I got my Edifier R1855DB today. I can't believe I am still amazed at how music can be this beautiful, a tremendous upgrade from my previous speaker (Marshall Stockwell 2). The bass woofers are incredible, which makes R&B....R&B. GOOD SPEAKER FOR UNDER 150 DOLLARS! If anyone still hesitates about getting their speaker due to a low budget, this speaker is the right one.
You just can't beat the bang for buck with Edifier. I recently upgraded from a yas-107 sound bar, which according to reviews was the best soundbar under $200. I was pretty unimpressed though, and recently I've upgraded to the Edifier s350db, for a mere $100 more, and I can't imagine ever going back to soundbars. Furthermore, I think the classier look of powered bookshelf speakers are far more attractive than every generic looking soundbar.
Just ordered a pair of these, can't wait to try them out... Looking forward to moving in my own place soon, these with my other toys will keep me entertained while I'm home....
I have these speakers (actually mine are the very slightly upgraded R1855DB version) in one room of my house with a Sony Bravia 4K UHD Smart TV connected via 3.5mm to one of the analogue RCA inputs (I can also use an optical cable but I prefer the analogue). I also have a Sony BluRay player connected via the coaxial input for for use as a standalone CD player (a HDMI cable facilitates traditional DVD and BluRay disc playing). I also have a vinyl record player connected via the other analogue RCA input. And then Bluetooth v5 input completes the set for me, making these Edifiers probably one of the most versatile, excellent quality, value for money speaker sets that are out there available on the market.
I don't understand the benefit of the DAC32. If I connect the R1850DB to an optic source it will use its internal DAC which is optimized specifically for these speakers. Those also have a DSP and DRC. What am I missing here?
You still need a good DAC to get better sound and in case you want to combine with the edifier's T5 sub, a DAC is needed to overcome the weak signal output to T5. leading to a situation where the T5 will not work at low volume levels, however if you do not need an additional sub to create a 2.1 system, the DAC seems unnecessary.
Excellent review. Thank you for the very valuable information. I have just come across the Argon Audio Fenris A4. They seem to be in the same price range, but I have never heard of them? Do you have any thoughts on these bookshelf speakers?
This was so good and you have great presence on camera :) Enjoyed and subscribed. :) I'm sorry but I don't understand what the DAC does really. Not an audiophile.
Thank you very much! 👍 A DAC converts the digital signal (for example from a Spotify stream) into an analogue signal that can be played through the speakers. Welcome to the channel! 😃
hi i am thinking on going with the S3000Pro speakers to hook up to my TV ...is that a good choice ? will my TV sound awesome ? or is it overkill....thx cheers from Canada
Depends on how you like your rock. Poor recordings will sound decent, and indie is definitely helped, but it you want more attack and aggression you might be better off with the S2000. 🪨 🎶 🎸
Can i use this speakers as a "cheap" studio monitors, i do a researching all day and found this speakers had the sound i liked. But here a thing, can i plug this speakers into my 2i2 Focusrite gen 2. If it can, how can i gonna make it work? And will i make any harms? Besides, i have a idea that to change 3.5mm cables into 6.5mm so then i can plug in my soundcard? Does it work? Or maybe i basically just plug into a pc. Anyway thanks for great review video, u make so clearly !!! Love it alot It would gratefully if u answered all my questions 😭😭❤️❤️
Are these good for listening to rock and metal ? Also do you need an amp or soundcard or anything like that or do these work for laptop and pc out of the box ?
They are ok for that, but when I listen to rock and metal I turn it up LOUD - I’d be looking for something from Klipsch to really rock out 🎸 Assuming you have Bluetooth on your laptop, you are ready to roll!
Since speakers are 100% omni directional in the bass, front or back ported, I have a very hard time understand why these or any speakers should be easier to place because they are front ported. At least we know they sounds good, wtf now that means,, 🤪🤣🤣🤣.
If a speaker is rear ported and backed up against a wall it can get more boomy from port resonance reinforced by the wall. It won’t eliminate it, but gives a speaker a better chance of having cleaner bass front ported against a wall. Fair point about what ‘good’ means, I do say it a lot in the review - and you have to factor that these are mid-fi rather than purist HiFi - good means nothing offensive, enjoyable, easy to listen to, while you can still get your groove on. A nice midrange centric sound that is Bose like.
Hi Imran, I use a Sonos Playbase with two play ones as surrounds. It’s unobtrusive to the lounge so the wife approves! Really want to get my hands on the Klipsch Cinema 1200 when it comes out though, that looks like a beast!
I’m definitely not a Bose hater - I quite like an easy to listen to speaker. These Edifiers aren’t ‘proper’ HiFi, but super easy to use and very likeable - and (in HiFi land) a bargain!
I used to be crazy with hifi since young with Exposure, Naim,Sondek etc.... Now that I'm old, I just need something musical instead of precision. Will this active speaker be good enough ?
It’s definitely musical, although you might want for a bit more resolution as a recovering audiophile! I’m reviewing the 2000 Pro model soon, that might be just the ticket!
I’ve got a pair of steljes audio ns3. Do you think the Edifier R1850DB’s are better and worth swapping to? Would you recommend anything better than both for under £300?
I’m almost certain it’s all digital at this price point. (It still sounds better with the DAC32 in the chain regardless, but I agree the signal conversion chain isn’t optimal) You are right that a number of digital sources could be used and could indeed improve the output. In this video I was trying to demonstrate an option that kept the edifier in bargain territory whilst also expanded its use case (Roon, AirPlay).
Hello , i have the 1855db (same as 1850) , but when i listen some type of music (especially ROCK / POP ROCK) the basses are disturbed and i hear a huge loudness sound and voices are near unaudible... i dont understand why but the sound is super clear on other music (techno / trap... ) . i use optic cable on my PC. Can you help me?
It’s actually the poor preamp on the Nikon camera we use, but I don’t have the money to buy a new one! Hopefully it’s good enough for most people for now!

Thanks so much for this I’ve been looking at these speakers and a dac set up I’m sold and also subscribed where did you get your blue cables from 🙌🏻
Thanks Paul and welcome to the channel! 🙌 The blue cables are ‘Chord Clearway RCA’.
When you make videos of speakers, please play them and do a sound test in the video.
Unfortunately the DAC32 Streamer isn’t available in the United States. Are there any alternatives?

A Raspberry PI with HiFi Berry might better a upgrade instead of the DAC32, especially with PlexAMP now available for the Raspberry PI.
Absolutely - PI streaming is excellent, that would be a good comparison to do! 👍
Would you recommend these as an upgrade to the steljes ns3
EDIFIER R1280T OR R1280DBS OR R1700BT OR R1850DB ?! Please help me choose 🙏
I'm more into music and bass + vocal clarity must be decent.
This would be my question too.
Easy answer, buy the most expensive, they should be the best.

What do we need the dac for?
do you think that they sound good for other applications other than painting and cleaning? 😅
Sanding….baby changing….
What would be the best EQ for these?
Need help choosing between this and R1700BTS due to the aptx HD. Help!

Hi Imran, I use a Sonos Playbase with two play ones as surrounds. It’s unobtrusive to the lounge so the wife approves! Really want to get my hands on the Klipsch Cinema 1200 when it comes out though, that looks like a beast!
I mocked Boseos until I noticed my car came with their speakers

Did you get an answer to this? as I am in the same position and looking to upgrade the shelves audio ns3. What did you go for in the end?
i dont understand digital inputs on the speakers should be better than this dac32 in this type of design.. or is the eq + crossover fully analog?
I’m almost certain it’s all digital at this price point. Have you checked the bass setting behind the speaker? I kept it at 0 and sound good, not much base or boom.
@@mahinnahian3668 Also, some users says that in high volumes that could happen.

In fact, mine don't distort even at 100 percent volume, you must have defective equipment.
Question: if I hook up my tv to these via optical, how is the sound transmitted to the speaker that doesn’t have the optical input?
There is a wire that runs between the two speakers 👍

anyone know where you can get POLYVECTION DAC 32 in USA?
