Tango v Tesla @ Infineon Nov 30th

- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- On Nov 30th, the fastest production electric vehicles in the U.S. went head-to-head. While their first meeting had a number of issues, most notably the underfilled Tango battery pack, and the Tesla's non-upgraded drivetrain, the 1/4 mile time is quite close and indicative of races to come.
In this race, the Tango got 92.15mph in 14.480 seconds, beating its 14.7 "dial" handicap and thus losing the competition; the Tesla got 101.23mph in 14.666 seconds, slower than its 14.5 "dial" handicap and allowing it to proceed to the next round. (Two rounds later, the Tango's driver got behind the wheel of the Tesla and also beat its "dial" handicap... and thus lost!)
Epilogue: the cars compete in different voltage classes, and thus both were able to set NEDRA records for fastest production electric vehicle that day. See www.nedra.com/r... The previosu NEDRA record for production electric vehicle was the GM EV-1, at 16.26 seconds and 78.76mph
What's missing in this debate, is the fact that with the Tesla, you're still stuck in traffic. With the Tango, you can split lanes like on a motorcycle, and park perpendicular to the curb. Yeah, it WAY safer as well. Top speed: 135/mph!
But Tesla can carry at least 4 people. But I love the crazyness of the tango XD
@@cl4589 You completely miss the point...
@@videojockeysword probably but what I mean is if the Tesla takes double the time on Traffic it can at least carry 4 people while the tango takes half the time and half the people. But you are right
Yeah in like 5 percent of the country you can do that
@@cl4589 That’s a Roadster, 2-seater, pretty sure that’s a joke though
The Tango is designed for racing; it has a full steel roll cage inside that meets SCCA/NHRA rules, and the doors have re-enforced steel inside, too. The seats are sparco with 4-point restraints. In theory it should be able to survive a 200mph crash without damaging the integrity of the roll cage.
that's cool
is a steel cage necessary?
@@nwnwnwnf you like to be alive... sure why not
@@nwnwnwn protect its occupants from being injured or killed in an accident, particularly in the event of a rollover.
Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that's what gets you.
Electric cars have come so far it’s incredible. This video is a piece of history.
believe it or not but this car was made in 2005
I would LOVE an updated Tango...more modern technology, some mass production, and a more affordable price, and I'd be game!
I was recommended this after donut did a video on the tango. This is awesome

WOW this is old, thanks youtube reccomendations
It's has a roll cage in it and built for a 200mph crash. Handles better than most exotics, and also has a 5 star rollover rating. You'll be fine since youre strapped in with 4 point harness in a racing bucket. And it weighs 2000 lbs.
That isn't how that works. There's no crumple zones or anything to dissipate the energy of an impact. Inside you'll take the full force of an impact. The car will be intact but you'll be dead inside of it.
too bad that the Tango is pretty much vaporware when the Tesla's competing with supercars now
Tango is still around
View in high-def; you can see the wheels start moving at almost exactly the same time. The Tesla starts slow because it has a 2-speed transmission stuck in 2nd gear; Tesla later switched to a new design that allows for much faster starts. Also, the Tesla is an AC design that never puts out more than 250hp; the Tango has twin DC motors that deliver 1000 ft-lbs of torque off the line. But the Tango's torque and HP fall off rapidly... the Tesla's HP is constant all the way up to its 125mph redline.
Hey Man
U still there
Not to be that guy, but yeah bro, pretty sure the tesla's power isn't constant, otherwise the 0mph torque would be effectively infinite, and said torque would rapidly decline.
What it is is constantly rising, the torque is constant up to a certain point (I am not sure where that point is, since it depends on the motor itself), after which it drops off, this means your power curve is, effectively, a straight line going up
@@tiagobelo4965 Oops, yes, you're right that the Tesla's power isn't constant.... if it was, then the wheels would lose traction immediately. What I should have said is that the torque is constant, with the power rising linearly... until it gets to 250hp at which point the power is a constant 250hp and the torque finally starts dropping.

@@AAA-qd8xx Of course! It's my most popular video here on UA-cam, by far!
After a few years this will be recommended to a lot of people
I know that car! That is a Tango T600. It goes from 0-60 in 3.2 second stock! And that is an ultimate sleeper.
Sleepeer a 300.000 dolars car??
The quietest drag race ever
The little car has 3,920 miles on it. The 1.5 gallons of gas it used that day are the first gas it's ever used. It's the same principle behind the Chevy Volt: if the first 40 miles are gas-free, there are a lot of people who will never need gas.
To put it another way: the point is, I can take my gas engine off when I want.
pog
Wait that has a gas engine?
@@Derek21701 No, but it has a tow hitch on the back. On the day of this race, we inserted a small platform into the hitch, and that small platform had two Honda EU generators on it. Unlike other EVs, the Tango can charge while driving, and that's how it got to the drag strip that day.
This is 2023 material now
Who's here after watching Donut Media's Tango video???

This video was ahead of its time.
With the electric car, the G force on your body is like a Nasa rocket. The GM EV1 was like that too.
Hi UA-cam, please recommend this video again in 2035...
@flipside217 I am guessing that the guy meant to say that the glass is shatter-proof from an Escalade's cadillac logo being imprinted in the side of your head.
Silent 14 second drag race
Quietest drag race ever.
wth, how can that little Tango go that fast with those small tires?
That little small car is now worth $300,000 it's fully electric it was producer around 2003 to 2005
@flodeezul They're ridiculously expensive. There's a used green one on sale for $160,000 at commutercars' web site; the slower T200 model will hopefully be available someday for around $40K. But what the company really wants to do is move into mass production and if they can ever pull that off, the price will get around $20K. (The owner wants investors more than he wants customers, at the moment)
Wow, Donut Media went back in time 14 years ago for a drag race with a Tesla of another time traveler, NICE!!
Awesome Jorg!
@KLowD9x Technically it's not a transmission; it's just gearing. Each rear wheel has its own motor, with a fixed ratio gear, so, no clutch, no differential.
that was probably the slowest drag race ever
no, not at all slow to be honest, there are drag races with shitty electric cars that take 25 seconds for the run xD 14s is no joke if compared to normal cars thats even fast
Hope the tango comes mainstream one day
It won't, only 12 were ever made and theyre no longer made
I think a lot of people miss out on the opportunity to make electrical cars look and function like a beast. Sure, it can teach top speed fast, but that's because the top speed is also crippled by the fact that it is electrical.
The second-generation Roadster (not the one in this video) can reach 250mph... is that what you mean by "crippled"?
@KLowD9x It surely was. But that was Tesla #9, and went out with a 2-speed transmission, lower gear not available. Tesla later switched to a 1-gear design & upgraded early customers - free! After the upgrade, the Tesla got down to 13.2 => /watch?v=v3Qivh-ZmzA
Later, we added some LiIon batts to the Tango and got its quarter-mile time down to 12.874 seconds (at 101mph!) - see /watch?v=GtkDHtZs8rI . The Roadster Sport was there that day, though, and got 12.643
What time did it post for the 1/4 ?
WHERES THE PLAID
bro this is filmed 14 years ago
@Anothercoilgun But does the Tango have air bags? I'm concerned with small to no crumple zones in a crash..
The aptera for example has a large front and rear crumple zone, side & front air bags...
and the Tesla I think has at least front bags.
Owned!
I wanna have that car it looks cool
Apparently nobody told the cameraman that you're supposed to zoom in on the time board after the race. Hellooooo? What was the time and trap speed?
The Tango got 92.15mph in 14.480 seconds, while the Tesla got 101.23mph in 14.666 seconds.
This isn't totally fair, though: the Tango's driver weighed less than the Tesla's driver. In a later race, the Tesla was driven by the lighter-weight driver, and so it was able to get 14.498.
14 year old videos on UA-cam is like ancient Egypt
This is epic, do you still have the tango? Wondering how they hold up over time. Had no idea it also had a gas engine, i thought they were purely electric
I kept it around 10 years, as I recall. It held up well: The only needed maintenance was tire changes. Of course, I couldn't resist other changes... like upgrading the battery with an add-on A123 Li-Ion pack, which sped up the quarter-mile time quite a bit, see ua-cam.com/video/PS-DHqGaLYM/v-deo.html
I also took two small Honda generators (EU2somethings) and connected them together to make a generator powerful enough that I could plug it into the tow hitch on the back of the Tango; this is what allowed me to go to far-away destinations. (The Tango, unlike most modern EVs, can charge while it drives, making it much easier to do this sort of thing.). Note that the Tango does not come from the factory with a gas engine.
One of them is a cool, rare, fast, two seater that can destroy some sports cars. The other is the Tesla.
@pfkgm because it use electric motor not produce sound but gas engine is make mid or loud sound
what did i just witness

the tango is faster....at least initially

The thin shape of the Tango also allows you to park in some really tight places. For example, inside of your office. Or if there's not room there, the office of your CEO => ua-cam.com/video/cs9FjfSv6Ss/v-deo.html
@jorgbrown
That's good and all, but how about the person inside surviving? does it has air bags? I really like the Tango, it is quirky like me.
the fix is in! : )
Hey Jorg, I was curious to know what kind of generators you used and if it would fit into the back of the Tango.
The Tango comes with a tow hitch on the back, which we fitted a platform to, on top of which we installed two Honda EU2000-series generators. This works because unlike the Tesla, the Tango can charge while moving.
@@JorgBrown you really just replied to a comment 14 years later. They probably forgot about this question years ago. Still interesting though.
Tesla users crying right now.
actually, i am cheering, from all the like 100 different smal electric cars i have seen, this one is mindblowing good, insane handling etc, this should be build for the masses now, the time is here, it was ahead. but a good idea is not good enough, making it is like proper hard.
still, this thing is amazing
Damn...2008 is 14 years ago...
NOTHING can beat Tango
look in the video info.....
@jorgbrown but 2007 tesla roadster have 2 speed transmission before 2008 change for single speed transmission for it because it make easy to get 3.7 sec in 2.5 than old one was 6 sec but problem in gran turismo 5 is 6 sec in tesla roadster 2008.
The Minecraft car does pack a punch
The guy who designed the Tango said it's faster than a Viper.. I'm gonna go ahead and call some bullshit.
Good for the environment? That little car had two gas-powered generators charging it when it pulled in. Funny that they still need gasoline to make electricity - so what is the point?
That Tango used lead-acid batteries, so it had a range of only 40 miles. Which is great for around town, but Sonoma Raceway is like 90 miles from my house.... so yeah, for those rare occasions, we used gas-powered generators for maximum range.
@jorgbrown how much do these cost
At the time of this video, in 2008, the Tango cost $108,000 and the Tesla Roadster was going for $100,000 plus options. Actually, technically the Tango was a "kit" where you paid $103,000 for the car without a gearbox, and then you paid "Bert's Transmission" another $5K, and then you (or your mechanic, more likely) put the two pieces together, and then went to the DMV to register your self-assembled car. (It had to be done that way because Tango Motors couldn't afford to crashtest several cars for safety regulations.)
why cant i see the video
wanting new friends IE

would you even survive in a car crash at 40 mph in one of those things..
i dont care how safe it is i'd take the tesla over that little zippy toaster anyday.

oh sheesh nm.
that was hilarious

yes combine the tesla roadster with nikola teslas wireless energy transfer and you will get 99% efficientcty and save the enviroment at the same time. i put up videos on how teslas industrial wireless energy transfer would work if your interested!!

Lol yeah the roadster is slow
no, not really, this things did 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, thats not slow at all
too ugly and too expensive!!!
tango did amazing on the roll cage, acceleration, handing, etc. But how can a car that good look so fugly?!?! the design needs some serious fixing. as well as the price.
You try designing a car with such odd proportions
Sadly, Tesla Model S Plaid could beat the Tango😔
This video came to my timeline after watching tango from donut channel, wow this brand is old as tesla....and Im glad the uploader still replying
