My goodness, what could I say. Maybe only the perfect sound of silence would be able to describe and honor this. We, the ones who had the grace of listening this voice and soul in full explendor, are the lucky ones. May God Bless and Keep this rare human being named Joan Baez, always and always.Today, fifty year after this angel's command, we need her and the ones like her more than ever. Love and Gratitude.
Joan and Dvorak were mainstays in shepherding me through adolescence and the Vietnam swamp. This video and song bring her resolution and intensity, her aura of integrity, clearly to view. It's been good to live through the decades of Joan Baez' evolution and to feel the light of her spirit. Nobody, including Dylan, sings Dylan better.
Yeah. Very nice version. I have always struggled with Joan - love everything she is about, and I can't deny the pure gift of her voice, but it is often hard to listen to - a little too much, maybe. Here, she brings that guy to tears, and she gave me goosebumps.
STUNNING VIDEO! From a musical era when singing and songs often carried great meaning...... This performance seems to me like a blazing righteous angel coming to earth to speak truth to her audience......... A - MA - ZING !
EXACTLY MY FEELING, AN ANGEL ON COMMAND. DEMANDING HUMANITY TO THE HUMAN BEINGS. JOAN BAEZ REMAINS A FORCE OF MUSIC AND COMMITMENT TO WHATEVER OF GOODNESS AND INTEGRITY WE MAY HAVE WITHIN. ORGANIZED LOVE IN ACTION FOR MORE THAN SIXTY YEARS. . GOD BLESS YOU, DEAREST.
... after all, he provided the music to Bob Dylan's lyrics! That's something many people don't know. The songwriter or co-author of their song always is the ultimate interpreter of their song. It came from the song writer's emotions and creative consciousnes. However, you have to give Joan her propers for choosing to perform this song a capella live while staying bang-on in pitch.
We carried you in our armsOn Independence Day,And now you'd throw us all asideAnd put us on our way.Oh what dear daughter 'neath the sunWould treat a father so,To wait upon him hand and footAnd always tell him, "No"?Tears of rage, tears of grief,Why must I always be the thief?Come to me now, you knowWe're so aloneAnd life is brief. We pointed out the way to goAnd scratched your name in sand,Though you just thought it was nothing moreThan a place for you to stand. Now, I want you to know that while we watched,You discover there was no one true. Most ev'rybody really thoughtIt was a childish thing to do.Tears of rage, tears of grief,Must I always be the thief?Come to me now, you knowWe're so lowAnd life is brief. It was all very painlessWhen you went out to receiveAll that false instructionWhich we never could believe. And now the heart is filled with goldAs if it was a purse. But, oh, what kind of love is thisWhich goes from bad to worse?Tears of rage, tears of grief,Must I always be the thief?Come to me now, you knowWe're so lowAnd life is brief.Submit Correcti
I loved the way Joan deliberately allows her voice to break when going through her voice's passageo from chest to head voice. In doing so, she distills the raw emotion of this song. It is the musical interpretation of how someone's voice breaks, when they are holding back tears.
Who would have thought Joanie would have been on "Playboy After Dark"? Great version - interesting to see the bimbos at the mansion trying to get down and appear that they really are trying to think about what the song is saying.

As I-ve already written on this site, Joan Baez is and will remain forever one of the witnesses of our times. Her voice for me doesn't sound as perfect as some people wrote here and that's why I prefer her voice than Collin's for instance. She hasn't been formated, and most of all on this clip, we can see how unconfortable the blond lady compelled to listen to her feels. She's got a strange smile mixted with admiration and condescendance. Yeah for sure she's the only one capable to do so!
A hugh hefner Tv show, Playboy After Dark. He let her preach her peace politics so she went on his show. She was almost never on primetime TV-toooo controversial. Joan has one of the most powerful and "softest" voices ever. She is the ONLY concert artist I've seen perform without a mike(more than once) in concert!
Basically spectac---Not too shabby---best version I've heard---the polite applause is a tad embarrassing but then the 60s weren't really happenin yet---everyone looks like they're neighbors of Ward and June Cleaver--except the black couple of course.
A little class/reality awareness........ That is such a heavy statement I doubt any of the Playboy Club understood the concept of " So alone, life is brief ". More approprate in 1968 to sing that song to young solders......
Joan Baez is a more technically skilled singer with better pitch control, power, and vibrato, but Richard Manuel still sang this number way better, because his phrasing, timing and melancholy touch gave it way more soul
Yes but as for timing, he had full instrumentation when he sang it. Joan is singing a cappella. And I might be wrong, but she appears to be singing this right on the spot, whereas Richard was in the company of his friends, so he was completely in his comfort zone
For the most part, I like a healthy vibratto, but I know what you mean. I personally think the only time it's too much is on a couple of her earliest 100% soprano recordings, when she was still trying to figure out what to do with her voice. It got better in the late 60s (as shown in this clip) through the 70s.

This is SO great! This is my favourite song from the "Any Day Now" album, along with Love is just a 4 letter word.Really powerful and touching.
this song hits me EVERY SINGLE TIME. AMAZING & POWERFUL are words that don't do this anywhere near justice

She sang all her feelings to the world.... simple and true.. I love you Joanie
Dieu bénisse Joan Baez..il lui a donné un don magnifique..sa merveilleuse voix..
I'm a dancer and I get to do a duet with another girl to this song. I'm super excited and I think they want her to cry during the performance
Wow I hope you did it! ' must be very beautiful!
Amazing Joan............
richard manuel can't be beat at this song. no one can match his emotion.

Joan Baez 's powerful voice, had no idea Bob Dylan and Richard Manuel wrote this song. what a song!
This is when she sounds her best. When she shows us her rich lower range AND her powerful upper range.
fantastic
lovely
Fantastique !
unreal!
There are notes in there that play with your head it's kool!!
Incredible! never seen before, thank you!

Love
She was REALLY in love with Zimmy......
is it joan baez that just made hugh hefner cry.... pretty sure that's a young hugh hefner... fantastic

I have to agree with you there, the does interpret music better than anyone. S
Ella es perfecta.
the people watching are so still...
If she's indoors, what produces the echo, the reverberation?
Andrew C. I wonder if she's doing that with her voice?
Basically spectac---Not too shabby---best version I've heard---the polite applause is a tad embarrassing but then the 60s weren't really happenin yet---everyone looks like they're neighbors of Ward and June Cleaver--except the black couple of course.
Really good :)
@cutis1000 That's great news. First I've heard of this, thanks for letting me know.
And Rolling Stone put her at 189 on the list of top 200 Greatest Singers. 🤦🏻♀
A little class/reality awareness........

wouldn't it have been great if Joan got together to duet with Richard?

Wow, that was powerful...What was this from? it looks like Joan is singing at someone's cocktail party.
51 and snort 52 other then that pretty good joanie

But SAINT JOAN is the goddess!
Playboy After Dark?
listen to richard manuel and this song will seem almost amateur in my opinion.
personally I prefer Jimi Hendrix's cover, although I've only heard it in edited form.
this is really intense..and yes. that is hugh hefner in the background..go figure??
Isn't that Tommy Smothers next to her?
@jaimelynn988 What don't they understand?
So?
Can Lady Ga Ga do this?
robby rensenbrink yes
What a lot a bottle !
he was cutting down joan baez and i agree with him.
@Resenbrink yes she can, lady gaga is an excellent singer. search "lady gaga acoustic live" and youll be blown away. love joan baez though
Egh, why sing this acapella? You have to rush the parts where there is meant to be a pause and you can't really feel any background.
I has a look at the link and though I still think Baez is bettr I must say that Gaga's performance was plesantly surprisng
Gaga is garbage.
not as good as Richard Manuel's original
