  • Watch over my shoulder and learn how to grow organic, heirloom cantaloupes and watermelons in free, recycled mini-greenhouses like milk and juice jugs, also called the Winter Sowing method. These containers are put out in the snow or cold weather to grow super strong, hardened seedlings outdoors! I answer the question 'how many seeds do I put in a container?' and much more. Once the watermelon and cantaloupe seedlings are grown, then are then transplanted into your final home for them, either a container, pot, bucket or in ground or raised bed... etc.

    I stumbled upon your winter sowing videos last spring and decided to try it this year. I got really excited to try it and I may have jumped the gun a bit, I had every single container out on feb 1st! All 58 of them. Herbs, lettuces, carrots, melons, squash, tomatoes.. And more! But I think it's going to be ok. I peeked in the tops today and I have bunches of Bibb lettuce, spinach, broccoli and sunflowers all poking up! This is so much fun! I'm a 22 year old guy and I turned into a small child full of Christmas Eve style excitement when I saw the green bits coming up! I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this method and you've made a new winter sower up in central NY :)

      +GardenDragon wonderful to hear!Thanks so much for sharing your story with me. Made my day. It's ok that you put them in on Feb 1. The only thing you might have to do is cover the ones that have already sprouted IF you get another freeze or snow. you can throw a blanket over them for a day or so til it warms up again. hey are you in my Veggie Winter Sowing group yet?If not go join! you'll love it. facebook.com/groups/WinterSowing.VegGardeningWithSheryl See ya there! ~Sheryl :)

    When your dogs barked in the video, my dogs went nuts! I tried to tell them that those dogs barked 8 years ago. They didn't listen.

      @@JuicingGardener that is great news! I want to winter sow strawberries and kajari melons. I also want to grow another small melon and I ordered a blueberry plant. I'm so excited for this years garden. I'm having foot surgery in April so everything that I can winter sow I'm going to try and do at least 10 milk jugs per day next week. I'm loving the winter sowing process! Virginia zone 7a.

    Thank you for being so specific on your favorite heirloom varieties to winter sow. It is very helpful during seed ordering time. Love all of your detailed videos. For those of us newbies, it is also very helpful when you repeat the important points like moist soil, etc... Many thanks on helping us grow seedlings for practically FREE if we save our seeds from year to year. Love this group. Thank you!

      Hi Jennifer, thanks much for your kind comments. Glad you like the videos. After 5 years of gardening, i've found that the magic is in the details, to give you that extra boost to get the most out of your time, money and efforts in the garden. Seed saving is one of my fav parts of the process. So empowering to have a box full of organic, heirloom seeds that you collected yourself.
      See you in the group!

      They were literally divine tasting. Vertically grown. Maybe the size of large grapefruits. Juicy. Heirloom tasting. Get good heirloom seeds and use the best premium potting mix you can, get organic if possible. :)

    Hi and greetings from Canada!
    this was my first year at winter gardening and i was very successful.
    Thank you for the nice video and next year i will try some melons and some squash in winter gardening.
    If someone is looking a great source for great containers they could visit a construction site and obtain some easily cleaned containers(easily cleaned jugs with simple rinsing with water. Apparently they originally contained an additive to reduce the the toxic exhaust from deisell engines and they are disposed of in the landfill site.. /

    Dum question how important is the perlite, second how much in ratio mix for perlite. Newbie gardener , Cool video, learning as I go, Thanks!Keep up the good work!

    • @JuicingGardener
      @JuicingGardener  8 років тому

      +Sal Salazar there are no dumb questions!! There are two things that can help with drainage perlite and vermiculite. I prefer vermiculite because perlite always floats to the top! Either will work. If you use perlite just mix well so it goes down deep too. I would say I add about 1/5 to 1/4 vermic or perlite. the rest is top soil and compost. Keep on going and you'll fall in love iwth gardening!
