Scary Monsters had Bowies D.A.M. crew on the album. Dennis Davis on drums, Carlos Alomar on lead and rhythm guitar and George Murray on bass. Robert Fripp on guitar. On Teenage Wildlife it's Chuck Hammer on guitar synthesizer and Roy Bittan on piano.
This song becomes better and better and better the more you play it. One of my faves of his but took years to reveal itself. Such a unique vocal delivery too.
Not a brilliant album but easily one of his best 10 songs IMHO, but then again I could list 50 songs. By the way , after much deliberation drive in Saturday so great followed by another 49. Take care mate
YES!! Love it. Thank you for reacting. His voice..OMG.... I LOVE HIM! I can feel this song. It feels like I'm watching a theatrical performance. The music....the background...everything...Great reaction...as usual. Are you thinking about "Young Americans"? Also The Thin White Duke was one of his characters. By the way, Young Americans (the full album) ranks high for me. So much soul and some funk too. Thanks Todd! Love on ya!⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
Maybe not his most popular, but my absolute favorite. I bought all his albums back when I was pestering neighbors for returnable soda bottles to collect the deposits and go to the record store. I bought Ziggy, Heroes, but I think I wore the grooves off of my Scary Monsters album. Watching you fumbling with the tech just made me more invested.
The wailing guitar is Robert Fripp who is now 76 years of age but still one of the best rock guitarists ever. Fripp played on Heroes and you can hear echos of that on this track also. SMASC is one of my favourite Bowie albums. Teenage Wildlife is unique BUT a very hard listen: the song has no refrain, its verses end only when punctuated by the title phrase and a Robert Fripp wailing guitar. Where did Bowie get that "voice" from Todd? Have you ever heard anything like it before? I haven't, or since. I would guess some people will love and others will loath it. BTW I am loving your posts.
This song is partially a shot at his critics, who were angry at him for evolving his style, and partially a shot at the New Romantic and New Age folks like Steve Strange and Gary Numan, who were in large part repackaging Bowie's style without the substance ("One of the New Wave boys / Same old thing in brand new drag").
Hi Todd , brilliant reaction, I know Pete Townsend played guitar on some of this album, they say that this particular song was a dig at the New Romantic era, great album though , I recommend the station to station album , keep rocking
The Sales brtohers were drums and bass. I think you were thinking about Reeves Gabrels who was the lead guitarist in Tin Machine as well as on a lot of Bowie's 90s output.
Hiya Todd,listen/watch video of the track, No Plan, one of his very last songs he recorded. So poignant, sad. Released after he had sadly passed away on an E.P. which came after the release of, Black Star.I find it absolutely incredible that he completed all this final work considering that he knew he didn't have much longer to live and that during the recording of the album he had to be given oxygen in the studio throughout. You often remark on his brilliant vocals,,listen to his isolated vocals from this album (just his solo voice without the music)beautifully heartbreaking. In fact try listen to many of his songs in the same way especially, Space Oddity,=fantastic.
I've always wondered who is actually playing what guitars on this tune since it came out all those years ago. Of course Fripp is there along with Alomar and Hammer but who's doing exactly what is what I'd like to get a better handle on. I know Fripp was the lead but I think he shared some of those solos.
Most underrated track on a generally underrated work. My favorite Bowie album after Lodger. Let's Dance was an enjoyable album but not anywhere near as artistic (IMHO).
Hi Todd ! For a glimpse at Bowie at his most experimental AND rock, try almost anything for his album "1.Outside" : Hallo spaceboy, The heart's filthy lessons, I'm deranged, The voyeur of utter destruction... And for straight-up rock songs, his 2013 album "The next day" is a sure pick ;) !
This is the seminal track on S.M.S.C. This was after the Berlin trilogy and Bowie was earning monet out east, so lots of referenced to ugly Chinese billionaires. So funny.
Yes there a few similarities to Heroes at the beginning, but it soon becomes a completely different song , a great song that becomes better the more you play it. He wrote this attacking all the new wave artists in the 70's and 80's he felt were plagiarising his music. e.g. Gary Numan.

The guitarist is the extraordinary Robert Fripp!!!!!!

totally agree!
Great song. This album was packed with excellent music .
Absolutely brilliant song from a brilliant album

That was Fripp, I almost said something but didn't. This is so cool!

My favourite Bowie song. I don't think his voice ever sounded better.
One of my favs. Love his Bowie histrionics on this
His vocals are insane
Sounds like Heros because it's Robert Fripp
Up there in best ever Bowie vocal territory for me as a long time super fan.

Townsend played on one song and it's obvious when you hear it. "Because you're young"
Magnificent song. Incredible song writing and vocal performance. Superb Guitars from Robert Fripp. Great reaction .

This track is insane.
The guitars create the unique expression of this track. Thank you Robert Fripp and Carlos Alomar! Extraordinary artists!
I absolutely love this song! But I didn’t at first.
Robert Fripp was the guitarist.

Powerhouse
Fact: Bowie songs get better on repeated listens.
Truth!
He is a hard first listen because there are so many layers to his music.
Do your homework for god's sake, almost lost me
This is my homework, Thanks for hanging out, Todd
