It brought tears to my eyes. I'm the old man now. I grew up listening to Neil Young. He wasn't a classic back then, just a cool artist to light up and kick back and listen to.. I never thought I'd be able to relate to the old man. He bought the ranch from a couple of lawyers. He didn't kick the caretaker off of the ranch. haha Thanks for the nostalgic listen.
From Songfacts: “Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man. The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970 (just think about those real estate prices compared to now!). Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused.”
BP Neil was the Young of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. One of the most famous songs he wrote was Ohio. That song deals with Kent State killings by National Guard soldiers. He also rejected commercials using his music in the 90’s.
Every year, I dedicate this song to my dad, who passed back in 2005 (his birthday, Fathers Day, and on the anniversary of his passing) because every time I look in the mirror I see his face and as I get older and reflect on back on my life I am a lot like my dad both good and bad. Along with "Cat in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin.
I sang this for my Pops right before he passed. I was not raised by him and didn't have much of any kind of relationship with him till I was in my late 20's. I ended up pretty much living the same life he did without even knowing it. We both chased a dream of becoming pro pool players and spent most of our youth on the road playing. He stopped playing when my Mom got prego with me and got a real job, then they split. I'm now in my mid 40's, never had kids to settle me down, so I took that dream much further the he did. So this song and the pool table helps keep me connected with the few memories I have with him.
Love Neil Young. Fun story: we had a Chihuahua for many years who would occasionally whine along with the music in the car, especially when he got older and more crotchety, and he absolutely loved Neil Young. His was the only music the dog would consistently whine to, and he was always in tune. It was amazing; he was the best dog. ❤
from his time in Buffalo Springfield to his time with Crosby Stills Nash (and Young) to his solo career-Neil is a great songwriter! his rabbit hole is deep and satisfying!
A few artists don't need much more than a pair of boots, a coat, a guitar and a stool and a stage. Isn't that something? No light affects, no girls, no back up, no electronics. And the whole show goes that way. Excellent. Beautiful. 💗 feuding aside, good times.
I believe the ranch was in NorCal. Marin, or Napa counties? Neil Young was in Buffalo Springfield, who performed the classic, For What It’s Worth (Public Enemy sampled it). Neil Young was also in Crosby Stills Nash and Young, they were a “supergroup” of people known for being in other bands. CSNY performed at Woodstock. And the *final* piece of trivia is that Young and Rick James were in an R&B group together in the mid-60’s based out of Buffalo, NY called the Mynah Birds!
The soundtrack for Jim Jarmushs film Dead Man with Jhonny depp is more or less improvised by Neil with a fender stratocaster while watching the film live during the recordings :D
You should also react to: Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young "Ohio" is about 4 protestors that got shot and killed by police at Kent State University in 1970. Crosby is David Crosby, Stills is Stephen Stills, Nash is Graham Nash and Young is Neil Young. There was a good amount of protest songs because it can the message across the nation on the radio. More so than local protesting could ever do.
I sang this for my Pops right before he passed. I was not raised by him and didn't have much of any kind of relationship with him till I was in my late 20's. Ah, Uncle Neil. What a legend. So many great tracks. AKA the granddaddy of grunge. Such an inspiration to generations of rock songwriters. I grew up singing his catalogue around campfires. If you want to check out some of his filthy rock try one of his tracks from the live album Weld.
Check out 'The Needle and the Damage Done'. Thanks for reacting to 'Old Man'. Brings back such great memories and Neil Young is such a great talent and human being.
I fell in love with this song on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy was impersonating Neil and singing this song. He was very respectful, sounded just like him and then Neil came out, dressed exactly the same as Jimmy, and they dueted. Brilliant and goosebump worthy.
Neil Young is amazing and he’s my favorite artist ever. I grew up listening to him because he was also my dad’s favorite. This is a rabbit hole you should explore. He is often considered as being the Godfather of Grunge music with his band Crazy Horse. Kurt Cobain was heavily influenced by him.
Ah Neil Young - one of our great Canadian artists. I'm sure you've heard Heart of Gold - his biggest hit, although Young later said it was too "middle of the road" for him. Check out Ohio and especially Rocking in the Free World, a social commentary about poverty, addiction, homelessness in the US.
A finer songwriter, lyricist, singer, guitar player you will not find. Legend with a very deep catalog, tons to explore - his electric stuff is as heavy as this is delicate. Really enjoyed your video!
Neil Young has written many incredible albums. He was definitely a live performer. Several times he performed with CSN. He is in my top ten artists. I would add that he has done many concerts to support causes, such as support for farmers in the 1980’s, and the concert for NY after the 9/11 attacks where so many lost their lives.
Yup - a ranch in an expensive part of California at 24 - he had already had three successful albums as a member of the group Buffalo Springfield and two platinum albums as a solo artist before he wrote "Old Man", so he could afford it.
I grew up listening to EVERYTHING but Neil Young is a big deal, especially in Winnipeg, where I'm sitting right now, because it's where Neil Young is from! This is my fave version of Old Man to pay attention to. Heart of Gold is one of my fave songs to cover. Mmmm, now I'm craving more Neil Young & maybe some Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young! ✌️💙🎵
Yes, he bought a ranch at age 24. He was already very successful having been a rock star with Buffalo Springfield. Neil kept him on the payroll for the rest of his life.
Neil was living up in Northern California in the San Mateo hills, I accidentally met him helping my friend Johnny at his little bar up there because his bartender didn't show up. It was so busy, I was bartending and he came up to order drinks and I got annoyed because he was ordering them one at a time, then turning around to his friend to see what they wanted, lol. I had always dreamed of meeting him some day, and here it was the moment and I was rushing him, lol. Have to say I was running a fever and ended up with tonsillitis and strep, I just hope no one got it. He wouldn't kick the old man off his ranch, just so you know.
If you like this singer songwriter vibe you should check out John Prine. His song “Sam Stone” is fantastic. Love the videos, brother. Keep the original content coming as well.
You remember Neil Youngs name because he was the one last year that started the whole, I'm boycotting Joe Rogan and taking my music off spotify movement lol.
His ranch was/maybe still is in the SF Bay Area-Marin maybe. There was a huge fire there a few years ago and he lost all his instruments and memorabilia collected over his lifetime. Broken Arrow is a haunting song he did with Buffalo Springfield. Interesting dude.
First saw Neil Young ( and his band Crazy Horse ) live 50 years ago ! The most interesting part was that the Support Band that night were a little known band you might have heard of called THE EAGLES ( who were allowed a 3 song setlist 🤣)
Louis Avila was the caretaker, and he lived on the ranch with his wife. There was an interview where Neil Young told about Louis taking him on a tour of the ranch and asking how such a young man could buy this ranch… It was $350,000 at the time. Neil Young was newly wealthy from his music, and he told Louis… “Just lucky, Louie, just lucky”.
Me and my old man look alike alot... and he taught me most things I know and base my identity around. This song has always choked me up a bit for some reason...
Fun fact: When he was still living in Canada, Neil Young was in a band with Rick James. They also shared an apartment. They were good enough to get signed by Motown, but when management realized Rick had fled to a Canada to evade the military draft (Vietnam), they found some clause and cancelled the contract, essentially killing the band and even their ability to tour or get gigs. Neil and another member of the band eventually made it to Los Angeles, and the rest, as they say, is history. I’m fairly certain the ranch was in the Los Angeles hills, not Marin. It was David Crosby who made his home in the Bay Area Rick James eventually recovered from the scandal and went on to become a legend in his own right
You definitely have to react to "Heart of Gold" from this same live performance. It will blow you away. He plays the guitar, sings the harmonica and sings during the same performance. He's crazy music genius!
I love this song, it was one of my late husband’s favourite songs. Great seeing you discover new music. Have you listened to any Led Zeppelin yet. Dazed and Confused is a good place to start with them.
Neil is Canadian. I have always loved him. This is written & released in 1972. Written for the caretaker of the Northern California, Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased for $350,00 in 1970 (equivalent) to $2,637,446 in 2022. The song compares a young man’s life to an old man’s and shows that the young man has, to some extent, the same needs as the old one. Please do The Needle and the Damage Done, Alabama, Ohio, Harvest Moon, etc. etc. Great job reacting to this!! 🎵✌️
Thanks for the reaction. You could try to cover one song from every album of his solo work and it would take a couple months add in the multiple bands he has been connected with and live performances with HUGE artists there would be another month or two. The origin of the song came from the reaction of the old man reacting just like you did to a young man buying a huge ranch. Neil wrote the song to show although Neil was rich he was just like the old man in the fact he is young and in search of love . Like the old man was years prior. From this BBC concert a very short but awesome song Love in Mind or Don't Let it Bring You Down (best intro for this song can be found on Crosby, Stills , Nash and Young live album 4-way street. Just a side note. When you covered Lynyrd Skynyrd a month ago... The lead singer had a T-shirt from Neil Young's Tonight's the Night album. A very underrated album. Not a single song on the album is weak. My personal favorites in my today mood are Come on Baby Let's go Downtown ...the lead vocal on that is the late Danny Whitten...Title tracks Tonight's the Night(about how Danny became the late ...) Borrowed Tune a song he STOLE from The Rolling Stones admitted it in the song and was never sued for it...Speakin' Out a great bluesy tune with a young(18-19 years old) Nils Lofgren playing awesome lead guitar.
He fell in love with the ranch and bought it (rich young musician).. he had had a lot of relationship troubles andhe replaced them witrh his relationship with the ranch (like the caretakers relationship with the ranch). It will always be there for him to roll home too. In other words, dont worry old man, I know you love the ranch and believe the ranch loves you back; I feel the same way. It is his heart forever and no, he did not kick the caretaker out. Someone had to do all the work..
This was used as the ending song in the movie "The Expendables 3" where the new young recruits are singing it in the bar to Sly Stallone, Jason Statham and the rest of the older Expendables
I love Neil Young!!!. My sons middle name is Neil. They played this song at my first husbands funeral. There is a band The Redlight Kings. They did this song with Neil in the backup. They have a video and it updated it. They did an amazing job.
Neil's songs make you think and feel. My last speeding ticket was rocking out to Rockin' in the Free World with the convertible top down in the summer on 202S in PA. Cop asked why I hadn't stopped sooner. I replied that I didn't know he was behind me, I was jamming out to Rockin' in the Free World. He clearly didn't dig the vibe because I got a $200 ticket. 🤩
You should definitely check out some more Neil Young. Also, Redlight King made a hip-hop version of this song (with the same title), of which Neil himself approved. You might want to check that one out too.
just wanted to point out that you just sat mesmerized by one guy sitting in a chair playing an acoustic guitar, no theatrics no band just him the honesty of his writing and a guitar.
Neil is both the godfather of grunge guitar (check out Rock in America and his work with Crazy Horse) and part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young, so folk and can rock his ass off...he could buy a ranch at 24 because of his early work with CSNY
I love listening to you as you try to disect all of these great old songs!! I think you worked this one out pretty well. It is as if he has recently become very aware that in spite of all of his enormous fame, privelege that comes with fame, and money which he could only dream about a few years earlier, he finds himself alone. He is beginning to grasp that what he really wants and needs is to find his soul-mate. All of his success has led him to live a solitary existence, just like the caretaker. A lesson we all need to learn, is to prioritize our hearts. The possibility of love should be pursued when and wherever it comes your way. You don"t want to be older and thinking back on chances gone, and wondering, what if. Thanks BP!! If you have a baby boy, are you going to call him BP Junior????? ☺🙏
Neil Young started with Buffalo Springfield, which you've also done here. When asked by the caretaker "how such a young man came to own such a ranch as this," he simply replied "I've been lucky in life.". He's also known as "The godfather of grunge" and is credited for starting the movement. 😊
Neil also sang with Crosby, Still & Nash. He also is 78 & still touring. This one & Heart of gold are my fav, but I love all his stuff. Harvest Moon is another good one. Needle & the damage done is a powerful one.
It brought tears to my eyes. I'm the old man now. I grew up listening to Neil Young. He wasn't a classic back then, just a cool artist to light up and kick back and listen to.. I never thought I'd be able to relate to the old man. He bought the ranch from a couple of lawyers. He didn't kick the caretaker off of the ranch. haha Thanks for the nostalgic listen.
i'm an old lady now and Neil Young is in rotation still today!
@@karenmandeville7116me too! ❤
I'm the old man now too ✌️💙🎵
Old lady here too... Just wanted to say hey... Nice to be in company of folks who 'know'...
Peace and Blessed Be
Who thought they would ever be old eh ?
From Songfacts:

Basically $2,750,000 in 2024.

Love Ohio, not a cheerful song, but spoke to my generation.
@@hannejeppesen1809 one of my formative memories was of watching students riots and trying to figure out how throwing things justified being shot
Canadian Legend period and the grandfather of grunge
The Needle and The Damage Done, Keep on Rocking In the Free World
You should hear Neil’s electric sets. Dude isn’t all mellow music, he’s a serious rocker, esp live with Crazy Horse
Another Canadian treasure! Singer, songwriter, lyricist and activist! The 70's were a great time to be a teen!
He became a US Citizen roughly 9 years ago.
Pure talent and musicality. Just a man and his guitar.
Just like Jim Croche

I always read this song as being addressed from a son to a father... it just makes too much sense
There are a lot of amazing Neil Young songs. Southern Man is a great one, Rockin’ in the Free World, Heart of Gold, etc
Love Neil Young.

To his credit Neil kept the man on the ranch till his death.

just wanted to point out that you just sat mesmerized by one guy sitting in a chair playing an acoustic guitar, no theatrics no band just him the honesty of his writing and a guitar.
Wow, BP. It's a nostalgic one for a lot of people. Thanks for taking us back!
One man, one guitar, and one song.......so much talent!!!!
Neil Young is amazing. Love this song but the neddle and the damage done is my absolute favorite. Thanks for putting this on BP
Wow! I am so glad someone turned you on to this! I love watching your reactions, and I think you hit this one on the head. Great artist, great song!
My mom is 68 and still loves Neil Young. He was part of Crosby Still Nash and Young
He is from Canada, so many great songs. Love him Love him
Love him what a poet! Love Needle and Damage Done. Give it a listen.✌️.
Great Music from Yesteryear. Neil Young is Amazing
Neil Young yes let's✌️One of a kind voice
In addition to his voice, how about his own guitar accompaniment?
Captivating. Not many artists can capture an audience with just themselves and a guitar.
Many times I've sung this song to my father who passed on way too early.
One of my favorite artists. Folk, rock, country and the music in his other groups. 30+ very good songs. Rabbit hole please.
Neil Young started with Buffalo Springfield, which you've also done here. When asked by the caretaker "how such a young man came to own such a ranch as this," he simply replied "I've been lucky in life.". He's also known as "The godfather of grunge" and is credited for starting the movement. 😊
Harvest Moon is my favorite song by Neil Young. After all these years (though still a newer song of his), I can listen to it over and over again.
Love this song...
Love my Neil Young!!! So glad to see you realizing his gritty harmonic talent
Thanks for really listening to this song. Great break down ❤
La mia giovinezza..❤❤❤ thank you !😢 Neil Young, epic artist.
Neil also sang with Crosby, Still & Nash. He also is 78 & still touring. This one & Heart of gold are my fav, but I love all his stuff. Harvest Moon is another good one. Needle & the damage done is a powerful one.
Thanx! Great reaction! Hes amazing! And Canadian! Woohoo! He’s a wood stocker! Have you reacted to any grateful dead?? I’d love to see that!
