  • If you Pre Germinate your Carrot seeds before you sow them you can shave several days off the 14 to 21 days specified on the packet, giving your carrots a 'fast start'. In this video I pre germinate then plant some seeds using a home made template that's easily made.

RECOMMENDED: To really see 'what's going on' in the bath and to appreciate the iridescent colour in the starlings re watch the birds in slow motion. Chose the settings icon on the bottom right of the screen. It's the one that looks like a cog wheel then select 0.25 play back speed.

Once you've placed the seeds in the paper towel & container...Do you place the container in a cool-dark or Warm-light place?

    • @HomeGrownVeg

@@tmaduro4494 Just room temperature and a light spray with water every day or two. Dark or light id doesn't but try to plant them out as soon as they germinate. A little white root that's hard to see against the white of the tissue that's all your looking for. HGV

Both my 9 year old son and myself love this technique, thank you for sharing with us. We tried to sow Green beans (twice ), we have tried Carrots (twice) and we have tried Parsnips, all in soil in a propogator, and Failed ! We have tried again using your method, and have had such success that we now have 8 tubs on the go, germinating multi-coloured carrots, autumn King carrots, Red onion, Garlic, Sage, Parsley, Fennel, Marigold, Parsnip, Green beans (be warned they pong !). We have also had a go with the Fast start potatoes and they have worked. Thanks again.

This year I have started to pre germinate all my seeds from squash to kale, right up until carrots. Saves lots if time and trouble. My squash germinated in 2 days and the carrots germinated in less than a week. I am so glad I found you. I am now successful at growing carrots. I lay down some paper towel. I spray it till nice and , moist I lay down the seeds and fold the pater. I close the napkin and slide the paper towel in half and slide them in a small plastic baggie. I hang them from a strong magnet on the fridge door. I go to the next I did that to 200 or more seeds this spring and all my seeds are growing. I get almost 100 % germination and when I don't I just tossed them and only plant the good ones. Such a pleasure to grow this way. No more buying plants that come with bugs and cost money....

I'm a delivery truck driver and, on my old route, I used to drive through a town that had vineyards on either side of the highway. The starlings would be running their formations at 10 am, and again around 2-3 pm, as I drove up and back on my route. I LOVED watching that ANYtime I came across it. Once, I suggested to a guy that I'd met on a dating site that we pack a picnic and go there to watch. I never heard from him again. LOL - I miss that route. Love seeing your bird sprinkler; and, thanks for the carrot info.

The part of the video with the birds was a sight to behold! You can’t beat the wonders of nature. You should send that part of the video with the birds bathing to the rspb, they could use it in their advertising. Or the bbc for their nature watch programme. They would probably pay you.

Please don't talk to me about starlings. I don't mind them outdoors where they belong but NOT in my living room!!...Just had one come down my chimney yesterday. I opened the firebox door on my wood stove and something whipped past my leg so fast I had no time to see what it was. At first I thought it may have been a bat. It flew past me into the kitchen and after searching all over and not finding it I took a peek behind my AGA and sure enough, there it was huddled in the corner at the back, way out of reach. (Scared silly no doubt) So not being able to reach it I had to try to get it to fly back out of there so made noise just above where it was and sure enough out it flew, back into the living room. I had already opened the door in the living room out onto the deck so thought it might go for the sunlight and fly out. No such luck.I sat quietly and waiting for it to make a move for over an hour but still no activity and by this time I was starting to wonder if I had missed it. So I carefully ventured into the living room (My house is all open planned with vaulted ceilings in the living room) and sure enough, there it was sitting up on a high shelf. Anyway at this point seeing me I guess he(more likely she) decided to make a run for it and flew out the door. I have to say I was very relieved as my house has very few doors and the starling could have ended up anywhere . Anyway, it all ended well ....

@@HomeGrownVeg Yes, some years ago my late hubby was woken up by some rather "excited" yelling (from me of course) A bat had somehow got in our living room and kept flying back and forth. The dog was going nuts, I had a blanket over my head and my hubby jumped out of bed in just his underwear and chased the bat with a plastic fly swat. Needless to say, the fly swat was useless so in his murky, sleep induced haze, he turned on the overhead fan. Hmm, also not a great idea! unfortunately the bat couldn't put up much of a fight against the large fan blades and I will leave that outcome to your imagination. Now I would rather chase the wild creatures back outside where they belong. I have a healthy respect for the good they do for our environment, but in this instance that wasn't to be the case. Take care everyone. by the way, I would love to have seen the video of the guy filming his dad shooing the bat out of the room. Sounds like it was funny.

‘morning, the music was lovely 🤫
I wonder if this would work. instead if placing the seeds all over a small piece of tissue, mark a dry piece of template with a pinhole, then place each seed next to the holes, dampen, then leave to germinate. When germinated, place the circle smoothly in the bucket and cover with a thin layer of compost. Press down lightly.

      Martyn,
There’s a very good chance you’ve made no mistakes and done everything correctly. I’m not a Botanist to be sure, this only my opinion. I had the same trouble with a variety of radish seeds last Spring. My nephew who is a commercial seed broker explained it like this. The packaged seed market doesn’t have the same requirements for germination, lot tracking etc. The average rate of germination is only 41%. Compare that to commercial seed suppliers who need to meet a rate of 93% and this is the lowest threshold allowed. These standards are in place here in the States...no idea for the UK. So when you see these kind of numbers, you might not have a thing to do with it.
      Good Luck!

Seems over in my neck of the woods, some shops are cottoning on to us gardeners using their waste products. I recently had to pay £1 for s large empty sweet jar ( the smaller ones were 50p} and £1 for a bag of used coffee grounds! Morrisons now charge 99p for 8 10” water buckets. Still cheap I know, but they have realised that they can make money from their waste now!

Too many startup failures outside. Be it to dry, to cold, to...whatever. Lead me to the same, germinate under controlled conditions, than move them outside. A little bit more work for sure, but definitely worth the trouble, the success rate increase exponentially. No thinning involved, save seeds. Definitely it's a YES! Cheers ;-)

It's possible that youtube has blocked the music to some countries. It happens sometimes, not sure why. I'm listening from the U.S. and there was no sound at all when you stop speaking. But clearly for some people there is. Not a big deal, but thought I'd mention a possible reason why some can't hear anything. Based on comments, I'd guess the music is bird sounds, so no idea why that would be blocked. But maybe it has a tag from whomever made it. Or maybe it's missing a tag that lets youtube know it's "free use" and not copywrite? Who knows. UA-cam is weird sometimes.

You saved me a lot of wasted money and time. Before your video, I'd been having no luck germinating 2 kinds of parsley (flat, curly), spearmint seeds, chives, and 99% of my evergreen white onion seeds (scallions). I kept trying since January - over and over. (My bok choy and arugula germinated at 100%) I kept thinking it was my soil. About 5 days ago, I tested this method of yours. It proved to me that the seeds weren't viable and I'd been wasting my time for 5 months on them - it was a nearly sterile environment and so soil had nothing to do with it. THANK YOU. I bought fresh seeds last night and will try again. My old seeds were exposed to humidity for a few months. THANK YOU for helping me see the problem was dead seeds! (If you saw a previous comment of mine - I deleted that - I thought my parsley did germinate very fast (7 hours) using this method - until I looked at the dry seeds in the envelope to compare what I was seeing and realized the tiny white "roots" weren't roots but were bits sticking out from the dried seed tip! My error on that one. Was all excited thinking they'd sprouted .... live and learn.) Will update if I get the new ones going right! (I'm confident now)

    • @HomeGrownVeg

If the packet says 14 to 21 days to germinate don't be surprised if they germinate a lot quicker on damp tissue but I would give them at least that amount of time before I 'wrote them off'. Sometimes germination is hard to see but once you see you have enough seeds germinated its time to 'move them on'. Jim.

I copied one of your previous carrot videos, sowing seeds through a grid direct into the bucket. DT seeds, Nantes and Autumn King, I think they were called. Day 6 about 5 popped up above the soil. It is now 10 days and about 30 have popped up. Why so quick, when packet says 14-21 days?!

For tiny seeds I dump them
On a white paper plate . I can see them
Well against the white. Then I dampen the tip of a pointy knife and pick up a couple of seeds on the knife as Nd scrape them off over hole with a card (paper or plastic) it works well for me them with the rest I bend paper plate like a funnel to put the rest back in package

Why take the seeds off the paper? I plant the paper too; saves that fiddly second step. You can also use a thin flour and water 'glue' to keep the seeds in place if you plant without pre-sprouting.

Not facial tissue. I reckon he uses kitchen paper towel (kitchen roll) as I can just make out a typical embossed swirl/circles design on the paper. I might be using the same paper towel brand in my kitchen lol.
