One of the greatest collection of future stars on an NCAA court ever.
The Houston teams, known as phi slama jama, made the final four 3 times in a row in 82, 83, and 84, and made it to the championship game twice in a row in '83 and '84.
Two of their players (clyde Drexler & Akeem Olajuwon) teamed up in the NBA to win 2 championships.
If Drexler didn't leave early, the '84 Houston team would have won it all.
Actually Drexler wasn’t there for the first Rockets championship in 1994. He was still playing in Portland. But in 1995 he was on the repeat team, thanks to a mid-season trade, and did win one with his old team mate Hakeem.
Jordan hit the game winner but this was James Worthy's night. He was awesome. Ewing was awesome, a freshman in the title game. What a great championship. Has to be a top 5 ever final game.
Worthy was a superstar in his college days
Wasnt to bad in the pro's either😁
he was a hall of fame big game player in the pros too game 7 of 1988 finals he scored 36 pts-16 rbs winning finals mvp,the bigger the game the better james played,he torched rodman and salley that game
We are WORTHY!
He did a great job at lakers as well, however he may have performed even better in a different team without Kareem and Magic.. just saying
Man, Ewing was a grown ass man even back then
stupid goal tending over and over thou
@@vegasraiderspetef9883 Thompson claims he told Ewing to take down everything that came up. Dumb move, but plausible because Ewing eventually stopped the more obvious goaltends.
@@TTFMjock "Georgetown coach John Thompson ordered Ewing to 'make his presence known' on defense and to not worry about goaltending calls when attempting to block shots."
Lmao funny I said the same thing wen he stood up n high fived his teammates lol
One of the best college basketball games ever.
Wish MJ got to play with Worthy at some point in the NBA
I'm just glad Worthy made it into the HOF as well a an all-time Top 50 selection because his career regular season numbers didn't quite reflect it (he was mainly the 3rd option for crying out loud-lol!!!), but when the playoffs came around he was THE GO-TO MAN on offense and in his prime only the very best defensively could ever contain him (or tried to, haha). What he did in the '88 finals against Detroit is now the stuff of legend. Made Magic look so damn good all those years...
;-)
the bigger the game the more he stepped up theyre werent alot of shots playing with magic kareem etc...1988 nba finals mvp torching rodman and salley...BIG Game James
That James Worthy dunk
Worthy, Floyd, Jordan, Perkins and Ewing -- wow, future NBA all-stars for the NCAA finals. What a great match up. Also the sportscaster Brent Musburger was great -- pleasant to watch -- love for the game, truly respecting both sides of players regardless of color or where they came from.
the quality of play in this game was really high
Jordan, Worthy, Perkins. That UNC team was loaded.
8:30 tough layup to set up the game winning shot
The game winner was great but that left high layup gets overlooked. Incredible touch.
3HOF, 4 All Stars and 1 GOAT, best line of talent ever in the championship game.
Sleeping Sam too.
Ewing and Floyd played really well. Amazing game.
I still love this game. I watched it at Harrisons restaurant at the bottom of the stairs downtown Franklin street in Chapel Hill.
MJ, Worthy, Ewing, and Sleepy Brown all played in this game, but also playing was Sam Perkins, another longtime future NBA player. That last play where MJ got the shot is what made Dean Smith a legend...he figured that Worthy and Perkins would be guarded, and so he drew up a play for Jordan.
Ewing was a monster but Worthy was unstoppable. Imagine if Worthy and Jordan played together their whole career
The 80’s was the best decade for the sport of basketball in general!
maybe the NFL too.
BY FAR AND AWAY!!!!!
College basketball was so much better then. Nobody ever missed a shot, as this video shows.
Gastonia, NC showing up big!
James Worthy.....big game James..he played his ass off in this game.....my favorite player while playing in high school...wore #42 because of Worthy, one of the 20 greatest players of all time, nobody could guard his first step, quickest in the history of the league
scorpionJB And Sleepy Floyd was his HS rival! It was fitting that they hooked up in this classic! Worthy at Ashbrook and Floyd at Hunter Huss and they both were on the All-American first team that season ('82)
Jordan been stealing ships away from Ewing since college
Although there have been many great tournament games since this one, I seriously doubt there will ever be one to match the high level of play that was reached in this one. Of course a lot of that had to do with the maturity of the players. College basketball has suffered since the dawn of the one and done. It's still exciting to watch, but it will never approach anything like this. There were players that left early. Magic and Isiah were sophomores, but they were transcendent players. Jordan and Ewing were freshman in this game, but players like that don't come around too often. Just imagine how great some of Calipari's Wildcat teams would have been if some of those guys had stayed at least until their junior year. That would be scary. Then again, you can't blame them for leaving. The money to be made is just too tempting.
Dean Smith and John Thompson were both noted for the high percentage of their players that actually stuck around to get a degree. MJ didn't get his on schedule, but he did complete his BA in Geography in 1986. I love it that Dean Smith was still on the faculty when Jordan graduated.
@@haplessasshole9615 That's ancient history.
Worthy was and is still one of my favorites players of all time, he was definitely the player of THIS game.
Second NCAA championship game I ever watched! I was 10 and in fourth grade! It's still to this day one of the five best finals ever! James Worthy was unstoppable; Carolina would not have won without him, he had an answer for everything Georgetown did that night! Jordan played well but Worthy was a man-child! March Madness is sports' greatest event by far, will never be equaled! Oh and before I forget - Fred Brown's infamous pass!
This game has 4 all time NBA platers, 2 on each side.
Jordan, Worthy, Ewing, Sleepy Floyd
This was an all time game.
Sleeping Sam too.
Yes it was.
This 5 year period was to me by far the greatest collection of college> pro talent ever.
1979-1984. The greatest collection of college to pro talent ever.
Rename to Patrick Ewing goaltending highlights
Georgetown coach John Thompson ordered Ewing to "make his presence known" on defense and to not worry about goaltending calls when attempting to block shots.
I doubt we will ever see such a collection of players like this on the court at the same time again (in college that is). This was the greatest decade of college basketball.
You can say that again. This is still the best championship game I've seen in terms of quality of play. You'll never see the teams like the 84-85 Hoyas or the 90-91 Runnin Rebels again. Both those teams ended up losing, but if you watched them throughout the season, they just leveled the competition.
I remember both of those teams and they were great. Georgetown actually had a shot at winning 3 of the 4 years Ewing was there. If not for the crazy ending his freshmen year and his senior year against villanova. I think the shot clock got them against villanova, I think it was 45 seconds then (not sure about that).
I think the UNLV may have been a little over confident in their rematch with Duke, I mean they beat them like a drum the year before with pretty much the same players on both teams.
I wish the ncaa would make players stay at least 2 years before they turn pro, although I understand why the players leave.
There was no shot clock in that 85 game. That's the only reason Georgetown lost. Georgetown had you beat before tipoff. Teams were of scared of them. That 85 team would have been even more dominant had Michael Graham been on the team. The UNLV team that beat Duke in 90 was even better the following year, but hubris is a bitch. I agree, at least two years. The game is not as physical as it was once. It's not like they're going to get hurt. You drove to the basketball on the Hoyas and you were slammed to the ground. That's how the Big East was. Georgetown contested almost every shot. You just don't see that anymore. Villanova barely missed a shot and they still only won by two, but that's why they play the game.
Yep your right the Hoyas were something, I also think about those Houston teams in 83' & 84' never won a title but what they would have done in today's tournament. Back then you had to play both ends of the court and it was a lot more physical. I guess we can look back an appreciate the fact that we got to watch college basketball's best years (or well that's just my opinion).
@@johnblack8036 two major differences with Georgetown '85 and Vegas '91: 1) strength of schedule which isn't even debatable - Georgetown played in what was at that time the best conference in America (Big East, by far) and Vegas in the Big West! And Vegas only played 2 quality teams (Arkansas & Michigan State) outside their league in '91! 2) the differences in quality at center - Patrick Ewing, George Ackles - that's a laugh and a half! Vegas had a more complete center in '90 David Butler - he neutralized Laettner because he could play both ends and had good lateral movement! Ackles in '91 was slow and Laettner ate him alive! In the post and on the perimeter! Lastly, Nova and Georgetown knew each other inside and out, which was the reason that '85 final was tight! 'Nova unlike all others wasn't afraid to look GTown straight in the eye! '91 Vegas - hadn't seen Duke in almost a yr and Duke was a totally diff team along with an added athlete in Grant Hill and Vegas wasn't used to a tight game in the second half! I remember the longer Duke stayed close, Vegas started to play frantic! Oh and I forgot, '85 Georgetown better defensively as a unit! They suffocated the life out of u offensively! Vegas was great offensively but Stacey Augmon was their only consistent defender and that was glaring once Vegas got tested (against G'Town in second round and then Duke)! Overall '85 Georgetown better!
One of the best basketball games I ever got a chance to watch. I was 14 years old. It was the first sports wager I ever made. I lost! Sleepy, Ewing, MJ, Worthy, Perk, bench riders Wingate and Williams. Great game!
I like the part when Ewing goal-tended.
TSVU.
A star is born and the legend begins his journey to becoming the greatest of all time!
The all time 3 college big men of Pat Ewing, Akeem, Ralph Sampson
Legendary college game rivalries between the big men..
This game made Jordan a legend, I think the basketball world owes a great deal of thanks to Michael’s brother Larry for challenging him to compete to be the best player of all time.
Wilt and Bill were better in college. Bill Walton and Kareem as well...
@twelthstreetent The three point line was in part time that next year but didn't go into full effect until 1986!!
Fred Brown and Chris Webber=Coach Smith's success
psadpoiafsdf Fab Five to me talent -wise best college basketball team never to win; '83 Houston, '85 Georgetown, '08 Memphis and '91 Vegas honorable mention
While we're at it we should throw in there Roy's first in 2005! When Allen Ray of Villanova got called for the "PHANTOM" travel in the Sweet 16! Everybody always talks about how great '05 Carolina was after they beat a loaded Illinois team but they should thank that referee in Syracuse for that walk call! If u watch the replay he (Ray) got seriously hacked and then the official added insult with that bogus, and it was a completely bogus whistle
Carolina needs to thank the higher powers; for three of their titles were gift-wrapped
Imagine If Chris Webber Played For The Tar Heels
It's so weird that the NCAA didn't add the 3 point line until 86-87 when it was part of the NBA since 1980.
Man.. Mj and worthy collected 9 championships combined after college.
Jordan Had 6 With The Bulls
Ewing and Worthy were men amongst little boys.
Wow! I would've liked to see that game live!
I did and it was a great one. I was rooting for Georgetown, though, so I didn't like the result. I believe it was the last time I rooted again MJ.
Great Video. This one is for all the Carolina fans.
🙌🏾🙌🏾 worthy
Could be the greatest basketball game ever played. 💪
Damn, was James Worthy born with that beard?
I went to this game and I hardly remember the Saturday games...we hit Bourbon Street and tore it up. This one was a definite classic. The goaltendings would have intimidated a lot of teams but not North Carolina and those guys. Jimmy Black was the floor leader for the Heels and took care of the ball........Memorable ending....The traffic getting outta there was also "lotsa fun".......
College Basketball used to be SO MUCH BETTER in the 80s and 90s.
That Number 23 has potential
damn i know they whooped his ass in the locker room for that last pass lmao
Yeah Ewing lost that game with the goal tending, but Jordan and Worthy were giving us a little foreshadowing of years to come.
Fred Brown probably still have nightmares about this game.
TheDarkRoomATL probably. They won in 1984, which helps I'm sure
It's been 35 years and he won a title two years later. Pretty sure he's moved on.
Daniel Goss true but damn that was still a bad choke moment for him he had the shot
Fred Brown gets way too much flack when he shouldn't have had the ball in the first place! Why Sleepy Floyd didn't orchestrate that final possession has always baffled me! If John Thompson always claimed he didn't want to allow Carolina to set up defensively he should have it already planned for Floyd to have the ball before Jordan's shot!
Your best and most experienced guard always should have the ball in their possession in that crucial of a moment
I wish I was alive for the 80s. almost all of the championship games were wire games or upsets
More interesting than the 2014 NBA finals.
+Pierre Louis lol
How bout the 2016 finals
That no.23 guy in North Carolina will become the G.O.A.T
It was really Ewing versus an NBA team
Worthy was amazing, he even MIND MELDED Fred Brown, forcing him to, with the game on the line, thrown the ball to the opposite team.
Carolina has won, at the end of games, with these strange plays. Like Michigan calling time out at the end when they has NONE. Crazy stuff.
That first Worthy dunk over sleepy floyd
Dam. Disrespectful 😂
Sub'd just because of this upload. Great stuff man thanks!
What many aren't aware of was that after Worthy was fouled after Brown's errand pass, Dean Smith instructed him to purposely miss those two free throws. I guess Dean knew it was an inadvertent gift to them, and felt they weren't worthy (no intended) of the free throws (no pun intended again). Very classy on his part.
Say what?
im like waiting on jordan to start busting out a 60 point game and all i hear is WORTHY! EWING...another goaltending! lol those two were killing though
Jordan Actually Did Have An 60 Point Game And It Was In 1990 Against The Cavaliers In Which Jordan 69 Points
I cried when my Hoyas lost.
This was probably one of the best and most exciting NCAA basketball championship games ever played. Georgetown probably should have won--mental error. Ewing was unbelievable in this game--one of his best in the 4 years at Georgetown. Sleepy Floyd's up fake then double clutch jumper in the lane was one of the best plays of the game. Carolina would have been blown out w/o Worthy.
Don't be dissing the Beard of Mr. Big Game James! lol
The NCAA allowed the Southeast Conference to experiment with 3-pointers in 1980-81 and the rest of the College conferences followed suit within the next two seasons.
7:25 just filthy.
That last pass by Fred Brown -_-
nervous
He was only a sophomore and had never played the point up to that point! There's no doubt that last possession he wasn't comfortable being out of position! Eric Smith and Sleepy Floyd had alternated at the point for the Hoyas! That was a coaching mishap! Brown should not have been running that play especially with natl championship on the line
Which is why John Thompson never blamed him for it!
MJ the undisputed GOAT!!!
Without Worthy playing so well Jordan never gets a shot at that go ahead jumper.
nice upload man
dam worthy owned!
If they Would Have Had The Three Point Line.. It Probably Would've Been A Different Result Or Higher Score & Patrick Ewing Had Such A Pure Shot For A Big Man Which Is Missing In Todays Game - We Hardly See two or Three Great Players On One Team That Can Dominate a Game Anymore
@9:15 Fred Brown to James Worthy.
I Never understood the ewing'strategy. He give 10 points to North Carolina with his goal tending.
A terrific championship game and then the guy just throws it away to the other team.
Thompson didn't mind Ewing's goaltends, because he thought it would create some intimidation on the part of Carolina players later on. Whether it was the right thing to do is debatable... most of the goaltended shots would have fallen anyway.
Thanks for the free points Patrick..
It's weird seeing Jordan not be the best player on his team
Brandon Johnson
What makes you think he wasn’t?
@@kozmeetorez James Worthy was the more dominant player Jordan's freshman year. Worthy averaged more in every stat
Brandon Johnson
Watch the documentary and see what James worthy said.
@@kozmeetorez not saying he wasn't a better overall player at the time but at that point in time freshman had smaller responsibilities regardless of talent. Worthy carried more of the team load
You can see why the Lakers picked up James Worthy.
LOL 9:25 he's like, "I dun goof'd coach"
shannon sharpe brought me here lol..🤣
Damn unc was fast.
He passed it to the wrong team at the worst time.
I always wonder what would have happened if Ewing hadn't goaltended those 5 shots.
the 3 pt shot in college did no exist until 1987
9:24; I'm sure Fred Brown still has nightmares about that.
Tubewings, he should never have been in that position! Wasn't fair to him; Sleepy Floyd should have had the ball
The ceiling is the roof.go.tarheels..
Floyd passing it to the other team 😂
*Brown
Pat Ewing got all the UNC highlights smh
How can you get so many goal tending calls? lol that's crazy
BIG GAME JAMES is why they won tha title he was unstoppable all year was poy and tourney ppoy
When your lateral vision failed you
Just one more reason why Lebron cannot be the G.O.A.T.
I don't think they had 3 pointers
Even in college Ewing already had knee pads.
which ones jordan
the one that made the clutch shot with 15 seconds left.
was worthy better than jordan in college?
I think so, that's why worthy was picked No.1 in 1982 and Jordan No.3 in 1984.
Jordan has admitted that Worthy made his college game better
He didn't need to hit the first and he missed the second on purpose so time would expire.
Pat Ewing? Never heard of him.
I love Michael Jordan, but more than Michael Jordan winning it sleepy Floyd blew that game... does anyone agree ?
Looks like javale mcgee is a pat fan
not until 1987 season.
