  • Got myself a new Denon X4700H AV amplifier. It can power 9 speakers and process upto 11 channels with the use of an external 2-channel power amplifier. Wanted to share the HDMI and ARC handshaking problem with this set. I could not find any UA-cam videos on this issue, it's a different issue from the HDM1 2.1 bug which does not allow 4K@120Hz gaming, that has been reported quite extensively. My set's serial number is higher than 70,001 and according to Denon, the HDMI 2.1 gaming console bug has been fixed for these newer units. Hope the video is useful. Cheers!

I have the same 4700 unit with the same problems you describe in your video. Tried for months to figure out what the problem was, finally gave up and contacted Denon Customer Service. After some back and forth, Denon determined that i should send the unit to Panurgy for evaluation and repair. Denon would not cover the cost of shipping, even though the unit is in warranty. I had to pay for shipping myself - $100.
When the receiver came back about 1 1/2 weeks later, the paperwork from Panurgy noted that two of the boards had to be replaced. The unit appeared to work OK for about a month and a half. Then some of the same issues plus some new ones began to crop up. For example, now the unit cannot be turned off either with the remote or the power button. I have to unplug the power cord from the back of the unit each and every time.
I again contacted Denon's Customer Service. They basically responded that, since Panurgy had repaired and tested the unit before returning it, the problem must be on my end. They suggested today in an email that I try a variety of things to correct the problem like try different HDMI ports for my various devices. Ha! The only devices connected are TV/Cable and internet.
I have spent so many hours trying to figure out on my end what the problem might be! I'm not sure if I even want to try any more. It's pretty clear to me that the 4700 I have is a LEMON! And maybe that's true for all of the model 4700's! Don't know about the rest of you owners but I feel cheated and wish I had never bought it.

Had my denon avr and LG tv working perfectly over arc for the last year or so, after much tinkering and hair pulling. In fact, I had given up on making it work, when one day I turned the tv back on and, lo and behold, arc was working a treat.
Last week, things went south just as mysteriously. I'm thinking of kicking the whole mess to the curb and getting a soundbar.

Just started using Rogers Ignite. The set top box CEC has everything working great, even source detection and auto switching.

This is an EDID problem, don't use auto video settings on source or display switch to manual settings is the easiest workaround

I believe the handshake problem occurs when 2 different audio sources are turned on by the CEC setting / HDMI. Control ! I too have this issue with a Sony XBR 900 H / marantz SR7013 and the cable box (Shaw/Rogers) Now I have tried and tested it this way ! Turn tv only on first and let the handshake start there to amp leaving the cable box off . It appears to work in this sequence. I have my fingers crossed ! What I do t like about this way is with the tv being the source ,the on screen display from is not available!

Have a similar problem on my X4700H working with a Samsung 8 K new model TV with just the EARC connected via a AudioQuest high end 8K fastest HDMI cable. And my 4KBluRay connected for sound direct into the Denon 4700 input.I find sometimes I get no sound until I go into the TV menu and toggle the EARC settings, until it comes on.Sometimes the tv and the amp come on together, sometimes it doesn’t.I’ve changed all the settings in the tv menu such as CEC is on and relevant settings.I’ve had 5 previous Denon THX AVR units and never had such inconsistencies.I’ve been using AVRs since Pro-Logic first arrived so I’m pretty knowledgeable.I never give up easily and have tried every different combination and have spent too long on this 4700.It’s not like my previous Denon AVR’s .

Is this 4700 from the line manufactured after May of 2021? I believe the hdmi issue was supposed to be corrected in those

@@hundohan3280 I purchased it from Amazon in November 2021 I don’t know when it was manufactured. It could have been in stock for months before I purchased it.I have read about this fault on certain numbers.Only happens these days, the older Denon models were far less complicated and far more reliable.and sounded better, without all this room correction.

Howard Davidson yea, from what I’m seeing it’s an issue with newer models across a few different brands of avrs. Any chance you’re using an hdmi active cable for your connection? I’m wondering if the active cables make a difference for those types of receivers.

This is just great... my wife bought this same Denon AVR receiver for me just a month ago on 3/21. My X-4700H video flickers and it is worse when first turning it on. Gets just a little better after it warms up some.

Have you switched on your CEC on your tv menu? Or whatever they called on your tv.I wouldn’t mind betting it’s your tv.Or could even be a problem on your BluRay player menu.

I too have the same issue. I got my set in 2020. Connected to HDMI 2.1. But u have mentioned, has eArc issue in controlling my projector/Tv as well as it takes quite a few secs everytime ,(may be even a min) for the video to come up especially when I go & play the video after selecting. Some times it blanks out before it pops up. It happens irrespective of Amazon fire TV stick or Apple TV

My monitor 2 does that. Ordered a splitter so I can run everything through monitor 1 that actually works. Denon has issues to say the least.

I'm willing to bet the screen blanking is caused by the AVR set to upscaling. Netflix specifically has different resolutions between the preview screen and the actual movies so a resolution switch needs to occur. When this switching is done in the AVR the screen will go dark for a second. Try switching off upscaling in the HDMI settings of the AVR. Good Luck.

It might be coz of the HDMI cable, try use a HDMI 2.1 ultra high speed cable with ethernet. That might resolve this issue.

I'm having the exact same issue even with high end 8k HDMI cables. After many months of trouble shooting, I gave up and have reached the conclusion that its the receiver. Hope someone can prove me wrong.

Hi Bro, thanks for dropping by. I managed to resolve the issue after I swapped the HDMI cable with one that is 8K certified. I think these new generation receivers require high quality HDMI connections for stable operation. Hope it helps.
