My great grandfather... I dearly wish I could have met him... one day it will be my turn to wear the big headdress, and when it comes, I hope to make him proud
Good to see this clip again. Chief Dan George was my husband's grandmother's cousin. He was from the Squamish Nation out of Vancouver, Canada. My husband was always proud of Chief Dan George.
"Thank You for my victories and for my defeats...Thank You for my vision, and the blindness in which I saw further. You make all things and direct them in their ways - Oh Grandfather..."
I am the one that posted this video clip. My grandmother and I use to watch this movie together until she passed. We are Alabama Choctaw. This was our favorite part of the movie. When Cheif Dan George says "The only trouble with snake women is they copulate with horses, which makes them strange to me. She say's she doesn't. That's why I call her "Doesn't Like Horses". But, of course, she's lying. " Stop the stupid shit or I will take it down. Enjoy life, and laugh. I miss my Grandma.
I grew up with this movie. People never talk about it. I was deeply moved by the plight and spirit of the Natives. Civilization needs healing, and this scene heals.
It’s a beautiful scene that made me cry with sadness and then again with happiness. Little Big Man doesn’t get much airtime which is a shame and I’m not sure why. Chief Dan George was such a great soul and spokesperson for American Indians.
Chief Dan George reminds me very much of my grandfather. I like to watch films from the past as they always bring great memories back. Thanks for posting 👍🏻
That is the way of the native side of my family. When it's your time, you challenge death to come out & fight. Every day was a good day to die. My wife is in the hospital fighting him now. I pray she wins,so I don't have to finish this life alone. I named her little dove, cause she only alights for a moment...always a smile on her face. Such a beautifull spirit should not be lost to this world.
I originally saw this in the theater in its first release (yikes - am I really that old??), and always remembered that scene, one of my favs. I also like when he's tarred and feathered by his own sister, and the numerous "Little Big Man, my heart soars like a hawk. Do you want to eat?" Thanks for posting this.
"The only trouble with snake women is they copulate with horses, which makes them strange to me. She says she doesn't. That's why I call her 'Doesn't Like Horses'. But, of course, she's lying." hahah! this movie is too classic to be true. i love it.
I also love the seen he does in Josy Wales.Clint Eastwood says _when I go to likein someone they aren't around long.Dan Goerge_ I notice when you go to disliking someone they aren't around long either.
I was just thinking that ... the long pauses, holding on without cutting away. Gives us time to take in the meaning of the scene through the actors' expressions. But the film itself is anything but 'slow', with so many adventures and characters.
Along with Atticus Finch's speech from " To Kill A Mockingbird", in court, and the closing scene from "Dances With Wolves" when Wind-In-His-Hair (Rodney A Grant) says goodbye to John Dunbar, and Ruth's death scene in "Fried Green Tomatoes"; and the Gettysburg Battleground scene from "Remember The Titans", this is on my all time best movie moments list. Chief Dan George stole this movie. Geat movie!! (Richard Mulligan as Custer was brilliant, too.)
Agreed. Great film from start to finish! So hard to pick a favorite scene. A sure sign that you are watching something special. I can never turn it off if / when I stumble upon it. They really don't make 'em like this anymore : ( "I'm going to die now - unless death wants to fight!" - Classic! : )
The name "Snake-woman" is from the sign for Comanche (which is what this wife is). The reference about copulating with horses is an old Plains Indian joke because the Comanches were among the first to embrace horses and all that they could bring. The tribe was widely regarded for the level of horsemanship displayed by both men and women. Old-lodge-skins had himself a pretty serious woman for a wife. Read the book. It is a good work of historical fiction. Lots of little details on Plains life.
The accumulation of the scenes played by actors - and then woven into a story is fiction but the facts and the history they're based off of are very true. Every scene in this movie could have happened in reality throughout history in different events across north america. So- fictional story based off real life events throughout history is the real way to describe this movie
He looks just like my great grandmother i know I have there spirit running through my veins INDIANS don't like to give up and when the going gets tough for me I just think of them and keep it moving....
i know right?! this movie has been a go-to favorite for my family for as long as i can remember. i'd certainly say the dialogues between old lodge skins and jack are what i look forward to most of all. they are just perfection. and this theory-of- a-snake-woman moment especially never fails to amuse. so glad to hear you feel the same! i'll definitely check out the other scene. much love.
I dont know why this movie doesnt get more air play and cred, its really a masterpiece. Is the storyteller one of the biggest liars ever in the old west, or did he live the most amazing experiences? The story of the war and genocide against the plains indians is well documented here. Chief Dan George I believe won a best supporting oscar, or was at least nominated. "Am I still in this World? Geeez. I was afraid of that".
Omg,, thanks id forgotten,, I guy crap for relating to this story,, my step dad,, was all it's fake BS,, Dustin Hoffman,, haaa,, That's how or honor it's stolen,, humiliation,, I ain't wear it, no more,, alone, we look wild crazed,, what person would not be crazed and wild puked from their family,, we Arrrr crazed and driven mad
Hannibal Woodward I like what you said. The clip has given the thought of climbing the mountain I have here. Dance, Prayer and Bless those who exists here in this world.
North Douglas there is an old saying, our convictions are the mountain tops from witch we scream in our youth, and the caves in which we hide in during old age.
The only problem with snake women is that they copulate with horses! which makes them strange to me. She says she doesn't but that's why I call her doesn't like horses! But of course she lying! LMAO! What a great movie!
Chief Dan George was the only Oscar nominee? Not the movie, Dustin Hoffman, Richard Mulligan, or anyone else. What in the world? Was it too controversial for the Academy members in 1970?
Truly a great scene from a great movie - I especially love the bit that you quoted here : ) I suspect that you're already familiar, but look up this scene when you have a minute: Little Big Man - "You Go Down There" - priceless exchange in this scene
Salvation for the Native to america's is and was already present. Approval or reconciliation with the modern civilization is not required for us to receive eternity in Heaven.
his snake-woman wife is comanche, the men and even woman are known to be very good with horses, mastering them, its more of poking fun of how close they are to their horses, they didnt actually do sexual things with their horses
I was about 12 when this movie was released, now I'm 63. Since the first time I saw " Little Big Man " my plan has been that on the day of my death to proclaim " this is a good day to die ". That day comes closer and closer but I'm in no particular hurry.
"Sometimes the magic works and sometimes it doesnt".one of the best lines of all time.
One of the greatest films ever made. It stands high amongst my favorites.
My great grandfather... I dearly wish I could have met him... one day it will be my turn to wear the big headdress, and when it comes, I hope to make him proud
I was named after him, but we joke that my name came from Elton John's Daniel
Every western that DIDN’T have Cheif Dan George, SHOULD have had Cheif Dan George. A true American treasure.
Canadian...@@trapperjohn6089
One of my favorite movie scenes of all time.

Please never take this down. You do the world a service preserving beauty like this, because now the world has gone crazy.
My favourite movie for years.
Thanks.

Grandfather thought he was about to die, as he also thought the Human Beings were about to die , but neither turned out to be true.

"Yes Grandfather"
"Yeeeuh.. I was afraid of that"

Chief Dan George was robbed... he certainly deserved the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 1970.
YEP!
He avenged this robbery by stealing the show every role he played.
Me, about 30 years from now. Just hope that I die with some dignity... Classic movie and a classic scene.
It makes my heart soar like a hawk to watch these clips
Little Big Man , the movie is a classic for all time in my opinion, and the scenes with Chief Dan George are priceless .
This is one of the most classic movie scenes EVER! It is a GOOD day to die :)
"Sometimes the magic works..." my favorite movie quote
One of the Best Westerns today....(class of 71) FSIS Lawton Oklahoma.
Best scene ever!
That's awesome. I always admired Chief Dan George.
This is the most beautiful scene i've seen in any movie!

Old Lodge Skins could have been a friend of mine who passed on not to long ago. He could have been praying for me. I hope he is well where ever he is
The little grunt he gives when he accepts he hasn’t passed. Resignation and acceptance.
He’s like “Eyyyyyy.”
they don't write em like this anymore. everything is fast action now a days.
I was just thinking that ... the long pauses, holding on without cutting away. Gives us time to take in the meaning of the scene through the actors' expressions. But the film itself is anything but 'slow', with so many adventures and characters.
The can't some blue haired losers would get it cancelled
One of my favorite books and films, I loved reading it in high school. Thanks for posting! :-)

Love this movie. My father roared at this scene.. "Am I still in this world?" "Yes Grandfather."..............................Jesus.
The great spirit has a sense of humor.

Ingenious.

I bet Chief Dan George did this ad lib .... and the director gets the credit . Damn he was
briliant .
That is what Eastwood said about :Josie Wales",,,,,they just let him go!

Best scene EVER! He should have gotten Best Supporting Actor!
Perhaps my favorite of all time movie scenes
The delivery was masterful.
The only problem with snake women is that they copulate with horses! which makes them strange to me. She says she doesn't but that's why I call her doesn't like horses! But of course she lying! LMAO! What a great movie!

Today Is A Great Day to Die. Thank You For Making Me A human Being...
I Pass this Way in Honor
"Wheyy! ..was afraid of that" LOL
Truly a great scene from a great movie - I especially love the bit that you quoted here : ) I suspect that you're already familiar, but look up this scene when you have a minute:
Little Big Man - "You Go Down There" - priceless exchange in this scene
Now that is some exact and amazing contribution I have ever seen!!! Thank you RIVERINE!!!! Could do a Wikipedia page just on this one clip!!!
"Of course, she's lying."
Of course Grandfather. And what a grandfather
It also reminds me of the Bill Cosby routine, "Noah", when it starts to rain ... LOL!
"Thank you for my victories...and my defeat."
I don't know what it is about this scene , I watch it often and memorized it
I too experience these things at Native American events but also in my everyday experiences with new friends I meet
this movie makes my heart soar like an eagle
This scene makes me believe more in universal Salvation as a Christian.
Why? Because rain happens?

Christ was a good man. The spirit world exists. One needs to be a good man. One's heaven is full of people just like you.
The noun has one meaning:
Meaning #1: the most outstanding work of a creative artist or craftsman
Synonym: masterpiece
I Agree 100%
EPIC FILM bravo!
I always thought Old Lodge Skins would’ve been an awesome to have as a grandad.
I have smoked on this matter. This movie makes glad to be human being.

Prophecy and Legends are in this movie (Indigenous)
Iconic moment!!!
This is the movie of them all,,,, what's sad all this did happen,,,
tres beau passage du film!!!!
this monologue made think how many of our ancestors prayed for the salvation of the native Americans
Salvation for the Native to america's is and was already present. Approval or reconciliation with the modern civilization is not required for us to receive eternity in Heaven.
the copulate with horses I am surprised they put that in there. why would they put in such a thing??? what was the purpose?

crazy how native people never feared anything, gence the name "braves" even challenging death
Yeah, but imagine how tiring that gets.
I loved that movie
I was about 12 when this movie was released, now I'm 63. Since the first time I saw " Little Big Man " my plan has been that on the day of my death to proclaim " this is a good day to die ". That day comes closer and closer but I'm in no particular hurry.
Awesome scene!
Whats the name of the movie??
Go buy the DVD too. It will be the worth it.
Can you explain this quote to me? Sorry, I'm really slow..thanks!
"It is a good day to die!" - now a GIF
Damn wether always messes to our ideal plans!
of course grandfather .... never a finer movie made.
Alguien tiene esta pelicula en español latino?
Come out and Fight! it is a good day to die!
Classic stuff.
I’ll never understand how the next line after the raindrop hits him in the eye wasn’t ‘wrong dance’. 🤦♂️
Another day Grandfather!!!
This boy is no longer a boy! He is a man and he shall be called "Little Big Man"
