Fixing the R1A1 FAL - Bolt Catch and Gas Regulator

- After picking this up used, I identified a couple things that needed fixing on this particular R1A1 Sporter. The gas regulator was loose enough to adjust itself while firing and there was no last shot hold open. In this video I show how to potentially fix both those issues.

I have an L1A1 it’s pretty good despite the fact that I had to make my own feed ramp groves with a dremill it doesn’t like metric mags but it works with inch pattern ones. It works great now
Wait, is your receiver cut for inch mags or metric? Either one or the other.
I have a CAI R1A1/L1A1 runs great. But the charging handle is STUPID stiff.
Granted, i replaced the gas piston springs and recoil springs in the buttstock with ARS springs. Just was told by a “gunsmif” that’s the first thing to do. Gun cycles fine, just STIFFER than a wedding night pecker. Watching you cycle the bolt with ease makes me jealous lol
Was it that stiff before you changed out the springs?
I'm going to try this on my Century L1A1. The BHO mechanism is ground off, and it makes me nuts. Thanks for being so detailed on this video!
Im jealous man. Had I had another good, panic free two years an FAL would have made its way into my collection.. alas.. that will not be happening now. Have fun with her. Once the ammo supply comes back Id love to see more FAL and C308 vids.
Rumor has it that PSA will eventually make FALs. If that happens they should be a lot more available
@@OreGear Still waiting... ;) Ah, hell who am I kidding? I live in commie Washington. We lost our rights last year. Lucky for me I built an FAL out with a Imbel kit from Arizona Response Systems a few years before. However, I can kiss goodbye buying anything new. Although, the Mini 14/30 is not banned so I will probably be picking up a Mini 30 as my next purchase. Not that anyone cares lol...

WBP has the most early model AK-47 available on the market right now. PSA's Romanian kit builds are also nearly flawless.
L1A1s never had a last round hold open. For some reason the common wealth ditched that feature when they adopted the rifle. Also Arizona Response Systems has inch magazines.
Sorry it’s early. Didn’t realize it’s a metric style rifle. They do need a some work, I sent mine to ARS to have the barrel threaded and ended up needing a new locking shoulder as mine was walking out and the bolt had to be properly machined as it was just ground down by century until it fit. It’s a very fun rifle but one I’m still putting a little bit of work into. All in all I’m glad I own mine.

You should be able to find some good mags on DS arms.
Currently they only have metric mags

If you’re going to paint it don’t spray paint it if you want the Rhodesian camo job get the paint from Arizona response systems it’s an exact color match that’s what I just ordered for mine. Spray paint won’t look very authentic for rhodie pat
The British model didn’t use the mag hold open pin, it’s a commonwealth parts kit……leave it alone

@@OreGear Maybe you should because as happened example in the battle of Long Tan the Fal L1A1 only semi-autos of 108 Australians held off 2500 Viet Cong with AK-47. Furthermore, the war tactics based on the Aussie's FAL in Vietnam led them to other successes but the American command did not want to learn from those who knew how to fight in the jungle and deployed that enchanting rifle: the Mattel rifle (M16) in 5.56 thinking that the volume of fire made the difference : moral of the story at the end of the war some statistics also speak of 2000-3000 bullets fired by the Americans for a single Viet Cong !!!!!
Second example the war of Rhodesia in which both sides used the FAL, but the Rhodesian brigades trained in semi-auto accurate shots against the AK-47 also other FAL of the communists are said to have gone through the enemy teams like butter.
Still in the Falklands the rifles were all FAL L1A1 for the British and metric full auto for the Argentines, I have read many reports and the British veterans have never complained about their rifle.
To close fullauto it's only good in video games because a soldier's real nightmare is not the volume of fire BUT RUNNING OUT OF BULLETS.

Congratulations for the very useful video the automatic hold-open at the end of the cycle was the only defect of this rifle !!!
Saying an l1a1 is not a FAL is like saying a zastava in not an AK.
