Scholes is massively famous with English football fans. But as someone who isn’t English, I can say with a decent degree of confidence that Steven Gerrard is more highly regarded outside of England.
Everyone makes fun of Arsenal's 03/04 Invincibles but do they know how good those 20 Premier League teams were at that time? Today you only need to worry about Man City and Liverpool and that's it. I really wanna see Jordan Henderson or Rodri go up against just Patrick Vieira in midfield 🤣
Not that good. Arsenal had 1 really good team to compete against and that was United. Now the money in the Premier League is crazy. Man City and Man United spending ridiculous money, Chelsea have been a powerhouse since mid 00s, Liverpool have improved massively and Tottenham are better than they were in the early 00s so there is more competition now than there was then. Not taking away from the achievement but there is more competition now.

Honest take as a Liverpool fan. I used to like it when Scholes was playing because I felt we could get at him. Scholes was great at passing but like Pogba in the sense you needed legs around him. Think Scholes was more set for Spanish football. I preferred Scholes to play over Fletcher/Anderson at the time, obviously they aren't in the same league The better argument to compare is Alonso or Scholes. Like Mach said. Scholes wasn't really good at dribbling, heading, tackling or particularly fast. An Ferguson dropped him in big games and tried to get Veron in over him at one time,Gerrard on the other hand you have to be extremely biased to say Gerrard wasn't the complete player. Could do everything and he traded his love for Liverpool over playing for the likes of Real.
I don't think one was better than the other. I think they suited the teams they were in but would both have failed if they swapped places. Gerrard didn't have the ability to be the engine of uniteds success, Scholes couldn't be the solo star that saved Liverpool regularly

It's worth noting that despite Liverpool getting 97 & 99 pts, in those 2 seasons combined they lost 15 games in all competitions including SEVEN in the champions league. Lucky to have won a champions league with that record. Obviously ManUtd in the treble season only lost 3 PL games, zero defeats in both the FAcup & CL (with the hardest route any winner has ever had in FAcup & you can't get much harder CL route either, whilst also being top scorers by far in PL & CL). Followed by retaining the PL title with 91pts winning by 18pts, again top scorers by far in PL (97 goals). Followed by retaining the PL again in 2000/01 won that year at a canter as well. Could literally afford to only get 4 pts out of a possible 15 in the last 5 games and still win by double figures. Also the format of the CL that ManUtd won in 1998/99 was the hardest due to more actual "champions" and also only the group winners progress to the knockout stage and just 2 runners up from 6 group's. And then the format that ran from 1999/00 until 2002/03 had the most games because it had 2 group stages and yet in 99/00 ManUtd only reached QF (lost to eventual winners Real Madrid) but only lost 3 CL games out of 14. But you still accept that 3 CL defeats you weren't quite good enough. Liverpool lose 4 in 13 and win the trophy so I don't wanna hear them talk about being unlucky to lose title with 97pts plus Liverpool also wouldn't have made it through their group had the fixture scheduling been slightly different and their last game wasn't home vs the team they're competing with for 2nd which was a massive advantage both times in fact that they won this latest format of the CL was mainly due to having to beat a team last group game who they're competing with to scrape 2nd place at Anfield with the crowd etc...dragging them over the line. If they're away last they are eliminated both 2004/05 & 2018/19.
I’m an Arsenal fan, but United’s 99 treble winning season is not only impressive because of the trophies but also the time they did it in. They did it in a time when squads were smaller making it even harder to fight battles on all fronts. I’d go as far to say even if another team wins the treble now, it won’t be as impressive as that United treble.
Ya but u do know other teams had smaller squads aswell so at that time it wasn’t a “small squad” but looking back it now it is since squads r bigger now
Utd always had bogey refs..seiously Howard Webb was worth at least nine points conservatively for Utd every season, totally made a joke of the league back then.
As a French Liverpool Fan, MU doesn’t manage well Paul Pogba. He is so gifted, just watch how he plays for France and you will understand that MU never used him properly. He is a true leader.
Being a good leader has nothing to do with complementarity : - Kante / Pogba / Griezmann - Xavi / Iniesta / Busquets - Xabi Alonso / Gérard / Masherano
Paul has clear coaching instructions, good environment, love, confidence, and complementarity in his national team. He has been the most regular, and one of the vocal leader. This midfielder has everything. MU is a joke club since Ferguson depart.
Being an outsider… I would say that Fergie’s United is what solidified the club in the world as being the face of the premiership with Liverpool and Arsenal as close 2nd and Chelsea/City as 3/4 Being that Gerrard was the face of a successful Liverpool era… and a “better” 2 way player… he’ll probably have the tables tipped his way. Scholes however maybe as good of a playmaker as any… If Zidane is the benchmark of a total midfielder, it’s hard not to look at Gerrard as a close 2nd.. but Jesus were there so many who were exceptional in their prime.. kaka, ballack, rivaldo, iniesta, lamps, and my favourite of all Effenberg
Big up Paul for mentioning that Marcus Rashford is an amazing human being ❤️🔥 I also agree he would fit Liverpool like a glove (if he didn’t have a career for man United) the guy is my age (23) and he’s done more for people in the uk than most government officials. Feel like they could've emphasized more on the different roles that Gerrard and Scholes had in their teams. Scholes was never a box-to-box type, unlike Gerrard. Gerrard naturally had better physical stats which became an advantage for him and his role which was to basically be everywhere and everything for Liverpool. Scholes on the other hand was a no. 10 in his early days and a no. 8/6 with keane/carrick/others, which shows that he has very good IQ and talent considering his lack of physical prowess. Both can hit the ball beautifully, but Scholes edges out Gerrard in terms of distribution and vision. Stats I think can sometimes be 'misleading' when talking about midfielders, so debates about who is better can be very interesting
I think what Scholes offered to United was so different to what Gerrard was to Liverpool that it’s hard to compare the two. Gerrard was the most well rounded midfielder the prem has seen, but Scholes offered a level of control to a game that Gerrard couldn’t. Inseparable and pretty hard to compare the two tbh
Think scholes could link the game in all areas of the pitch, was world class in any spot in the midfield. Think Gerrard was a better player behind the striker than he was in midfield
Nah Henry takes best prem league player ever, imo you need to win ATLEAST one premier league if you want to be considered. However i agree, gerrard pisses over scholes.
Didn't think Scholes was any good? Didn't watch football in the 90's then, I used to get up to watch him alone, dictate games. When discussing Paul's attributes it's impossible to articulate the affect he had on games, when you hear legends of the game talk about how they couldn't get near him speaks volumes, especially over some random Liverpool fan
Xavi zidane and Ronaldinho have all said gerrard is the greatest English midfielder they’ve seen. And zidane wanted him to come into Madrid when he was going to leave since they was going to lose 2 playmakers in zidane and beckham.
Thing with Scholes is, he was probably the only English player who had the technical ability to get into that that great Barca side managed by Pep. And that is the peak for any midfielder imo

As a Liverpool fan since 1978, I like the way this guy makes our arguments. Walk on...and Zidane did say Gerrard by the way...
Ya but u do know other teams had smaller squads aswell so at that time it wasn’t a “small squad” but looking back it now it is since squads r bigger now
It was one of the hardest routes to a final as well. That season United played Bayern 3 times, Barcelona 2 times, Inter 2 times and juventus 2 times
Wasn't as small as when there was no subs or only 1 sub in the 80s.
So getting a treble in the 80s was more impressive?

Being an outsider… I would say that Fergie’s United is what solidified the club in the world as being the face of the premiership with Liverpool and Arsenal as close 2nd and Chelsea/City as 3/4
Being that Gerrard was the face of a successful Liverpool era… and a “better” 2 way player… he’ll probably have the tables tipped his way. Scholes however maybe as good of a playmaker as any…
