    Thanks for an informative and unbiased review. I'm going through a flying wing phase in my flying right now and your video just sold me on the Opterra although now I see they are coming out with a slightly smaller version, may be easier to transport. Thanks for sharing your expertise, looking forward to your next video.

    Wow, the circles as you fly thru shadow/sun light is really impressive to see! THe
    settings you're flying in are great. I live in a flat area so it'll be different but none the
    less beautiful to experience...… Never flown..... soon I shall.

    Thanks for this review and flight. I've been considering this wing but I think your very well done review is enough for me to make that decision. So, E-Flight.....reward these guys for doing informative and accurate reviews that help us decide to purchase from you...it was this video that made my decision for me. Thanks again for your commitment to RC. If I lived closer, I'd love to come and fly with you all...I've watched about all of your videos and I know you are great group of guys as well as great pilots! Take care and Merry Christmas!

      Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Don! The Opterra is a great model - still flying one. The original was killed by a tree at flight fest but the second is going strong. From what I can tell the pilots the get one love it and given its size a lot of them are doing longer range fpv with it. It breaks down and sets up quick so it's easy to transport and overall is a super fun wing. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

    I watched a video earlier from Horizon Hobbies where they explained that although that little opening just to the right of the nose, in the wing edge, has been used for FPV cameras by some owners, it is actually meant for a pitot tube.

    Great video.
    I was looking at the FX79 Buffalo but I like this platform better. It seems to be much more streamline. It still has plenty of space for FC and FPV gear. The transport break down is quick and easy. I think this and the Drax would round out my wing arsenal.

      Never had the others you mention so I can't compare but I still love the Opterra - it's a simple, solid flying big wing. And you have the room to make it along range ship if you want.

      That was my thought. I saw someone put a 5000mah in it. Only thing is the range of the spektrum RX. Could put a tbs crossfire in it but that means a whole rework of the airframe. I have an X8 frame waiting to be built but this one seems more transport friendly.

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  8 років тому

      yeah if you go long range the spektrum has to go. it's got the room to add everything you need. it's about 3 minutes to get the wings on and off which is one of the best features.

    Excellent video. Can you try to hand launch with no throttle just like the Theory W? I just not too comfortable hand launch with throttle. Thx

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  8 років тому +1

      I've seen one video of it done that way - the wing almost planted into the ground. It was also not thrown by the pilot-that would be even harder to pull off. So it's doable, but you have to throw it hard and get right on the throttle. Or you need to throw it off a ledge :)

    • @yellowbusguy
      @yellowbusguy 8 років тому +1

      I've been hand launching for years. Unless you somehow freeze your arm just as you release it, there is no way the prop will get you. Your hand is well out of the way before the prop becomes a danger.

    I'm debating between this Opterra and the new FT Night Radian...

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  6 років тому

      Two very different planes - the Opterra is an easy flying big wing and can be an fpv workhorse; long range, payloads, dropping stuff :); the Radian is a big easy flying glider with some cool LEDs that can do all sorts of patterns.

  • @Ethaneman
    @Ethaneman 8 років тому +1

    I realize they are quite different planes but which do you like better, the Blade Theory W or this Opterra? I'm wanting something FPV. I like speed, flying in lots of locations (fields, larger parks, beaches, etc) and I like larger planes usually over smaller so obviously I'll have to pick a direction and go with it but I am hoping to find something that gives me the most bang for the buck.

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  8 років тому

      if you want speed go with the Theory w - put a 4 cell in it and your going to be over 80 easy. it's easier to carry around too. The Opterra is slow compared to that but flies really well - it's more of a sight seeing type fpv and you have the room to add stuff like osd, long range etc. Well I guess to answer I don't like one over the other as they are so different. Right now I am really having fun with the Opterra.

    How well do you suppose this would fly with a GoPro and 3-axis gimbal?

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  6 років тому +1

      the go pro is fine - it'll fly all day with it. The gimbal will add weight and you'll need to adjust the cg. Power might be a little anemic without going to a 4 cell set up. Have you searched for the set-up? Someone may have done it but it will take some mods.

    • @cvonp
      @cvonp 6 років тому +1

      @@DiscoverRC Thanks! I'm not concerned about the mods - just the weight. All-in the setup is 273g - that's a GP4 Black and a FeiyuTech 3-axis gimbal
      I've also been looking at the Skywalker X8 but the Opterra looks easier for a one-man hand launch ; )

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  6 років тому +1

      It's an easy wing to launch - with the extra weight you'll need more power. But launching it in SAFE mode is usually a non event.

  • @sirhilsam

    This video is so comprehensive. It helps a lot especially since mine should arrive this week. Is the Opterra 'heavy' or difficult to launch?...you make it seem easy

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  8 років тому +1

      it felt a bit weird to launch the first few times just because it's so big. You just need to commit to giving it good throttle and a solid push - it's not hard at all. I am getting some dip when I launch probably because the angle is not quite right when I throw it. There are videos of people hand launching it - it's good to watch those a few times to get the idea.

    With the SAFE do you think a beginner could manage this?

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  7 років тому +1

      It's not difficult to fly - with SAFE you do need a lot of room because it limits how tightly you can turn the wing - it does large slow turns with the SAFE on. It's also a bit of a handful to launch given it's size - as a beginner I would not have been too comfortable with getting it in the air. But as far as flying it's very easy and gentle, it also glides forever.

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  6 років тому +1

      I've never found it to be under powered. Were you using a good battery? It's hard to know what is going on without seeing it happen. If you look at the the Sunday vids there are tons of Opterra launches shown. The only bad ones are when I've put too much stuff on it. It shouldn't even be too hard to toss it unpowered and still get it going. So something is off with the one you are flying, just not sure what it is.

Once flying its JUST enough power imo, for get about 3D or hovering lol. Discover RC I fly my bigger planes at a friends farm,lots of field. I live in a rural trailer park and have a large field behind my trailer and next to the office I use to fly my UMX and other smaller planes. Seems my neighbors really enjoy my flying and I get many people stopping to watch. They know I am disabled due to a Cancer surgery gone bad. I fix up dead and dying mowers and such to sell to buy my planes. They know this and I have found lawn mowers and weed wackers with notes pinned to them saying they hope I can get them going and buy new planes to fly for them. I didnt know my neighbors cared so much but glad they do. I got out the other day when we had a slight break in winter.

      Awesome!! I'll have to look into it. I took mine out this Saturday for the maiden flight and it was daunting at first to hand toss, but it was pretty predictable thanks to the "Launch" mode. On 3S up here in CO, flies alright. I already performed an ESC upgrade on mine using a Sky Power 60-Amp ESC with 5-Amp SBEC. Test flew 2 flights on 4S today using Admiral 4S 2200mAh 45C lipos and flies much more "appropriate" IMO. This one will give my Admiral 4S 2500mAh lipos something to do. :)

    Great review again! Thanks for sharing

      bigger does fly better indeed - the only problem is hauling those bigger planes around! :) At least this wing is easy to put together and break apart. Have a good one Dutch!

    Bought one of these week ago where the motor sits it has broken looking at it its not a really good finished. Tryed to do what you had done in launch mode not a chance crashed in the ground every time didn't even turn or go up or down done what manual said to do
    Real shame a lot of money .

    Launch it in launch mode and it won't dip like that.

    • @DiscoverRC
      @DiscoverRC  7 років тому

      that is safe or launch mode. The dip is from not enough throttle and a weakling, dainty toss. I've gotten used to giving it more throttle and a better toss. no more dips.
