    Great stuff! Hooking up controllers to my old Yamaha MU10 (plus several other bits of old gear) in this way has saved me hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dollars over the years - I no longer feel the urge to buy any new gear. Looking forward to the GM video - MIDI is ‘the pinnacle of human achievement’ in my view!👍

      Thank you! Working on the GM video. I did a "just talk" thing and after watching it myself, I decided I definitely need to cut out all the uhms and erms and awkward pauses and provide some B-roll to make it watchable. ;-) Hope to get it out today.

    Love your videos on the QY series. I have a QY100 and trying to use it with Cubasis 3.6 on an IPad. I can sewuence the qy but cannot figure out how to make the sliders and knobs work without a direct connection to the QY100 if that is even possible. I'm using a Korg nanokontrol studio with Cubasis but it only affects the internal Cubasis instruments. If you could give me some hints that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  Рік тому

      Hi, it's been a while that I used Cubase.
      Basically, one track must be armed and listen to your nanokontrol's MIDI channel. It's MIDI output should be routed to the QY100's MIDI input. CC filters have to be inactive.

    Hello Floyd ! And thanks a lot for this tuto ! I've started syncing my QY70 with other gear, using the QY70 as the master clock (midi out to a JU-06a) and it's really smooth ! Also sending the audio out of the QY70 into the mix in 3.5 stereo jack of the JU-O6a, also works very well. Then I decided to control the QY70 with a Fatar VMK 188 Plus (very sweet keyboard btw), I have been able to assign every knobs and sliders as you demonstrated in this video : again, works like a charm, thank you !.. BUT... when I play a pattern and/or use the internal mini keyboard on the QY70, the volume is 2 or 3 times louder than when I play notes using the midi controller... That is very weird since I assigned the right MIDI ctrl values (1-127 on the volume) on the keyboard, and even when I use the slider assigned to the volume, it lowers the volume of the notes being played by the QY70's keyboard and the note being played by the Fatar keyboard too... but it remains that 2 or 3 times volume difference... And when I REC a pattern using the internal keyboard and some notes played on the Fatar keyboard, the volume difference between the two is also recorded ! Any idea where It could come from ? Thanks a lot for your help !.. and Happy new year ! :)

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, thank you very much and a happy new year to you as well!
      Just an educated guess on my behalf:
      Go to the step sequencer. Look in the top center of the screen. There's a "ramp" icon there which shows you the velocity the internal keyboard is set to. You can change that with the plus and minus keys, and it will retain that value outside of the step sequencer as well.
      Best regards!

    • @antoinecormier4436
      @antoinecormier4436 2 роки тому

      @@mr_floydst Wow ! Thank you for that VERY quick response :) ... I tried that velocity "hack" and that works ! But that doesn't change the velocity of all the phrases I have already recorded, I can live with that (that means that I'll have to record again some of my preferred patterns), but there is one major flaw, the idea is that I want the QY70 to go in the mix-in of the JU-O6a, if I reduce the velocity on the QY70 (I need it to be at the minimum to match the Fatar) then the Juno will be way too loud for the Yamaha :( ... it seems there is no separate volume control between the JU-06a internal sounds and the mix in ! I think there is a velocity ctrl I need to adjust somewhere for that Fatar midi controller !

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  2 роки тому

      You could also use the "continuous controller" function in the QY70 to fix velocity.

    I have the ultimate question, lol : Can you record these automations back into the QY 70? (Sending data to a different channel and track) I would like to hear your opinion (or tests) how to make tons of automations on these things. Crazy enough I took a deep breath and bought a QY 700 on Reverb in good shape (but a bit expensive)...still waiting for it but checked the manual and you can do voice editing on that too, the question is how to record those animation without going back to Cubase....which, I guess, one could still do if it's too complicated in the sequencer. It would be fun to animate all the usual stuff, (cutoff-reso, ADSR on the QY700) It's also crazy that one can edit the drums voices on the QY 700, so one can have a drum machine with a big display.
    I wonder if the sequencer would suffocate if it would need to process tons of automation data at the same time. 🙂

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  Рік тому +1

      Yes, you can choke the sequencer by spamming control data.
      You can easily record automations ... by hitting record and doing stuff on your midi controller. I'd rather just copy a track / a sequence instead of building a midi loop ;-)

    Two questions:
    -Is there an all in one (maybe cheap) keyboard with knobs to control a qy70/100 in an effective way? The Nanocontrol Is ok but you missed the keyboard.

I was wondering how I could connect a battery-powered keyboard that allowed me transport controls and keys, so I could avoid using and wearing out its QY's original keypads, as I got a collector's one, almost new. How are you connecting the Korg controller to the QY? I was considering the Alesis vortex wireless of the Korg MicroKontrol but with keys. But I don't want to habe to rely in the mains. Is the Alesis the only option ? How can I connect the Korg if it is usb?

    Hi! Did anyone try to use the software XGworks to change parameters on the QY70? I can't get it to work and I tried every combination of MIDI settings on the QY. I can't find any info online either. The QY70 has a profile that you can select in XGworks but nothing I try works properly. For example I select a patch on one of the tracks of the QY in XGworks and either it changes back to the default piano or percussion sound after the pattern stops or it plays the new patch at the same time with the standard patch on the same track somehow. Also muting tracks and changing the volume faders in XGworks doesn't affect anything. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  2 роки тому +3

      I don't think you can do this with just a MIDI controller. You could assign volume changes to toggle buttons, but then you'd face problems with channels that have an individual volume.
      It seems there is no sysex message for channel mute in the QY100/70, too.
      So all you can do is:
      a) assign volume sliders and use them as a "mixer"
      b) use a raspberry pi/arduino to read the current volume of a channel, set it to zero and remove all volume changes from your midi data "on the fly". (that's really complicated)

      Thanks for watching! The Nanokontrol is a nice tool to have.

    Ok, so I made a great preset ('voice'). How do I save it, so I can use it in another pattern/song? ps thanks for the video!

      I think the only way to save that is within a song or sequence. There are no slots for user sounds on this box.

      @@mr_floydst Wow, I've been rtfming (and googling) and I think you're correct, though it does seems like a strange omission. Thanks for the response!

    what software did you use?

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  10 місяців тому +1

      Korg's Nanokontrol editor. But depending on the controller you use, you'll need the whatever editor your vendor provides.

    Wish there were an equally straightforward way to do this for the individual drum sounds! Especially with the QY70, since they blocked editing of some of the drums directly on-device, only accessible via MIDI. Afaik, there isn't a modern midi controller that can be configured to use a variable NRPN parameter, based on the last note played.. Probably wouldn't be the hardest thing to do w/ an Arduino 🤔.

      Thanks for your feedback! I think there are videos on this on UA-cam already, I'll link them here if I re-find them.
