The British Army of the Rhine was certainly very large and powerful. You can see how much the Queen loves her armed forces and even now, she always has a special smile when she sees them.

Indeed - so true but by then the MOD were planning the decimation of Regiments , making cuts and so forth . It seems that the Head of the Armed Forces was “unable” to secure our Services and their future ? Something which was , once upon a time , under previous Heads - was unthinkable?

I was there that day, in the windmill behind the Queen as part of the parade control team in a very minor role on the telephone relaying messages from the on the ground traffic controller. It went off without a hitch, but the dress rehearsal the day before there was lots of kerfuffle with the tanks getting all bunched up, and slowing down. Signalman Pludek 955 2 Squadron 4Div HQ and Sig Regt , i did see the back of the Queens head, when allowed to look out after the march past had finished. What a day, and its taken me 43 years to see this....

The Queen also inspected a similar parade at Sennelager in 1965 - during her first visit to Germany after the War. The whole of 20th Armoured Brigade drove past on a very hot day with huge clouds of dust making a very impressive sight.

Stayed at home in Detmold and watched it on the telly, stuffing myself with Apfelkuechen and cream. I remember my Dad, a Gazelle pilot, grumbing because the aircrew had to wear those plastic working dress belts which were a fire hazard, instead of the cotton web 58 belts.

Just came across this little gem. I was in B squadron the blues and royals and I was on this parade. Anyone else who was there remember the guy who was in charge of the parade? I think his C/S was seagull. Everyone on the parade was on the same radio frequency, and someone started transmitting “ I’m F*****g sick of this because on one of the rehearsals it was chucking it down. So “ seagull pipes up hello all stations switch to standby { remember that on a C 42 ?} So this guy pipes up “ it’s ok for you seagull your not getting f*****g wet, “ Happy days.

54 Sqn RCT We built the hill of Stones for them to watch from,Tipping 0600hrs till 2100hrs for months round and round in circles. I Remember the 30 centigrade dust cobbled roads, Vehicles being painted again and again because the Helicopters would practice and blow dust all over the wet paint and the Stable showers. Joy but I would live it again for the lads of C Troop.

Wonder what the Germans thought( if they thought at all ). The irony of it all. Here's a Monarch, from a historical ruling house, an ancestor of their last Kaiser & monarchy, with her husband, also a German from a German royal family, watching a parade of military might over an ancestral homeland her forces helped defeat. By the way, this same British monarch who had relatives, who had fought against her armed forces, in the last war, which brought her to this spot on this particular day!! Talk about unforeseen consequences!!

Perfect day for the "Warsaw Pact" to launch an invasion! But don't forget that the Germans? were getting paid to divulge all the NATO forces movements. They even knew the names of the RAF pilots & their families.
