A rather nerdy video this time. Me showcasing some sounds of the Yamaha QY100 that make it sound not too cheesy. Might be useful if you also have an XG enabled device lying around somewhere that's collecting dust.

Never selling my Qy70 , nothing on the market today comes close to this little amazing machine
The two things that surprise me about XG is how little the Yamaha sounds have changed over time, and how usable the stuff from the 90s still is.
I had the QY700 (like QY100 with 32 tracks) it was a great machine, but then I bought the incredible RS7000 and I still have it. Very interesting videos, I suscribed.
This is sick! Amazing how all Anjunabeats classics can fit into this tiny device.
I love the way you explain your settings. Very interesting
And it´s a shame that Yamaha abandoned the XG Standard. I´ve done so many songs in the past as well. Nice video JayB :)
Still have a Korg X5 down in the basement but lost the Power Unit. I need to get back and do some music again. Damn job..... ;)
From one Jay B to another...well done on resurrecting those XG tones. I feel XG was abandoned sadly. Awesome job man!
I love the sound of the XG Standard.
Dude, this is amazing! Thanks so much for sharing the knowledge. I've actually discovered the XG format only a few years ago, but apparently it's still very relevant. I love the fact that it's 16 part multitimbral by default, stuff that lacks in all modern synthesizers. But I never knew it could sound so good!
Finally someone managed to turn the Brass into Gold ;-) You should be nominated for the chemistry nobel price! No, honestly inspiring up to the tiptoes. Thank you JayB.
Amazing demo of this, wow! Been looking videos up on the QY100 and yours is really awesome, very much appreciated!! 😃🐀
It's awesome to see tools pushed to their limits and pull off some really creative results. You're a tru artist. Subscribed
Its amazing to me that the QY100 sounds so good, its more than 20 years old right? I would'nt mind the sounds and that reverb in my DAW, holy crap this thing virtually IS a portable DAW, while a bit limited sounds amazing!
Dude, you’re insanely talented!
This sounds soo pretty!
Man, now I want a QY100! It's so portable yet powerful synth!
I love those massive chords! Thanks so much for the upload.
Fantastic video JayB!
Fantastic video, you are such a talented musician! A++++++++++++++
talented musician and programmer!
Just dug my QY100 out, had to replace the backup battery as it's not been used for a few years!
Thanks for showing just how good the sounds can be from an older little gem. 👍😀
I so wish there would be a Motif in this format! Or even a new QY with EQ on each part and master effects!
I don't even make music but dude you got a knack for reviewing this stuff :D
Beautiful sounds, thank you for sharing!
Hey there, I've been following you for years and man you look so different now lol
I'm super jelly of your vsynth and i admire your skills
Have a great day!!
Wauh ..... Die "Wundertüte" QY 100 scheint unerschöpflich. Danke, für neue und "moderne" Anwendungen/Inspirationen.
That was great! Good job JayB. If you get your hands to Yamaha RM1x someday, do a similar video with that as well. I used to have one and I loved it. Now I'm looking to get one back :)
Thanks,
J
Thanks a million, took me a while to get the mixer sending the delay etc but really helpful video for the qy70 and qy100😎👍❤️
Hi JayB,
I'm very very interested, even if i do not get this Yamaha XG.
I'm fascinated by the abilities you have to edit a simple sound into an awesome ones...that will be very helpfull for me!
Keep it on!
Regards.

Волшебник! Мои мурашки поднимаются и убегают, а на глазах наворачиваются слезы счастья! Лайк!
absolutely great job !
Discovering new sounds by tweaking them .It’s very usefull thank you for your video..
Just love the video for the ROCCAT mousepad :3
No WAY!! I have literally this EXACT set up!! 👍 👍 👍
i have a ymf744 pci sound card that i bought for the FM chip but honestly the XG is my favourite part about it! sure it may not end up as good as your module but man doom sounds great :D
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Strings sounded so good and full.
In the background - Thief II, my favorite game;)
This is going to be perfect for my live shows
Dude, you rock!
Great video. Thank you!
Your music is such a treat on a good pair of ATH-PRO700MK2's plugged into my Sound Blaster Omni 5.1 AM/DAC.
It's also a treat to produce it on RFT BR25 or Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro through a Scythe Karma Bay fed by a MOTU Ultralite Mk III.
Nice JayB ! I play Thief 2 too!
Great review. thanks a lot mate :)
OMG My MU-80 has been waiting for this since 95 :-)
thanks for making these videos :-)
Great tips!! Thank you!!
Brilliant tutorial on editing GM sounds!!! If possible, could you make a video doing something similar editing sounds on the Yamaha AN1x or CS1x if you still have any of these synths, or another synth of your choice, please?
Great, Jay!!! +1
nice demostration (y)
Nice post!
JB should have 300k view
Thanks! I own a QY100. Trying to use it with an old M-Audio Keystation 88 es & android midi commander App along.
Thank you for this very good demonstration video JayB ... I know all the features you have explain here; I am an Owner of some Yamaha Instruments but my sounds are not so massiv .... You use another technical machine, right??
I love that it sounds like youre making geometry dash music
Thanks greatly, you've inspired me to once again try using my qy700 as a sound source. Two questions: 1) are the sound edits you make using your external controller 'remembered' in your qy song files? I'm thinking of trying to get a Keyfax Phatboy or similar, but just wanted to make sure 2) is it possible to share edited voices with others/reuse a good edited voice in multiple different songs?
A short MIDI file demonstrating those sounds in context can be found here:

Just a note: Works perfectly with S-YXG50 vsti module and Foobar2000.
veg.by/en/projects/syxg50/
DaT0nkee Except that the drums are all standard because the S-YXG50 doesn't have the Analog Kit 2. ;)
True, the drums are very General MIDI-ish indeed. But all the filter and effects magic works.
cool samples
XG was very under rated in late ~90-s becouse it want too much CPU power )) but it was incredible for a time... and also hardware XG device for pci bus was just a crap! Only CPU soft synth was real powered! I loved it
I have a qy100 and I use it mainly as a midi recorder/noodler scratchpad, I really enjoyed the tips on editing effects, I think I missed that due to its cumbersome and slightly erratic at times depending on mode, menu system. Do you have any suggestions for some kind of midi bus?Tthe daisy chaining thing only goes so far(like 4-5...)
excellent!!!
Amazing
good vidéo !!!
awsum video geza i still cant load the sounds into my jp 8080 but maybe one day i mite use it
Geile Video 👍
Von 12:10 bis 16min waren coole Melodien wäre super wenn du von sowas Paar Tracks schreibst 👌

I see you r using CME , How do you like it? Is that one of the best controllers to control QY100 as well as other older hardware romplers such as Roland JV /XV Series, etc ?
I notice you have a CME controller. They are very nice MIDI controllers.I have a CME UF5.
Can you do all these adjustments to the resonance, delay, chorus, and reverb, you're doing from the keyboard on the qy itself? I'm sure it's a million times more tedious but I'm hopeful!
Thanks in advance!
JayB, thank you for sharing. I downloaded your patch library for the Yamaha S80 but haven't yet installed it. I want to be sure not to delete any patches or performance patches since they are very good also. I could use some advise if you have a minute sometime. I'm interested in the QY unit after hearing you explain things in a couple videos.. I'm curious, is that a controller keyboard you are tweaking parameters with...are those knobs simply changing the parameters on the XG QY?
I'm guessing the knobs are for using controllers ('CC') to er.. control cutoff, res, attack, and release. Decay needs sysex for some reason.
this used to be your drummer in your band you said, is it possible to humanize the drums somehow on this device besides velocity?
15:08 the best melody!!! :)
How did you manage to assign these knobs to control realtime params. I have cs1x and its not responding to any cc's. Midi channel seems to be the same. Please help!!!
Can u use the YAMAHA QY100 as a MIDI LOOPER!! Thanks in advance!!!
nice video! question: when i look throug the list book of the QY, there is no control change number for the filter envelopes given which i saw in your video on 4:48mins. Where and how do i set this up so that i can use a midi controller to modify the sound? What i also saw was that you activate the effects on the channel by midi controller - and here again, i found no information in the list book about the control changer numbers for midi nor any other information ?
Check data list page 45+46. It's not very well listed but shows all you need. Attack is CC#73, Reverb (Effect Send 1) is CC#91 etc.
Hi, Jay!
I've bought QY100 recently, because your videos inspired me... and I freaking love this little machine.
But I have one small issue with it: the changes I make in variation effects for the song, DO NOT SAVE after turning off the unit.
For example, I make a dotted eighth note "CROSSDELAY" effect.
But after I turn the unit off and on again, the variation effects are reverting to the default delay setting. However, the other two system effects (reverb and chorus) are remaining the same as I set.
This is an indeed weird behavior. Are you sure there is no additional sysex command within the song that selects the variation effect?
@@JayBmusic I didn't look into SysEx commands.
Is there some info about how to get into SysEx in manual? Because the first thing I did after starting QY100 for the first time - I formatted the card via CARD menu, there was like 0.01 MB free. And after formatting the card I started to make a little test song.
Everything works great, but this variation effects bug is a bit distracting.
@@nickcollins9893 So what happened? Did you solve this?
@@Andybaby Sadly, I don't remember exactly how this "bug" went away... It's already, like, half a year since it disappeared. I think that I probably checked for some automation data (like SysEx, CC, or whatever else) hidden right at the start of the song.
On the newer songs I created with QY100, there was no such problem. Only on Song 1 for some reason.
@@nickcollins9893 ah cool, so it's 'solved'! :)
I love the QY 100. I found it in the trash in perfect condition. I never give it away.
Warum schmeißt jemand nen QY100 weg? Für das Teil kriegste noch dreistellig heutzutage.
Gute Frage. :-)
It’s clear its the musician that matters and secondly the gear.
@lai kivi I've heard people say that they don't like the V-synth. Claiming it sounds too digital and aliased and stuff
I'm having trouble making heads or tails of the midi spec yamaha has for these. Can you control filter, resonance etc.. with CC messages? If so which CC message numbers would those be?
They're as standard as they can be. 74 is cutoff frequency, 71 is resonance, 73 is attack time, 72 is release time and so on. If you have the QY70 list book it's somewhere around page 43.
Thanks so much! that gives me plenty to go on. Now I can use my launch control XL with it!
That makes me born again .
Can you use this xg effects only with the voices from the qy100 or also it's possible use them with the patches from another synths connected by midi? (Something like midi effects). Thanks a lot for this video, it's so useful. I wish something like this videoeffectstutorial for the yamaha An1x! Good work!!!
You can use the QY100 as an effects module. You can input your dry audio into the QY100 and it will output through the headphone jack.
@@Captyr_____ Thanks Naré, but is it mono input or stereo input?
@@danbad1380 it can be either
Great video!! Can any midi controller with knobs, control the parameters you are changing in this video?
Thanks! Any controller that supports sending standard MIDI Controller messages (CC#) will do. And that's one of the most basic features of a MIDI controller.
This question would be for the many who are in a stage of confusion of which hardware workstation to purchase. I have been for over 2 weeks looking for a music workstation that is complete with: sequencer, multi-track recorder and great sounds with editor. My budget is $1500.00 USD. I like the Roland keyboard action along with the PX-560 Casio.
I think a video from you addressing this (or you may have already) would be of help. The problem is having everything integrated but there lacks other things which makes it a deal breaker for those wanting a DAW-less environment or just too expensive. The option would be to think "components," like you have done. To add to this dilemma, the shipping cost would be prohibitive to return the item, so you would be stuck with a workstation that later you will discover is lacking in areas which are important to you. I am reading about these stories as I go reading reviews.
My first thought: pretty much anything Motif-based. New, you're looking at Montage/MOXF. The veteran S90ES and other Motif ES-based synths are getting a bit older, but still sound amazing-arguably better than the newer boards. (JayB himself still uses the S90ES.)
Hi friend, in your opinion, is the QY100 sonically better than QY70 or are equivalent? I´m not talking about the number of tones and resources, only the sound quality.
Personally I do find it better than the QY70. The 70 may have more character but the 100's sounds are more modern, more high quality.
How do I set different channels to trigger different synths?
Do you enjoy the bass sounds as bass sounds as well from this unit ?
Hi! What is your opinion on Yamaha XG vs Roland GS? Because general consensus is that Roland GS is great and Yamaha XG isn't so good.
In my opinion having heard GS and XG optimized stuff, i always preferred XG
Same actually. It appears that XG has far more potential when it comes to in depth sound editing and effectation. However, I know many people prefer the Roland sound over the Yamaha sound.
The power of knowing your tools!
Just curious how many sounds can it handel reliably at one time?
I remember an older video when you used it to sequence other hardware and things started to lag behind.
The QY's polyphony is 32 notes. But some sounds (especially the stereo voices) use two voices polyphony per note. So layering pads can quickly get it down on its knees. ;)
Good thing you're not limited in when it comes to recording anymore then. :D
yamaha xg sounds were so beautiful...i ran a midi file o deep purple highway star and the blackmore guitar part sounded just like so realistic...no other synth to this day can reproduce that to my satisfaction...too bad i cant find a sound card for my windows 10 computer that can run a xg sound card
Jay Sands Grab the VST MIDI driver and look for the SYXG50 VST. Works like a charm on Win 10 64-bit.
Agreed, I believe that last OS was XP....?
Where within the Yamaha product line can you achieve those strings? Secondly, how did you map the controller to the QY100?
Bobcatt22 Any XG enabled device released after 2001. The Stereo Strings are XG level 1 and pretty much available in any device. Secondly, standard MIDI controllers. #01 for vibration, #74 for cutoff frequency, #91 for reverb etc.
Thank you for your response - thumbs up!
Thanks for all the info. Are those 909 hats on the qy70? The dance kit hats seemed different.
Yeah, the 70 doesnt have 909 samples. Neither snare no hihats. Soundwise the 100 is a lot better IMHO, even though many people tend to differ.
@@JayBmusic Thanks. There does seem to be a 909 snare but maybe the 100 is better. The lack of groove quantize on the 100 stopped me from getting that one.
Interestingly the patch book shows they have the same sample there called "open hat 3" but just not the same source I guess.
@@medwaystudios The sample set it different, yes. Not only for drums but for most other instruments too.
What is that song you mention around 5:35 that you did entirely on the QY and where can I hear it? Thanks :)
Kandi8 - ua-cam.com/video/4OVPVBcnagA/v-deo.html
@@JayBmusic thanks for the prompt reply - great trance track! And amazing all done on QY 100 too.
Wizard of sound. That's what I call "polishing a turd". Sounds great after editing.
hi ya do you know if the xg card will have these sounds on the cs6x?
yoll d Yeah, this is possible. But I'm not sure it's necessary since you can do the same sounds with the CS6x alone.
Alright, another question. I got a QY70 hooked up to my Electone EL90, and it works nice. But I want to take advantage of the Aftertouch functionality. Using monitoring software I've confirmed that it is putting out the aftertouch midi commands, the QY70 appears to be receiving them, it records "CAT" midi commands, but it's not effecting anything. Volume, pitch, nothing changes depending on how hard I'm pressing the keys.
Any ideas?
By default aftertouch isn't assigned to anything in XG. However, using SysEx commands you can change that. I don't know the exact commands right now but you need to insert them to channel 1 using the edit function. Maybe I make another video about that one day.
Ah interesting. I'll check that out!@@JayBmusic
Okay, I was able to look now:
Edit -> Insert -> XG Exc Multi -> and there you find parameters starting with CAT (channel aftertouch) followed by cryptic letters:
CATP-C = Channel Aftertouch Pitch Control
CATF-C = Channel Aftertouch Filter Control
CATA-C = Channel Aftertouch Amp Control
and then the same for the LFO depth (hence the "D" at the end). Set the affected channel and the offset, insert it into the song (by pressing Enter), exit all and play the song so the parameters get sent to the tone generator. After that there should be effect.
However, these settings need to be resent each time there was an XG reset (=after every song switch and of course after every reboot) because these settings aren't stored in the QY's actual user interface.
Hey that worked out really well, btw! Thanks! I'm currently making really horrible sounds from having tied the aftertouch to the pitch control. @@JayBmusic
In terms of number and quality of sounds, which Yamaha MU module is closest to the QY-100?
Actually there's none that's _really_ comparable. At least MU128 and later have a newer set of sounds over the precious models (which are closer to the QY70) however, the QY100 still has an even newer set of sounds which you hear especially in pianos and drums.
@JayB Thanks - one more question - when playing the arranger track, is it's MIDI data present at the MIDI output? I'm looking to use it as a scratchpad, so I'm comparing it to devices like the MC-101and MC-707.
@@jbognap Yes, pretty much everything can be sent to Midi out. However, pattern tracks are a bit tricky. Internally they're track 17-24 which can't be transmitted to MIDI, so you can optionally rojte them to channels 1-8 or 9-16, which again means that you can't really use these tracks in song mode.
leds and pads соll
I have an XG keyboard, but all the XG functionality is kind of hard to access with it. What kind of midi controller can I use to make it easier? I'm a total newb at this stuff.
Excellent question... TBH I don't know of any keyboard that lets you dive deeply into the XG universe. I mean sure, everything you can do with MIDI controller data, like cutoff, resonance, attack, release, portamento... But effect settings or pitch EG and everything are a different topic. Software like XGedit, XG Gold or XGworks are a better option here.
Found a solution. I bought a QY70.@@JayBmusic
@@JayBmusicI'd love to realtime manipulate the envelopes and everything else on my Yamaha cs1x please elaborate on how to set it up. I'm using ni kore2 sending CC's to cs1x but it's not responding to it.
Wow
Very nice music tech material here... nerdy video my ass :)
Is that CoolEdit Pro in the background? :>
Bon Bon It's Adobe Auditon. But yes, in former times this was called Cool Edit Pro.
I just found an old pci sound card w a Yamaha XG chip on it. We'll see what happens.
