    Thanks for the video. I thought winter sowing would be for colder climates with snow but you've just clarified it for me. And keep on talking about being able to transplant carrots. So many people still don't know that they can be. There's so much wrong information out there. That's why i love watching your videos!!!👍

      P. C. I live in zone 7. Winter sowing works well here. I have more success growing lavender and rosemary in jugs than anything else.

    Thank you - I think I will give this a try. I have a super small garden and a short zone 3 growing season, so for many things like my herbs - I start just a couple seedlings or so ahead of time and then when I transplant I direct so as well. It means I get just a little bit of it as an earlier crop or for seed crop.

    wish I saw this before jump starting mine into seed treys in my heated She Shed, but they have sprouted and I do plan to transplant them... I am going to do them this way next year. I'm in a 5B grow zone and our growing season is short here in Montana. Thank you for this!

    Thank you for saying you use 6-9 carrot seeds in a milk jug. Now, I'd love to know are those 6-9 seeds sprinkled in a line? A small heap? Four spots? What works best? It's a goofy question I know, but nobody seems to cover this nitty gritty point. You will I bet! :) Many thanks from zone 4b in Minneapolis.

      Hi Mia, just posted you a long answer on your other Q too. :) See my playlist of 24 vids on HOW MAMY SEEDS TO WS in jugs. It's different for every one. In general if I do 6-9 seeds. I will do 2 rows of 3 or 3 rows of 3 seeds. Evenly spaced. Other seeds we BROADCAST which means just sprinkle all over like lettuces and basil. :)

    That’s such good information. Always dread growing carrots due to carrot fly

      Thanks much Naheed. I've been lucky, not one carrot fly ever, especially in the milk jugs. Try a few in jugs and see how you like it and report back to me so I can hear how you did! :)

      They're tricky because you have to keep them consistently moist during germination. And as soon as they come up, you should cover them with garden fleece to protect them from slugs and carrot flies. Last year I grew some late season carrots in a grow bag, and they came up so thick and beautifully, but I didn't cover them and a few days later I just had bare dirt again because some slugs moved in and devoured them. They left a sticky trail, which is how I know who was to blame.
      If you don't have time to water them everyday, try pre-sproutings some seed in moist paper towels in a plastic container or baggy. Then plant them (but not too deep) as soon as you see signs of germination.

    Oh no your not in Ohio any more. I just sowed carrots, in my beds and I have over turned milk jugs over them. In ground winter sowing maybe?

      @JuicingGardener  6 років тому

      yes we actually have a name for that method called No Transplant Winter Sowing. You get the same moist greenhouse effect at the jugs but don't have to transplant. I do that method too.
      I'll always be an Ohio gardener in my heart but now we take it to the next level ... WS or Milk Jug Sowing all year long! Stay tuned :)

      The only thing about this method is the wild winds that will have your containers a mile away from your plants.
