Aster’s films are amazing looking. Technical-wise, I think he’s right at the top of best directors. As for story telling, I feel he’s often very derivative and trying to re-do things that were already done very well by previous filmmakers.
i'm soooo Stupid, i watched this Short without knowing that it was made by Ari and i was like : "Wow, this really reminds me of Beau is Afraid, even the way it's shot, plus the Actor kinda sounds like Joaquin Phoenix especially at 5:28, whoever directed this needs to make some ari aster type movies, cause they're great at it." 😐
Waiting for "Beau is afraid" like almost everyone else ... If it could only look a bit like this one, with Joaquin vomiting his guts like this sweet bum...
@@elgozk ... with this short one ?... I didn't see the movie yet... but critics annoy me... Whatever, I needn't them to have my own opinion... Let's wait ...
@@ZEU9092 Hope you gon' like it, i actually was watching this short without knowing it was made by ari aster and all the way throught it i was like "Wow this reminds me so much of Beau id Afraid, i love it". The Film definitly has the Same Vibe as this Short, Ari aster classic right there
I don't know how much sense this makes but I noticed all of Ari Asters work has common themes: -Messed up families -heads coming off -the colour yellow He also likes to put a lot of emphasis on doorways/entranceways by putting them centre frame.
Nobody seems to have said it: the German word "unheimlich", mentioned in the end is somewhat well translated with un-home-like if you go syllable by syllable. However, the word actually translates to eerie/ominous.
I really wish this character wasn't like actually a murderer. I've noticed a lot of ari aster movies walk the line between demonizing mental illness and just portraying it in honest ugliness but this is definitely just demonizing. everything else about this character is incredibly realistic. schizophrenic people make up 10‰ of the homeless population but mentally ill people of any kind are FAR more likely to be the victim of violence than to perpetrate it.
His work has a black comedy element to it. We don't dwell on the handyman or the man he shoots, they're beats, pauses or illustrate different elements of the monologue. If he intended this to be a verbatim portrayal, then yes it would be vulgar (it is, but that is where the comedy, tragedy and horror intersect with the sensitivity and nuance) We make choices of inclusion and exclusion, what you relinquish to make your story work.
this is really well made satire. as someone who has struggled with being homeless on and off for 3 years, i found it truly funny. this is capitalism right here. didnt think the ending was necessary tho... that was a weird curveball
It probably wasn't really his daughter. He's an unreliable narrator. What should hit hard is that it could have been his daughter if not for the misfortune and lack of compassion from our society. He's discussing his huge, colorful dreams and then trails off. And then he says that. The idea that something so possible is a huge, colorful dream (or at least hinted to be via juxtaposition) is very sad.
I feel like this was more of a dark reality than a dark comedy, but was shot in a "comedic way" if that makes sense. This is real and it happens right in front of us, and most people don't know or realize it unless they know someone who's been through it or dealt with it. The actor is trying to point it out at one point, how we all look at the ground all day as life passes by. I feel like the point of filming it this way was *in fact* to "fly over people's head", like reality does. That's what I took from this anyway.
Stupendous commentary! I caught a whiff of George Karlin.
The correct impact..... mass applaud 👏 bravo
real.
It's the birthday boy stabber!!
Birthday boy stab man!

Gotta love Frank Ghallagher
Frank Gallagher back at it again.

Also ya notice the door matts used in hereditary are all over his movies? And some shorts
Fight Club vibes huh?
Holly shit when he got hit by that car
Can't decide whether he reminds me more of George Carlin or William Friedkin.
He loves having people hit by a car
This was obviously a Carlin inspired film
Major Frank Gallagher from Shameless vibes!
"Even now when I sleep I have dreams that would make you cry."
Hits like a truck
He really said “it’s because you be on that phone”

Uncanny
Ari loves the idea of people burning doesn’t he
I just watched a bunch of aris shorts and I find myself SOBBING
George Carlin has a homeless man hits the spot!
This short film is one helluva George Carlin routine.
Daniel Lopatin or James Ferraro should have made the score for this.
Oh wow. Lls
Omg. Im so glad I watched his short videos. I hated Midsommar. Loved Hereditary. This guy is crazy
why did you hate Midsommar?
1:16 I wonder if thats a genuine encounter with an actual security guard
Same
It wasnt

We aren't supposed to believe everything we see here.
@@ScottCreley I agree entirely, because he's clearly an unreliable narrator. It's brilliant, I've watched it several times already. It blew me away.
Would you not demonize a society that hates you
We're seeing what he wants to do. Not what he's actually doing.
I carry a credit card, no change. Soz
5:56 sounds familiar...
Ari is the master of all things dark and macabre. Horror, comedy, drama... WTF 😆 genius.
Hahah when he got hit by the car!
This was beautiful
So many people in the comments section seem to have not paid attention in the video.
George carlin doppelganger 😂

I think it was kind connected with his previous statement, as he said that he had colorful dreams where... And complete with "That's my daughter".
