  • DEALER FFES on retail price cars are junk! Retail car prices already significantly HIGHER than PRIVATE PARTY PRICES! WHY? Because they do paperwork for you, register your vehicle, detail and clean it. So, WHY should you also pay them a DOCUMENT FEE or a PREP FEE when you're already paying for it? It's totally ridiculous!

    A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
    1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
    2. CONVINCE Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
    3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
    4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
    1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
    2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
    3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
    4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get through the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency. Join our mission!

This video arms you with information that explains WHY you shouldn't pay Dealer Fees. The information that explains the difference between dealer retail and a private party seller is readily available on a google search: 1) Handle all the paperwork associated with ownership, title transfer and registration. (So why would you pay a doc fee, which clearly is a fee for a service already covered in a dealer retail price?). 2) Cars have been thoroughly inspected and if necessary, repaired. (So why would you ever pay a dealer prep fee when it is clearly already covered in the added cost of a dealer retail price? If they spent more money fixing it, that should be reflected in the price). 3) They have to provide you with a car history check (btw, there are tons of dealers who skip this entirely, even though it's one of their responsibilities of being a licensed dealer. The history of the vehicle they are selling is supposed to be entirely transparent.)

Kevin and Elizabeth, I am looking to buy a new vehicle now. I tried your method of having them email me a OTD price. They included the dealer ad-ones in that price and would not budge on removing one of them. I went in to see if I could get them removed in person. No dice, the sales manager told me that the car I was looking at wasn’t the car for me. I told him no, that’s the right car, this is just the wrong dealership. My wife and I walked out. Time to move on to the next dealer.

I agree with Charles. Out-the-door price is key. If you negotiate $30,000 out-the-door and they want to charge $1 for the car and a $29,999 "Dealer thumb-twiddling fee", that is perfectly fine.

Just looked at a used Fiat - $9500. By the time the dealer came back with the total the price was $10,950 - 😅f we financed. $10,400 if we paid cash. They included roughly $500 in processing/document fees. That was over the $8000 average on a car of that year and mileage. When I questioned the proc/doc fees the dealer said “the state requires we charge them.” When I read the state’s DMV law stating that the fees were not mandatory and are negotionable he said they don’t negotiate those fees. We walked.

Great Education Video, I followed your steps via email, I knew about the fake fees but not all of them. I sent the email and called them out on the 5000.00 Dollars in added fees and before I did this they changed the price of the car 3 times. When I sent them the next email saying I wound not pay for a 3000 dollar paint protection and a 300 dollar nitrogen fee and a 300 tire and battery fee and a 2000 dollar Doc fee and a few more fees. All the sudden they decided to email me saying they would get back to me on this. Never heard back from them, I am so glad I did this before wasting over an hour drive and basically get robbed like I did with my last car dealership that some how over charged me 20000 thousand, how they did this without me noticing I don't know until now after watching these videos. I wish I could show the emails to the FDC I saved them all. Damn Crooks. How does this be allowed to happen without them paying fines or something ? Sucks I did not get a vehicle today but I learned a bit from you. Thank You for your posts.

When I was young and dumb about 30 years ago, I bought a used pick up truck from a stealership. I quickly realized I couldn’t afford the payment and after pleading with the stealership they actually agreed to take back the truck about a month later but for $1,000 less that I bought it for. I said fine, whatever and took it back. That day after giving them back the keys, they told me that on top of the $1,000 loss I was taking, they needed an extra $50 for some sort of “paperwork filing fee” with the State. I told them I would come back the next day with the extra $50 but I never did and I never heard from them again. Stealerships.

You should add that motorcycle dealers (Harley as an example) have lots of added fees as well. I am looking for a new bike and here are some of the added fees over MSRP. Doc fee $589.00, electronic filing fee 199.75, prep was 273.00, tire fee 2.00 dollars, tag agency fee 85.00, doc stamps, 117.25. Battery fee 1.50. And that was just one dealer. Also the bike was 2k over MSRP to begin with with then makes me pay more in taxes which makes the payment higher!!!!!

I am so exhausted trying to buy a pre-owned car right now. I was told by one dealership that the fees they added in were mandatory and that they had no obligation to sell me the car if I insisted on them being removed. I walked out and they continue to call me. Needles to say I am looking elsewhere. I contacted another dealership that had in small print, a disclaimer that said that the prices listed were less a mandatory $4995 down payment. This was also ONLY if I used their finance options which start at a 4:32 interest rate. I have a pre-approval from my credit union which is at 3.49, so that option does not benefit me. When I mentioned this, the salesman told me that most people do not bother to read the fine print and that they cannot change their business practices to suit one person. I am losing hope. Does ANYONE know an honest upfront dealership in New York?

I know I am late to your comment. However, I would start looking at car concierge services if you dont mind dropping a couple hundred. Obviously, you'll have to make sure it is legit and they don't have a brokers license. Other than that. They seem to be a good option for people who don't want to get robbed blind and don't really understand the negotiation process with dealers.
If they are a good and legit business. They will usually do all the negotiating for you with your set parameters of what you want. Then they'll contact you when they have found what you wanted.
Your only real obligation is going in to pick up your car once said negotiating is done on your behalf by your car concierge man/woman.
Coukd be an option for you, especially in todays market. Would you rather loss $800 and hire a professional former dealer to help get you the best deal. Or try and google your own research, try and out haggle a dealer that does it for a living and possibly lose THOUSANDS of $$$ and time driving dealer to dealer

More insidious than dealer fees are when dealers install mandatory “features” on used cars such as security systems and interior/exterior coatings in order to pad the price. The worst part: it’s not the domestic dealers pulling this stunt in my town, but two of the premium Euro luxury dealers.

When I bought a premium certified used CR-V in mid 2021. when there was a shortage of new and used vehicles, I looked at the sticker price and the $400 Doc fee. I knew the sticker price was fair in that market and I offered them that but not a dime more, other than government fees like sales taxes and insurance. I then told the sales person it was time to see the F&I person. That startled them a but as that in an insider term for the person that sells you on all the extra crap and where the dealership doubles their profit (or more).
So when I sat down I said they must be the F&I person and their whole attitude changed to something like "Old buddy, lets not waste time. We're not going to screw you". They just asked "Down Payment". I answered $2000 deposit then and there and the balance on delivery. Sorry, no financing spiff for you.
I pointed out I would not pay the doc fee. He asked about an Extended warranty. I replied as a Certified used Honda the factory drivetrain warranty was still in effect until the fall of 2023. The sales person had told me that when making their pitch.
They then guessed I did not want the diamond coat and seat protector. Bingo. They wrote is up for the exact amount, printed it out cleanly with no games and I did an e-transfer for the deposit with my phone. Picked up a draft for the rest that afternoon and they picked me up at home the next morning to get it the vehicle as this dealer was 30 miles from home. No fuss. Smooth as a car transaction gets.
I knew these insider terms from a friend that had worked selling used cars at a Ford dealership 40 years ago.

Jean Simmons of Kiss fame showed how he dealt with things in contracts; and this should apply to a buyers order at a dealership. Something he learned apparently from a lawyer is he carries a red ink pen and he’ll read the contract and mark through the numbers and terms he doesn’t agree with and initial those red mark offs. According to him that automatically makes what is in red null and void.

After new tires and possibly ball joints, control arms, and u-joints I'm in it for about 1500 to 2000. I definitely can't afford cheap cars if I can't do the work myself. I'm driving a 2000 f150 that I picked up for $350. The starter had a dead spot even though it tested good, and the battery cables were junk. Total spent so far is right at $425 because it had good tires and a good battery.
