This Las Choyas (coconut) geode from Mexico sat in storage for 12 or 13 years after I stored it and forgot about it. Cracking open the geode was a lot of fun and hopefully you've enjoyed it as well. This particular type of geode began as a vesicle, that is, a bubble that formed in lava as it was cooling that never quite made it to the surface. This left the perfect cavity for crystals to line over time. Not all geodes are volcanic in origin, but that is the most likely way to get amethyst or smoky quartz!

All that sparkly goodness and Legend of Zelda too! The little “hairs” might be goethite. Please check this one to see if it is fluorescent, some of those with the white rind really light up under a uv light. Spectacular geode!

I'll be sure to do that! And that's the probably suspect, but I have to take a closer look later :)

I'm glad you enjoyed them! And I agree! I kept back some velvet obsidian to throw into some future aquascapes 😊.

I would totally keep that geode. It deserves a special place of honor in your home or office, especially with how long you kept it without cracking it. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.

The price of geods are according to where they are from. In Kentucky a farmer would probably pay you to get them out of their fields lol. Geods tend to break plows and disc! They are really hard!

Pardon my ignorance, I just enjoy watching these kinds of videos, but how does someone know if it's a geode? I would walk right past this if I saw it on the ground.
Anyway, awesome video and gorgeous geode!

It's all about "location location location" geodes don't form everywhere. But if you know you are in an area where they form, then any round or bubbly rocks may be geodes. Also if it has a large hollow space it will likely feel lighter than it is. Otherwise the only way to know is the open it on up!

Beautiful geode. The camera was moving too much to get many focused images - didn't see the needle-ing because of that
