    I thought I should leave a comment having watched 10 episodes on the trott. Absolutely fantastic attention to detail.I have too many hobbies and am interested in too many things but I am going to have to build this model after 5 decades of Airfix kit modelling absence!!
    I will need your help in securing all the tools, paints and glues necessary for a successful build. Thanks for all your hard work and appreciate your occasional frustration.

    Hi Nigel, great to see this next episode in your big Spitfire build. You've put alot of work into this and it's looking splendid but it's also made me rather glad that I shall build mine buttoned up except for the canopy and entry door.
    Keep at it. Looking forward to part #11

    Brilliant work Nigel, just enjoy watching everything you do. I especially enjoy watching the intricate work and your airbrush technique is so easy to understand after your original for Ron airbrush tutorial I adopted your method, I use the bartsharp 186 and it works well. The spitfire is really taking shape now. 👍

    ah yes - making the engine pop out... nice work, and great paint tips... thanks for all the details here nigel.. I've seen people build this kit in a week - can't see how without lots of rushed details...

    Hi Nigel, all the best for the New Year. Imperial War Museum have a video about Merlins up, not sure how original theirs example is but the rocker covers are just like the ones you produce at the end of your video. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Nigel, it may have been mentioned before but it is the usual place in the port wing root on the C wing for the camera gun, if a fuel cooler is not installed. Like your builds and agree that it is sometimes easier to do some sub assemblies out of order so the parts are ready when needed. Keep up the good work, well done and although I have now got the Airfix kit I am looking forward to the Kotare Mk1 when it arrives

    Love the work Nigel. One thing about the Rolls Royce name on the engine block. I just watched a short You Tube video from the Imperial War Museum called Why the Merlin engine was essential to the war and noticed that the Rolls Royce plate on the display is actually using white lettering, not red. There are actually 6 red plates though (presumably covering the pistons?? - I know nothing about engines!!!) Also noticed that the name plate seemed to have fairly flat lettering. In fact it almost looks like someone used a big Dymo tape and stuck it on the block! Anyhoo, you can see what I'm saying just 30 seconds into the video. They don't mention which version of the engine is on display so it may have had red lettering in a later variant. Just thought you might want/need to check if the red lettering is correct.

    This is why the Tamiya Spitfire is a better bet the undercarriage and the tail wheel have metal pins reinforcing them control surfaces attachment points are metal and a bit of photo etch here and there is no need to buy extra after market . To me being a bit smaller is an advantage . You can replace the poor decals easily enough ; not expensive . Airfix have to look at multi media for premium kits ; like this .

    If it fell together all by itself there'd be no fun in it would there? 😉 More great progress, Nige, I'm loving it.

    The Headrest was removed during the Mk.IX production run (Modification 662). Ones with them fitted are likely ‘early’ series and converted from the MK.V fuselages rather than entirely new built machines. How true the reason I read for the deletion of them is I cant vouch for but I do recall reading that it was an emergency egress issue whether bailing out or after ditching some parts of the pilots various web straps becoming hooked around the bottom of the headrest and trapping the pilot half in and half out of the falling/sinking Spitfire thus taking the pilot down with it to their shared doom.

    Airscale are certainly doing a very good ip but I believe that HGW are producing a seat belt. The ip is certainly worth getting and is incredible value for money as the kit part, whilst ok, lets the model down as there is a very obvious gap in the (2 part) panel which the Airfix kit fails to replicate. In 1/24 it’s very obvious 😢.

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  Рік тому +1

      Airscale are also producing seatbelts. I haven't seen them, but would like to..

    So if you have to modify the engine to make the cowlings fit what is it you would need to do to shrink the engine?

    I'm enjoying watching the build Nigel and will get back into modelling, starting with this kit. Thinking about the propeller tips in yellow, would the paint have been applied over black in real life ? Everyone uses a white undercoat for models to bring up the colour but would the yellow have been subdued on the real aircraft ? Just a thought.
