they never got caught.

Yasuke wasn't a samurai. He was a retainer who carried around Oda sword. Also the only reason Oda took a liking to him is because seeing someone naturally black was baffling and kind of impossible to him.
If they wanted to actually do the Stanger in a strange land type of Story, William Addams was actually a Samurai. Yasuke couldn't even speak Japanese.
The fact that we are getting the first AC game in Japan, and instead of going with someone Japanese or even legends like Musashi, Honda or Yukimura we get a guy who wasn't even a Samurai just because he is black.

Maybe Yasuke was a stereotypical name given to men of African descent, maybe it’s the same guy, or maybe the story is fiction. Either way, he wasn’t considered a threat for revenge after Nobunaga was assassinated and was allowed to live accordingly. If he was seen as especially smart, strong, intelligent, or otherwise feared, they wouldn’t have been so lenient or would have hired him for the novelty, but no such records exist.

Honestly a lot of articles gp into "the roles of a samurai" and how Yasuke "could have been" in all these situations. How there's not a hint of implication that their closeness at honnouji could indicate he was nothing more than a slave. It just sounds like a lot of post-facto justification for overhyping this man so "black history" can just have another entry.
I hate that I've been taught to think this way but judging by corporate response how there's wnough Asian Samurai and no black ones (and that's bad?) just means they were better off using a no name freed slave girl for a shinobi or something.
They came out that historical accuracy isn't their concern and their entire game may as well be fantasy, but even if they we're making up nonsense along the way, entirely shattering any doubt as to their stance does remove a lot of the appeal to people that used this as a medium to get interested in history.
The execution undermines the premise. "We can increase our diversity by highlighting a black fictional character as our main protagonist." Lying about a historical figure will attract attention allowing people to call bs.

The issue is that most AC fans expected a story about shinobi involved in the war of the assassins and the templars in Japan but instead we get this 🤷🏾‍♂️. Honestly, I don't know what Ubisoft is doing these days maybe that is no longer the focus.
Another thing is AC main characters are fictional characters that during their missions intermingle with historical figures, but this time Yasuke an actual historical figure has been set up as a MC, which is weird. Why are they changing this rule now??? He could have been an important character (like the other historical figures in oast games) in the story or have a dlc storyline for him but noooooo.... They need to insert that chocolate in Japan.
It's just sad.... These two will most likely have to carryout missions from assassinations to all out battles whereby Yasuke will be so easily identified which puts a target on his back which in turn jeopardizes their efforts 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️. It's one thing if he is fighting for current regime since he will have a lot of allies but that defeats the purpose if he is part of the bloody resistance!

Watch Metatron's video about this, he goes into this in depth. It's not impossible that Yasuke was a Samurai, as this term was not in common usage at the time, so the fact that he is never referred to as such is meaningless. According to Metatron, there is evidence that Yasuke received warrior training before (if I recall correctly) he went to Japan. Metatron also points out that, even if he wasn't Samurai, he still could have been Bushi (warrior class) as, though all Samurai were Bushi, not all Bushi were Samurai. As for Alteori's reading from Britannica, I strongly suspect that it was written by a DEI fanboy "historian", as it's making assertions that lack evidence. Yasuke's story would definitely make the subject for a great game, just not an Assassin's Creed game.

Personally I’m interested in an assassin’s creed game that does have Yasuke as a Maine character given how obscure he is in history. For the problems I’ve been hearing about:
“Assassin’s creed should be historically accurate.”
Right, the same game series that hade alien technology, men fighting gods in the Egypt one, fighting several kinds of Greek monsters in the other, ect.
“Why they gotta have the black man playing the assassin when he’s obviously going to stand out.”
Missing the fact that the other characters is the kunoichi so she’s the one playing the stealth one, while Yasuke is the one who plays the straight forward samurai. Just like they did in ghost of Tsushima. Were you can ether fight as a ninja, or a samurai.
“He wasn’t a samurai, he was just a retainer.”
You realize you can be both. Ranmaru was also a retainer who is also depicted as a samurai. Hedioushi, started out as just the guy who held Nobunaga’s sandals before being made a samurai, and then a daimyo as well. So why couldn’t Yasuke be the same?
Now personally I’d have more of a problem with the high price tag it looks like the game will have. Instead of the hair trigger “woke,” issues. Though I do get the fact that allot of diversity has been used in so much stuff but in a token way. This I feel is not that.

why not, i'll put this here too. it's a comment from native people there:
"I am Japanese, I am writing this using a translator, please listen to me. First, I would like to talk about how Yasuke was treated in Japan. Yasuke's name does not appear in most history books, and for this reason he is treated as a fictitious entity that never existed.
He does not appear in history textbooks for elementary, junior high, and high school students, and only those who have studied history at universities have heard of him. Even in the few history books that mention his name, it only says that he "served as a peasant and carried baggage. Everything about him is a fiction. He was tall, muscular, and strong, and Nobunaga, suspicious of whether his skin was his own, had his men wipe it to make sure.
All of them are outright lies. And it is not even known if the Yasuke in the history books was a black Yasuke, because the name "Yasuke" is like John, a name that can be found anywhere in Japan! Also, Yasu came to Japan one year before Nobunaga died, Nobunaga had already almost unified Japan, how could he be a samurai without a war?
And even a 10 year old Japanese could tell that he was not a samurai, because he had no family name. When we Japanese introduce ourselves, we say our family name and then our first name. This is because until the Meiji period (1868-1912), when equality among the four peoples was introduced, ordinary people were not allowed to have family names. In fact, some ordinary people have become samurai or feudal lords, such as Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who achieved greatness after Nobunaga, who rose from a mere peasant Tokichirou with his intelligence and courage to finally become Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
And you foreigners often use the word "retainer", which is a mistranslation of the Japanese word "KASHIN". the original meaning of "KASHIN", is all those who work for the samurai family. A cook, a gardener, a maid, etc. are all KASHIN (retainers). In other words, those who support Yasuke are making a fuss based on a source of lies written by a black supremacist who cannot even read Japanese properly. Ridiculous.
Yasuke was in the service of Nobunaga, so he fits the definition of KASHIN, and Samurai are KASHIN because they also serve Nobunaga, but that doesn't mean Yasuke is a Samurai! The reality is that Yasuke was like Nobunaga's pet or maid!
We Japanese people will never forgive ubisoft's foolishness. Please let those who read this know how we feel."
whether the points above are true or not, please verify them with real native japanese, ask them point per point.

It's the point of bringing Yasuke into the Assassin Order (or whatever the Assassins called themselves in Japan at the time) which would pull kind of a Haytham and Edward Kenway situation. No, Yasuke isn't the son of Nobunaga (Yasuke's historical Shogun/Daimyo) but him turning on Nobunaga for the Assassins unless Nobunaga is part of the Order would be like how Haytham is an Assassin-born Templar. Yasuke would be the reverse essentially. And this isn't like Syndicate, reportedly. Yasuke and the other girl are both playable for their own things but not to the point of switching freely between the two. At least from what I've heard. This game reminds me a lot of the Young Samurai/Ninja book sagas, Yasuke is like the main character who first gets Samurai training (pre AC Shadows plotline) before the Uprising happened and saw the Samurai destroyed (scene where Yasuke meets the Assassin girl) and then gets trained by a secret Ninja village while still being on the run from the Shogunate or whatever the ruling power was (only got to the end of Ring of Water (I believe, may have been fire that came first as the Ninja half of books were named after the five elements) which was book one of five there) because he (the MC) is a white, Christian teenager.

A cliff notes for anyone willing to educate themselves a bit more.
    1. Yasuke and Oda lived during the Sengoku Period, specifically the Azuchi-Momoyama Period (near the tale end of the Sengoku Period).
    2. While Samurai were Retainers, not all Retainers were Samurai. They were separated between Civil Officers and Military Commanders, the latter being Samurai.
    3. Foreigners during the Azuchi-Momoyama Period and before were unable to be promoted beyond a certain point. Kosho was the highest rank they could achieve.
*4. The Edo Period (1603-1868) is when the last two points change. To maintain loyalty, the Kashindan which is the institution of Retainers began to settle Samurai into the role of Civil Officers, this is how it later is discretely raised to generally being synonymous with Samurai. Kosho were also raised during this time as Toyotomi and Tokugawa recruited the sons of Samurai families, in part as political hostages to maintain the Samurai families loyalty to not have a repeat of Akechi who betrayed Oda Nobunaga. Also it was during this time that foreigners started being raised to Samurai Status. Almost back to back three Korean men were promoted to Samurai. The first even becoming the Comissioner of Kanazawa City.
    5. Yasuke while having participated in battle, was sent back to the Jesuits who originally *gifted* him to Oda, by Akechi.
While there isn't much written about Yasuke, there is a lot about the Sengoku Period that can be used to fill in certain gaps in the story. Now possibly as a sign of respect the Japanese looked back and honored him with Samurai Status post-mortem, but had he been 20 years late getting to Japan he maybe could've gotten the honor to truly achieve that status in his lifetime. His story is really something of a tragedy.

I have seen plenty of videos discussing this right now, and I can totally understand why this has people upset and rightfully so. They took a person who may or may not have actually existed to turn into a main character in a game that made it clear they did care about trying to make things historical accurate when they removed crossbows because they weren't accurate to the time period. This was about feudal Japan, and they used a side character who, if they actually existed, could not be a samurai because he wasn't noble blood. Maybe if this had just been another NPC in the game people might have looked past this, but it's fact that this was pandering and insulting to do to the Japanese history for a poor conceived desire for DEI woke points. No matter what sales will suffer from this as people are tired of all this pandering in games, and this has absolutely nothing to do with anything towards racism. That's a weak and poor argument to make when this was never needed in any of the previous games in the series. I served with plenty of Latinos who love everything about the Japanese culture and will also feel the same about this.

Though due to the ambiguity & how little we actually know for certain, it could make for a very interesting story. A slave from a distant land brought to Japan, being sold to Oda Nobunaga, who turns out to be a Templar. Yasuke serving Nobunaga while being looked down upon & even mistreated by many around him, eventually joining the Brotherhood & leaving Japan. I have doubts about them making a good story though, unfortunately

To play Assassin's Creed you need at least some suspension if disbelief. You do usually walk around in your assassin's garb in open daylight after all.
But even a native Japanese man that tall would be remembered. The only black man in all of Japan? That's not someone anyone will forget. But him being an assassin?
He also walks around in full armour that would only be worn on the battlefield? Every law enforcement would stop that person or at the very least keep a close eye on that one.
All that stretches it a bit far me.
I should add that I have only played one Assassin's Creed game that came free with a magazine and discovered, while fun, it games like that aren't for me, so I'm not a loss for Ubi Soft.
