- Outboard Voltage Regulator - PWF's Brandon is having boat motor issues with his 1996 Mercury EFI 175 outboard. Have you heard an outboard motor do this? Please listen to this motor and let me know if it is a bad voltage regulator, trigger, etc.
In this video, I give symptoms of a bad voltage regulator/rectifier and replace one of the two on my skeeter bass boat. Thanks for your help!!!

***UPDATE!!!**
Hey Guys! Narrowed it down to my ECU. Sent it off to Brucato Power in NC to run diagnostics on it. They came back and told me the "injector driver #3" had failed...So, new ECU on the way. Hope this helps.
Got NEW ECU/ACU Back! Fixed my issue. If you want to see install and performance test here it is: ua-cam.com/video/qliwbIQ_j-0/v-deo.html
Thanks ! I learned something from this that can help out a buddy of mine. He’s got an 87 Ranger with Mercury 150. His tach quit working a while ago. NBD, he’s not racing anyone😂. But he’s had difficulty starting, and more often than not, trouble getting up on plane. He calls it “feathering the throttle “ but he’s not getting hardly any acceleration. Mechanics around us stink and charge crazy prices with poor actual results. He’s paid for; carb cleaning, carb synchronization, tune up ( which is probably just new plugs knowing these clowns) and other nonsense but can barely use the boat anymore. I think I’m going to pro-actively swap out his voltage regulator and try that.
Happy to help. Let me know what you find out. My problem ended up being my ECU, but as you could see the voltage regulators were fried and needed replaced. Good luck
Thank you Brandon. Keep up the good work. You are appreciated!
Thank you!
I'm so glad I found this video. I'm having same issue with my boat. Once it's done raining and get a semi decent day I'll have to look into this asap.
Just now read the comments. I experience all of the symptoms that those can cause though.
Unfortunately, I’m still trying to figure it out. A lot of signs pointing to ECU. Hoping something else but don’t really want to go buying parts just at the chance it fixes it. Good luck and I will let you know if I figure something else out
Buen trabajo 👍
Subbed just for your name Prestige Worldwide Fishing. Haha live it
😂 Thanks man! You gotta think they will make a step brothers 2 right?
I had this problem a couple years ago. It was my ecu. Got a new one and fixed my problem completely
Damn. That’s what I was afraid of. Cost quite a bit?
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing i got lucky and found one on ebay brand new from a guy that was cleaning out his boat shop for $375. You can have one rebuilt for $600. I think new ones are around $1000-$1200 if i remember right
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing simon motorsports is the place i talked to that can rebuild them
My boat was doing this and I was thinking it could've been a problem with my carb😂
Thanks for posting. I had that problem today with a motorcycle. My rectifier shorted out hard and started melting its case (epoxy sealed).
I believed the problem you’re having is the timing control box on the top left corner of the motor. Usually what happens is that when the rectifiers go bad or can cause a voltage surge to get delivered to the timing control box which fries it.
The sound you’re hearing is an intermittent spark.
Awesome! I will look into that now. Hopefully cheaper fix than ECU? Thank you!
Did the ECU fix your issue? I have a 96 200EFI that does the same thing and have been chasing the issue for a few years now.
Yes! Just drop a video about new ECU/ACU. ua-cam.com/video/qliwbIQ_j-0/v-deo.html
I'm having some problems with my 2013 mercury 60 efi
I thought it was fuel but once I get on plane out the landing. It bogs down. I have a new power panel and the voltage is all over the place. I check the resistance on my stator. Thats was good. It just starts running like it missing but might be electrical.
Not sure, you said you checked the stator but that is what it sounds like to me. Maybe something with the high side of the coil. Low side is working but when it gets to certain rpm and transfers to high side it causes you to lose power.
Just a guess but maybe stare at that rpm when you are on the boat next and see if the bog happens at the same rpm
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing Once it bogs. It sounds like it's missing or running out of gas. Its usually around 3k rpms always.
@2751Brandon man, it does sound like the stator. Bad stator can cause problems for the fuel injection system too.
Don’t yell at me if it isn’t though 😂
Where can I get some of the connectors mine are burnt bad
These are what I bought (also in video description in case you lose it)

I have a 200hp Johnson ocean pro on 2001 Aquasport osprey 225, the problem, all electronics are out changed out the batteries and boat started right up the volt gauge is showing 13v but when I throttle up the voltage goes from 13v to 16v and all electronics shut down wtf! Happens alot on the open water, HELP!
And you’ve replaced both of your voltage regulators?
so did you figure it out what was it im having same problem
No. I was told couple days ago to check “timing control box”? Looking into this now. I was planning to change trigger next but someone said they did that and didn’t work.
Hope to have a better idea soon and will post about it
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing check your reading on trigger you should get 1200 omes on both legs i just had to order a stator for mine its doing same thing
Did you get the problem fixed? We have a 150 doing the same thing but worse .
No!! It’s driving me crazy! I plan to change the trigger next, but don’t feel real confident that is it. Let me know if you find anything out and I will do the same.
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing I have n f115 Yamaha, same thing going on I changed all kinds of stuff illuminated fuel system, etc. ended up checking volts at the injectors and starter main feed wire and they are jumping up and down when the motor studders, it'll run smooth for a min and be at correct voltage then jump voltage and studder. I changed the regulator too and tested the stator. made no change still broke lol. saw a video about the water sensor robbing voltage so maybe it's a sensor doing it not sure. hoping it's not the ECU. but check your volts and see what happens.
Man you are telling me! I really hope it isn't the ECU. Planning to start working on it a bit more once it warms up. Going to try the trigger next. Good tip on the water sensor - I will look into that too. Appreciate the help
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing I replaced my stator trigger and switch boxes tried a set of coils new plugs and wires I watched this video and almost ordered 2 brand new CDI ones glad I read the comments have you found the issue yet?
No, my next step was trigger, but that didn’t work for you?? Not sure what to do! If it is the ECU I may just live with the problem
Sounds like the pressure regulator or electric pump.
Ok thanks! I will look into those. I don’t know anything about them
That's a classic ECU issue. Simons Motor Sports can rebuild it like new for around $600.00
Ok gotcha. I’m going to call bills marine and see if they can get it fixed. Might be a September fix when fishing is terrible
How much was the VR? Iv seen some from 15$ to $400
$158. Link should be in my video description.
I went to Ebay and paid $17.50
On the Mercury engine charging and ignition systems:
- Do not use AGM or Maintenance Free batteries.
-Use a heavy coating of a good heat sink compound on the back side of the regulator before bolting it in place.
Appreciate the help!
Why no AGM?
@@coleritchie5402They require specific charging voltage. Only ECU controlled alternators on modern engines can modulate output.
When you are install the rectifier, does it make a difference which side faces up?
Which side of the rectifier do you put the heat sink compound? Why is this necessary
Any updates?
No, haven’t had a chance to work on it. Also, I’m not really sure what to try. I’m hearing ECU replacement, which sucks.
3 months later, have you gotten a new ECU? Same problem here.
😂 no, I couldn’t stop fishing long enough. September will be the month because fishing is terrible in Oklahoma
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing Ha, nice. Well I just got a used boat and it's been having issues. Found out an ignition coil was bad, and now I'm checking the voltage regulators and stator. Apparently the battery can affect it?
I could see that, but not real sure. Good luck with the new boat and i will let you know when mine is fixed.
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing thanks. Just did some multimeter readings. There were 3 readings for the trigger to be max 1400 ohms, and one reading was 1500. Not sure how much it'll affect it.
Mine acted similiary. I changed parts for 3 months. Ended up being the ecu. Does it act worse after its hot?
Dang! I’m really hoping it isn’t ECU. It is really hard to pin point but I feel like it happens more when I first get on the water. A lot of times I have to stop and either turn it off or rev it in neutral for awhile. Frustrating
@@PrestigeWorldwideFishing ok most of the time electronic problems will get worse as the engine builds heat. (ecu. swith box, trigger etc)... you may have a flooding problem.... somthing cheap to try is spark plugs if you havnt changed them recently. plugs may not be the cause but i like to eliminate them early in the process because they are cheap and easy.
I probably should of said this in the video, because I thought the same thing. I have changed plugs, new stator, new fuel lines, fuel filter and water pump. It still could be fuel related but i wouldn’t t think so after changing all of that. Do you think it could be a trigger?
Hi guys,
Unfortunately, after replacing both voltage regulators, I’m still having the same problem. Does anyone think it could be a trigger? Hoping it isn’t ECU. Thanks guys!
Brandon
Im no professional but from what iv seen the trigger either works or it dont. Have you checked voltage to the switch boxes? Where are you located?
Ok gotcha. I haven’t checked voltage yet. I’m in Tulsa area
I have seen low voltage even after replacing the stator, due to weak magnets. So even though your stator is new id check the voltage
Ok I will. Thank you so much for the help!
Hey the as you know by now the voltage regulator won’t effect how the motor preforms much it’s job is to turn the ac current from the stator to DC current to charge the battery and it also has a grey wire coming out the top for your tachometer . So I would check that you have spark on all 6 cylinders before you do anything else and make sure your spark plugs aren’t fouled out , if there are all good I would check fuel system
Sounds like the stator.
Stator was replaced prior to the video. It was a bad fuel driver in the ECU
Sounds like a carb issue
It was the ECU
