Like many of bowie’s albums, this is best taken in as an entire album. The song that follows (sweet thing/candidate..) is one of his finest moments….and one of his best vocal performances ever. The song is like a movie in itself. No one writes like that. For my money…greatest artist of our time
One of these days you need to check out Bowie's Pin Ups album. He does covers of groups he used to hear in clubs that influenced him. The Who, Pink Floyd, and others.
George Orwells widow refused to give Bowie permission to do a musicsl based on his classic book 1984. So Bowie wrote Diamond Dogs as a dystopean future in decay, set in Hunger City, and used some of the songs intended for the musical on the second side - We Are The Dead, 1984, Big Brother. The cover is a gatefold sleeve. You need to see the whole picture, not just the front half. It was originally baned in the USA and a certain part had to be airbrushed out for release!
If you can, David Live at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia is the best live album (IMO) he made. Sweet Thing, Candidate, Sweet Thing Reprise is song that has dueling guitar and saxophone in it. Check it out. It’ll be worth the trip. Aladdin Sane is another great album. Early 70’s was Bowie’s best work, again, IMO. 🖖🍻
50's?....This was early 70's... used to go to a club that played this every night...great dance music. When Station to Station tour rolled in, went to that too. Bowie makes the big impression anywhere you hear him...whenever you hear him.
Always loved this album, great album opener, regarding "Future Legend", I loved the musical nod to 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered during the narration. Great vibe on 'Diamond Dogs'.
I haven’t been a junkie for 10 years. I too should’ve been dead many times. Although, yours sounds more painful. Glad to see you’re doing it while you’re still young. I am also very happy and do not miss the old days.
I think I was around 6th grade when this album came out. My older cousin had quite the record collection and this album cover fascinated me - it was a gatefold .
I remember my older sister had this album, and went to Philly to see Bowie on this tour. Bowie was a superstar in the UK at the time, but he was still seen as some kind of weird alien by many in America. But this album helped boost his cred in the states, at least on the east coast, because of how it blended Velvet Underground grime with blue eyed soul.
Although Bowies "alternative" 1984 production after the Orwell estate rejected his plans, this album (and title song in particular) always reminds me of the Charlton Heston movie Omega Man. Set in post apocalyptic USA where Heston lives at the top of a building to avoid getting caught by the infected population. Anyway, Sweet Thing is a true masterpiece. Give it a go!
Totally agree. I have always rated Aladdin Sane above Ziggy, as harder, sexier and sleazier. At least listen to the title track and the crazy piano solo!
This is my go to live version of Diamond Dogs: ua-cam.com/video/cOvE-rXYgug/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared The same livealbum has some really muscular versions of Stay and Station to Station
Don't forget the post-apocalyptic tinge to it and also the echoes of m.a.d. doctrine,🙃 Vietnam and the Cold War to name one or of two of the influences of the time......
Nice choice. I would recommend you listen to Sweet Thing-Candidate-Sweet Thing (Reprise) from the same album. One of the best things Bowie ever did IMHO.
David originally conceived the Diamond Dogs album as a stage musical version of George Orwell's novel, 1984. Orwell's estate, specifically Mrs Orwell, would not grant permission to David for the project, so he salvaged what he could and created this album.
As a drummer, you may want to get to know the drummer here- Aynsley Dunbar. He started with John Mayall and Jeff Beck, auditioned with Hendrix, played with Zappa, was a founding member of Journey, etc., etc.
Glad to see you are reacting to something from Diamond Dogs. Love your reactions to Bowie's works so far. This album is probably in my top 3 Bowie's album, right after Low and Station to Station. If you plan to proceed with this album, please do the next 3 tracks (Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)) together as they are meant to be a suite. Bowie delivered a equally stunning and haunting vocal performance with that.
Definately avoid any streaming service that puts a pause between the 3 songs in the suite, as they run together on the album. One of Bowies greatest vocal performances.
Every album from Bowie is a completely different trip. He not only changed characters, he changed sounds. Every time I'd get a new Bowie album I would be momentarily disappointed that it didn't sound like his last, which had become a favorite. Then, after a listen or two, the new album would "open up to me" and become my favorite... and the cycle would begin again. lol
This album is one of Bowie’s most unpolished albums.(love it) Perhaps because he does so many of the instruments himself. Normally he would bring in someone better than himself, and not doing lead guitar eg.
Unpolished? Can't agree with that. Excellent production throughout and Bowie's dirty guitar mix (almost Keith Richards like) adds to the overall dark tone to the album.
The concept is a 1984-like dystopian world ---hence the songs "1984", "We Are the Dead" and "Big Brother". I love that David's guitar and sax are dirty sounding....which really matches the concept.
Damn, I missed the premiere. Good old rock and roll. Such a versatile artist, actor, all the above. So talented, so sadly gone. 😢❤ That he could pull this off and his later stuff with such aplomb. This is yet another marvelous journey, Lee, and one of the most fascinating people ever. ❤
Dude please TURN IT UP. Saw Bowie; he was freakin glorious. Plus THE cleanest loos at an outdoor gig I have ever seen. Steam cleaned every half hour, hot water, soap! Soo classy David, a class act.
@@L33Reacts When I saw Queen I had to hold my pee in for TWELVE HOURS!! The loos were a nightmare from the get go, unusable. And it was August. Hardly dare drink anything as nowhere to pee. I went behind a bush on our way out and could not care less who saw me by then.
Diamond Dogs was the first album I ever bought. I was ten at the time, in 1977. I only bought it for the cover but wow, it opened up a whole new world of music for me. I still have it and I still listen to it.
As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent, you asked for the latest party
sweet thing candidate sweet thing reprise MASTERPIECE
Thank you, I was coming down to write what you wrote!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So happy you are delving into Diamond Dogs. I saw the tour in 1974 in Anaheim, CA. One of highlights of my teen years!
I was there! I saw Bowie at least 6 or more times in concert, best times of my life 🤘🎶
David played all guitar and sax on this track.
This album showcases Bowie’s incredible vocal range and musical talent. So many amazing songs!
You said Thin White Duke but was the next album Young Americans. This album he inhabited the persona "Halloween Jack"
One of these days you need to check out Bowie's Pin Ups album. He does covers of groups he used to hear in clubs that influenced him. The Who, Pink Floyd, and others.
THIS AIN'T ROCK AND ROLL! THIS IS GENOCIDE!

Oh I saw it don't worry ... had to make a thumbnail and download the album cover. I saw the full one. Ick lol
Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family !
I love when Bowie gets all science fiction.
If you can, David Live at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia is the best live album (IMO) he made. Sweet Thing, Candidate, Sweet Thing Reprise is song that has dueling guitar and saxophone in it. Such a jammin song!

Such a fantastic album, wat ahead of its time
Always loved this album, great album opener, regarding "Future Legend", I loved the musical nod to 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered during the narration. Great vibe on 'Diamond Dogs'.
This is my favourite Bowie album.. sweet thing / candidate is amazingly good!

David Bowie was a songwriting genius.

Back from the days when a "loop" was a loop of recording tape snipped and taped together in a short little circuit.
Beyond what any man deserves
this was a good song to listen while trippin on some good ol acid

Worth looking at the reverse side of the cover, lol
Real playing no auto tune
What're we talking about 1974?
I had this on an eight track when that was state of the art
Some of those girls did and do wind up Dead. RIP
turn the cover over to the backside and you''ll be more freaked out
Lyrics of the era, within certain circles .. Marc Bolan or Lou Reed could have written this.
Continue the album, brother.
Aladdin Sane is better, again do the album my friend. I'm biased but there's no bad tracks.
Totally agree. I have always rated Aladdin Sane above Ziggy, as harder, sexier and sleazier.
At least listen to the title track and the crazy piano solo!
Mightiest my germ ghtmight remember then.....
Look at the back of the album if you want to get more creeped out.
by Guy Peellaert (belgian artist)
The original US version airbrushed his dick!!

Don't get outta hand.hope in im ok just drink a few or more

Oh Christ Almighty.....the "Diamond Dogs" album is an absolute MASTERPIECE. Been listening to it for nearly 50 years. 😀

He also had his Aynsely Dundar Retaliation. Oh yea Steve Perry got him fired with his power control attitude. Jim
'The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation '
A Great forgotten /unknown British blues band
On a par with "Peter Greens' Fleetwood Mac in my opinion!!..

Great album. Bowie was fascinated with George Irwell's 1984 and wanted to make an actual musical of it and this was the result.
Suggestions for the next song to review would be Rebel Rebel which is the best song on this album in my opinion and was a huge hit❤
Love this album! David Bowie at his otherworldly best.
“Watch that Man” off of his Aladdin Sane album is great rock n’ roll
An album worth a deep dive!! Bowie is a legend ❤
MY FAVORITE ALBUM!!! you should listen to the whole album
It’s an armageddon concept album. Great album.
This album is one of Bowie’s most unpolished albums.(love it) Perhaps because he does so many of the instruments himself. Normally he would bring in someone better than himself, and not doing lead guitar eg.
I thought that was so cool he did the guitars. They sounded great! So did the sax. He's a great musician.
Unpolished? Can't agree with that. Excellent production throughout and Bowie's dirty guitar mix (almost Keith Richards like) adds to the overall dark tone to the album.
Saw this tour at Madison Square Garden and it was an amazing concert!!

When that came out his amorphous look confused and disturbed my 16 yr old mind, but the music was undeniable.
the original LP album cover folded out and the back end of Bowie’s body was a dog.
This is the worst song on the album in my opinion.
Weakest track of the album Im afraid.
Bowie was a sax player don't know he did it on this though
Wouldnt be no Deftones were it not for DD.
VOLUME UP
