The DEATH GUARD Legion in the HORUS HERESY | Legion XIV: Origins | Warhammer Lore

- The Death Guard may be crusty plague marines in 40k, but they started out as the honourable Dusk Raiders, and as their Primarch Mortarion slowly squeezed out the last of the Terran legionnaires in favour of his brutal Barbarans, their fall to Chaos began.

I like how every Primarch is described as "Not fitting in with the other Primarchs"
It's like did they all just think the others were friends?
They were all drafted into the crusade decades, some of them centuries apart from each other, but never really got to talk to each other outside of joint military operations. If you get recruited into a very exclusive little club, but the club never actually meets, it's an easy mistake to assume.
I’ve heard Horus and Hawkboy were quite good lads.
It’s Morty, Angron and Kurze who had… well… no friends
Fuck even that FUCKING NEEEERD MAGNUS was on good terms with most of his bros… appart from Morty and Leman because pSyKeRs bAd ‘N sHiT.
From my understanding many of them DID fit in and have friends. Horus, Sanguinius, Fulgrim, Robite G and about 1/3rd of them.
I like to think of all of them as being Goob in Meet the Robinson’s
@@ogrillion_games”Hey Morty, wanna purge some Xenos together?”
(Internal) _THEY HATED ME_
Say the line Ian...
huh... this history of this legion like all the legions starts on the unification wars on terra...
YAY!
"...Old Earth." Pure swerved!
If I had a nickel for every time the emperor intervened to save a Primarchs life against said Primarchs wishes, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a-lot, but its weird that it happened twice
Who is the other one?
@@intermarer9145 Angron
@@intermarer9145 Angron who has the Opposite of Kratos origin story. Overwhelming odds and he wishes to stay and die instead of receive the power and rank of primarch. But no one denies the emperor. He was swept away against his will. Later he returns and sees the devastation and to top it off his original people regard him as traitorous. They were of the first to feel the wrath of the Butchers Nails
Mortarion's Champion of the Downtrodden angle is a very interesting and underplayed aspect that seems to get overshadowed by his anti-psyker fervor. It'd be interesting to know how he'd interact with some of his brothers with sort of similar outlooks, like Corax.
Mortarion was one of the less well-written Primarchs of the Heresy. Chris Wraight did everything he could, but it definitely didn't help, that James Swallow wrote his main book.
He became everything he said he hated
@@Kristian.B.Kristiansen Yeah James very clearly wanted Garro to look cool in comparison to mortarion and while i do like buried dagger pale king shows of why mortarion has the potential to be the most interesting primarch.
I wish to learn more about Mortarion's relationship with Curze.
A loyalist Dusk Raider company, made up of surviving Old Albian veterans and the initiates hastily created during the Heresy, would make for an interesting army to build on the tabletop. Once again bearing the red right hand, a symbol not just of their loyalty to the Emperor, but the shame they share by association with their traitorous kin from Barbaras.
I was thinking about doing just that in my HH army but went 3rd legion traitor for the paint scheme and modding. However the lore for the dusk raiders is way beteerr
I had started making an army just like this several years ago. The plan was to make an army of loyalist betrayed at istvaan, a mix of the 4 traitor legions but mostly of death guard who have started repainting their armour to that of the dusk raiders. I was also using the, at the time, new 40K death guard models, cleaned up to add more variation in the troops.
Never ended up getting anywhere, between the price of Forgeworld and my inability to focus on one project though. Might get back to it with heresy 2.0
I like the idea of making some Ironside warriors of Old Albia for a Unification Wars game
@@kieranbasham2678 3d printing can cover pretty much everything you'd find on Forgeworld, and for much cheaper.
I could listen to Ian tell these stories all day long. I love his colourful style and despite the grim subject matter his narration is full of heart. Keep doing what you're doing, Ian, we all love it!
The deathguard have some of the most interesting looking units. Mortarian is definitely going to have a run for his money when Angron shows up though
Angron model just got revealed by GW. Looks great
IM NEW TO THE LORE..DO THE CHAOS PEEPS FIGHT EACH OTHER TOO?
@@RawMaterialENT Yep, quite a lot of the time, especially if the warbands/legions involved serve rival gods. In fact, there was a set of Legion Wars in the Eye of Terror after the Heresy which lasted for centuries and saw a good few of the legions broken apart or otherwise changed beyond all recognition.
@@RawMaterialENT Oh yeah. Like all the time. More often then they unite together. Whether it's chaos war bands fighting each other, the traitor legions fighting other legions, and even fighting within the structure of those groups. The most united is the black legion and red corsairs. But there is even fighting within the groups. After all they're...Chaos lol.
This can also happen within the Imperium. Like when the Space Wolves fought the Grey knights. It's basically like the tabletop game. Anybody can fight anybody. Some groups are less likely to fight each other, but it still happens all the time.
@@RawMaterialENT mortarion and perturabo's legions fought the war of rust and ruin. It was probably one of the more epic single battles between traitors
In the book "Visions of Heresy" there is an alternate paint scheme for the DG that is dark green all over (with spiked helmets). I'd love to see someone do that scheme for a Veteran unit.
Visions of heresy all legion were not quite uniform, specifically the sons of horus, where one of the illustrations they year grey and have red leather gauntlets
the old plague marines used to be badass , the modern DG look a bit naff with all the branches and nurglings bells everywhere etc looking cartoonty whereas old plague marines were grim asf world war 1 trench warfare looking chaos marines .
@@themachine7534 I owned the old Metal PM back in the 90s. They were awesome. Not as over done as the current lot.
@@horuslupercal9936 agreed warmaster us 30' somethings remember the good ol' lore and models /art .
Man the artist of the Baneblade at 7:58 really took some artistic liberties with the scale 😁
Every day we creep closer to the greatest legion; the bearers of the Word, the heralds of the Dark Gods, the Saviours of the Souls of Mankind.
Buzzing mate.
You're not talking about my loyalist Word Bearers are you?
Very well written. The ending was excellent.
Honey get the expensive wine, Ian's latest legion lore video just dropped 🍷
I have listened to this entire series multiple times now. It's both informative and soothing.
I love how Ian uses a different word for "Bad thing happened" when the Primarchs were scattered in every one of these videos
Garro and the 70 are some of my favorite characters.
When Mortarion gives in to Nurgle, I always think of the 1986 Transformers Movie when Megatron gives in to Unicron. Another awesome video!
I personally am reminded more about the infamous Eclipse from the Berserk manga series.
I am huge fan of your channel. I just recently discovered it and I’m truly glad that I have.
I got into 40k in the 8th edition. My army was space marine, specifically DA. But I didn’t feel like I really carried about them or their primarch.
After your videos, you really put in so much effort and info that I feel like I am invested. So far, I only see myself as a person in Ferrus Manus and so, for the time being, I’m claiming the iron hands.
But I do like Fulgrim, but until I see a legion that truly encompasses who I am, I’m loyal to the emperor!
i was waiting for this since legion 1.
Idem.
Gotta say, the candle was a nice touch on this one.
I do like the shirt matching with each legion. Well done sir.
Been waiting for my favorite legion
Ah, Mortarion’s smelly boys. Arguably one of the most competent of the Traitor legions. Mortarion was basically Horus’ 2nd in command by the late heresy.
Poor perturabo. Always ignored, even in rebellion
@@normtrooper4392 That's kind of his thing I suppose. Guess that's why he quit the siege halfway through.
@normtrooper4392 He is vastly competent and unappreciated but he also should have grown a pair and either said something to Horus directly about being upset or blackmailed him when he announced Morty as the new Grand Marshall of the siege.
*Actual footage. : ) nice touch.
I thought that was hilarious to XD
Just wanted to say these style of videos for the hours heresy are awesome !!! I personally only read all the books relating to the word bearers so its quite good getting informative summary on what happened to each legion. Keep it up 😎👍
Okay, I like this one, because it's not just a "Legion is known for trait in 40K, turns out it was created with that trait set to about 5 and then they find their Primarch who grew up in a setting that inculcated him in that Trait and when he takes command of the Legion, their gimmick trait gets cranked up to 11."
Mortarion: Our father is full of shit.
Jaghatai Khan: So are you.
I am really enjoying your legion series.
6:13 , damn, so that game is still played thousands of years into the future..
The final showdown of Garro and Mortarion is about to happen. No matter if Garro dies or survives, it was the biggest pleasure to see his journey.
5:50 gotta say of mortarion looks badass in this rendition
I love the DG and this was a n9celt done video to learn more about them. I'm currently building a loyalist DG for HH that I can also use as a Custom Chapters in 40K. This filled in some gaps. Rock On.
Finally, we get Thousand Sons next week!

Mortarion: KHANNNNN!
LOL :p
Channel intro theme: Black Rainbows (Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio)
that last slide of Morty vs The Khan is so sick. The Khan is the best.
This is an awesome video. My favourite legions. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
I'd like stories about Horus befriending the weirdo primarchs.
Watched for that helmet I've never seen that helmet on the video picture before, stay because I have a loyalist Mortarion story that I had forgotten about and I need the refresher (...and also because the video is good too).
I don't play HH but still enjoy these videos, keep it up!
Great video on my favorite Chaos faction!
Before these videos I never really understood the timeline. I thought the Unification Wars was in the far past (i.e. 20k), followed by the Golden Age, and then the Primarchs and Crusade. But it's all squished right in there.
Thanks
Oh yeah, Unification, the Solar System, the Great Crusade and the Heresy all happen in around 250-300 years
You can't really recruit an entire legion from the UK and be shocked when they start worshipping nurgle. rare unforced error for big E there
That’s my boys! And my favorite pre-heresy colour scheme!
Great, now I wanna do a loyalist 30k British army of these guys, Union Jack's and all.
Did some sisters of battle red white & blue for my team's journey in Europe last season 🤷♂️🤦♂️
i’ve been painting my Marines army as Dusk raiders pretending they’re loyalists that split off and kept to the old ways after the introduction of mortarian
Im not really upset about this, not at all. But seriously. How many right hands does this "emperor" character have? I feel like i have heard that statement too often even for it to be one right and one left hand.
(absolutely adore this series btw
Thanks for the video.
I never understood mortarions reasons compared to Some others. It wasn’t like with angron where he stole him away and left his soldiers to die. Mortartion failed and the emperor had to pick up his slack. Being distrustful of the warp is sensible but surely he would have known how helpful it would have been to fight demons etc also for his hatred of tyrants in barbarus and the emperor ,he remade Barbarus and put himself at the top like his old necrodaddy was
the emperor pushed mortarion into a fight he was not ready nor prepared for and tricked him into servitut again...
the emperor keep the existence of demons a secret plus mortarion hated magic because that was what kept him and his people under control .. so there was really no motivation for him to use magic ...
and the mortarion from the beginning of the crusade is not the same person as the mortarion who created The Plague Planet ... by that time he was a daemon primarch and was completely corrupted...
Another great summary. Looking forward to seeing your shirt for XV.
The time has come to put on a grey shirt and add a pinch of green Nurgle lights :)
I like how you say 'in this *little* series' like bruh what's the longer version look like?
Been waiting for this one! Thank you
cant wait for the word bearers video
Love these videos and all the art work in them.
"He taught them Warcraft"... no wonder Mortarion is known as the sweatiest Primarch, that neeeeerd. :D
so while I love all the space marine content. can we get some xenos episodes? like the fact that we havnt discussed that orks paint their vehicles red because they beleive it makes them faster, and it actually does because they believe it hard enough. gotta love da boyz
Ian could you do a Reading recomendation list for prople that want to learn about each of the factions and sub factions. For example. Top 5 book to start reading about the black legion or top 5 books to start reading tau
Hail fellow sons and daughters of barbarus
I love these vidoes
Nor for nothing, but Garro is my single favorite character in 30K or 40K. Garro is the stuff.....
Has there ever been a game system or any models for the Unification Wars? Or are they just super fluff? Thanks for the video, good as always.
The Red Right Hand being one of many Nick Cave references in Warhammer …
These unnamable overlords sound an awful lot like dark eldar
It's basically confirmed that they're actually nurgle worshipping minor xenos
Great video as ever!
Take my 👍 right now!
legion 14 nice were close to finish
You could say, it was a slow, steady rot of decay.
My favourite legion did not make it into the play list. So sad
I'm a big fan of the Death Guard; they were my very first army, and they're my current project, so I gotta say, the Death Guard have a really bad lore.
Like, it feels like two different stories slapped together, and either story would be great, on its own, but both just bring the whole thing down.
Morty's antifascist stance reflected in the dusk raiders traditions is an interesting concept when the universe is inherently tyrannical, but then suddenly Nurgle and that whole subplot and tone gets lost.
The DG and Mortarion have really cool ideas scattered across some novels and codex entries, but the vast majority of BL writers have done a terrible job with the legion. Unsurprised, as they can't seem to write Chaos well whatsoever.
I'm still on the fence. White Scars or Death Guard?
Sometimes I wish I could give a video ten thumbs up
Word Bearers next?
🐻Word Bears!🐻
Mortarion, says he is for the downtrodden, but ultimately was a big manchild because his revenge was stolen from him. Seems noble at first but actually wasnt
nope he was not, the point is he was against tyrants and the emperor is clearly one.
@@livanbard He's a petulant manchild like the majority of the traitor Primarchs.
"Buhuhuhu, Daddy saved my dumb ass and stole my kill, buhuhu...."
Jaghatai Khan roasting him, during the Battle of Terra, was spot on.
Most corpse worshippers will call traitor primarchs man children because of their "petty" gripes with the emperor. The thing is though, Mortarion hated the emperor for other reasons, mainly that he essentially made Mortarion's war invalid. If you worked for decades for something, and then somebody effortlessly makes all your victories null, I think some resentment is understandable.
"Taciturn" is pronounced "TASS-i-turn". The 'c' is pronounced like an 's', not a 'k'.
I'm guessing Ian is using Latin pronunciation where Cs are pronounced like Ks?
@@nekrataali Ian is less guilty than most WH40K UA-camrs with regards to pronouncing both in-universe words and just everyday words. Obviously Majorkill is atrocious and can barely speak English, but I can tell that most UA-camrs have either only read certain words and never said them out loud before. You'd think they'd just pull up this very site really quick, or Google translate, and force it to pronounce the word for them so they don't sound dumb, but they don't.
I noticed that here--what's funny is that the next video of his that autoplayed after this one (I forget which) he pronounced it correctly.
Look up the pronunciation of taciturn.
On TT, they look cool. In lore, their primarch was a crybaby who instead of having an ironclad unyielding willpower, surrendered to chaos because he was scared of Nurgle. He literally exhanged a horrific father to an indifferent father to a nightmarish father. I hope the Emperor cast his' soul to oblivion next time. That would greatly satisfy me.
Mortarion isn't actually like that, it's just his lore is scant spread across almost 30 years of content. Most people think he and Perturabo, etc are whiny so and sos. They're not. But it's nigh impossible to read everything about a special character unless they're brand new and have like two new books lol.
I'm a bit confused about the use of the word ceremide. What do you mean by it because I think you are not using it in it's true meaning.
'Ceramite' is a made-up material used in armour in 40k. It's meant to be a mix of metallic and ceramic compounds.
@@ArbitorIan thanks for clearing that up, really loving this series.
There's a rumor that Morty is going to be redeemed.
Big hint at it in godblight, yeah.
That would suck, honestly.
@@alfieingrouille1528 I just personally would not like that change to his character.
✌️💚
So the plague-ridden Death Guard originated in 'Albia'? i.e. Great Britain? Now if that isn't satire, I don't know what is 😹
And given the UK's pandemic response, it seems prescient...
