    To most it might look fine (though the turntable's fluctuating might be a red flag), but anyone that knows their Gramophones will notice that this Gramophone is an Indian Reproduction one that is Crudely-Made and Taken From Various Parts and cobbled together to make it look Authentic. They tend to look just a bit too shiny for the supposed age and have a very tinny sound. If you want to see and hear the genuine article, here are some good links:

      Albert Sánchez I got my original for $40 and all it needs is a $40 spring and some oiling and cleaning. The reproductions just don't work at all. This sounds terrible. If you want to buy an antique gramophone, don't buy these. You send several hundred dollars on this only to wee it doesn't work right. That is several hundred dollars gone, where for the same or less you can get an original one in cosmetically poor condition that runs like an angel and is worth the money.

    @EvilDeathTom There is no doubt that the modern "BOSE" system is probably the best audio available today, and much better than the old gramophones, but.....The old phonographs will outlast every modern audio device, and the sound of human voices is still much more impressive through analog than through digital. I remember how fascinated one of my friends was when he heard the voice of Patti Page through one of my Victrolas. The guy was flabbergasted out of his mind!!

    • @tylerbaldwin9513
      @tylerbaldwin9513 4 роки тому

      But it's not an original machine. These type of Gramophones are usually cheaply cobbled together from old parts in India. The sound on this sounds tinny and shrill because of its poor quality. A Genuine Gramophone or Phonograph of the time can have an exceptional sound quality to it. Here's a good example of peak Phonograph sound from a genuine Victrola Credenza: ua-cam.com/video/lpprkw2i2Us/v-deo.html

    I can imagine this in a pretty cool setting:
    A team of twelve future-ish soldiers going through a warehouse, (like the hunger games mocking Jay forest scene with the peackeepers.) this starts playing over some loudspeakers, as they patrol through the place, a gunfight ensues, them versus one man and a series of elaborate traps, all the while this plays. Seems to fit the element a little (and nope I'm not copying the scorch trials).

    there are a lot of portable models for about$150, old table top models with a external horn are good but some times cost around $2000 but if you don't mined going and picking up your phonograph then the console or floor models would be the best, for a good starter one i would get a victor portable model the ones that are in a suit case then if you want to get more in to it then see if you can find a 1920's internal horn table top model for about $450-$750 good luck with your purchase

    • @pixeldoom2406
      @pixeldoom2406 6 років тому +8

      No, because records made after the 1950s tipically have a much smaller groove, are made out o vinyl (while these old records are made out of shellac), spin at 33 rpm instead of 78, and would totally get ruined if played on a gramophone.

    I'm starting to think this may be the first gramophone video on youtube! But I don't know if it counts because it is a "Crap-o-phone".

    You have to stop the platter while cranking it up.

    @MontagTheMagician I recently bought a reproduction gramophone and a couple of Elvis Presley singles from around 1954 (some of the last 78s). What needles should I have in order not to damage the record? Thanks in advance!

      I really don't recommend a reproduction as they are more expensive as originals and don't work nearly as well, but, as you already bought it, use steel needles. They have medium, soft, and loud tone needles. Also, change them every side. A $10 dollar pack gave me 100 needles, so I can play 50 records. Don't reuse needles as the needle wears down from a point to a stub and gets too big for the record groove and tears it up.

      Elvis? These records may be rare and expensive collectives. You shouldn't play them on any mechanical phonograph (regardless replica or original). The records may became brittle ober years and may don't stand the stressful mechanical playback. Play them with a proper record player instead and get some trashy 78's for your phonograph. :-).
